About The Heritage Restaurant

The Heritage is one of the many classroom/laboratory facilities operated by the Secchia Institute for Culinary Education at Grand Rapids Community College. The restaurant is staffed by students in the culinary programs and is under the direct supervision of Chef and Dining Room Professors.

During lunch, your meal will be prepared and served by first year students. The meals represent International Cuisine with modern and classical touches. In the evening, The Heritage reopens to feature a relaxed atmosphere, more Continental Cuisine, and our second year students will serve and prepare your meal.

The Secchia Institute for Culinary Education restaurants and kitchens are classroom settings. We take pride in them. Our students prepare our meals daily with the finest seasonally available ingredients including freshly baked artisan bread.

This GRCC Run and student-cooked & served restaurant is a nice dining experience. The dinner menu is now a 3 course fixed price option. Lots of nice starters: a deconstructed roasted beet salad, a carbonara prepared table side, the long-standing mock eel which is fried shiitake mushrooms in a sticky sauce; entrees included a wonderful tasty pork dish, duck with apples in the accompanying side that everyone loved, chicken in a broth with noodles, 3 scallops with crispy crackers on a little bit of sauce. For dessert, we enjoyed the very sweet apples Normandy prepared table side and served with ice cream, the chocolate cake served with little bits of candies citrus which were the perfect accompaniment, and the poached pear.
Service was attentive and sincere.

Excellent, creatively prepared entree. Squeaked in with the last available of a popular lunch special. Attentive wait staff. Beautiful view overlooking the city. Prices are slightly higher than an average lunch, but these are no average lunches! Would highly recommend.

Have eaten here many times. Food has always been very good. It's the community college cooking school and there is a lot of attention to detail must check the dates when open since they follow the school calendar

Our dining experience was exceptional. Our student waiter did a great job in explaining the menu and specials to us and was very attentive throughout the entire meal. The evening instructor, Holly, also introduced herself and asked us how our meal and experience was. The presentation and flavors of the food was excellent. I especially liked the pressed coffee with the chocolate cake at the end of our meal and the beers we tried made by GRCC students at the beginning of our meal. :)

We had had a wonderful birthday celebration for our dear friend who is soon to be 95 years old. Our sever, Jaison, did a great job answering our questions regarding the menu selections. The Apples Normandy prepared at our table was outstanding. I plan to try the Heritage for lunch.

Incredible food and amazing waitstaff. Everything that came out of the kitchen was nothing short of perfect and the wait staff was so attentive I felt like we were the only guests in the restaurant. We will definitely be going back for more date nights - you can’t beat a 5 course meal for $34 per person!

The wait staff was very knowledgeable and attentive. They were quick to service every need from drinks, to bread, to clearing items post-meal. The big surprise was the appetizer, which was an interesting blend of vegetables and a fruit accompaniment. The presentation of the appetizer was aesthetically perfect! The entree was prepared to perfection and, in fact, I ate everything on my plate. The dessert was a unique blend of sweet and delectable, however, the grapefruit, a little bit tart/sour, really made the whole meal memorable. I highly recommend that you take the time to visit this restaurant. I am certain that you will enjoy this culinary experience. I will return to the Heritage Restaurant very soon.

The experience I had at The Heritage was very professional! The seating, order taking, and service is over all was good. Though I could have done without the critiquing the working student where receiving from a supervisor. I understand it is there job to better the students performance though I’d prefer it not be next to my ear.

Our daughter is a graduate of Secchia Center for Culinary Arts and we've been there several times over the past several years. Now I'm on the Birthday list and so came to use my certificate. The Heritage never disappoints. Nice atmosphere, great service, everyone is friendly, and the food is always fantastic! The students and faculty truly do a wonderful job.

Outstanding, imaginative menu at excellent price, although one meat entrée was not hot and the steak was a bit overcooked. Service was very friendly but student was still learning and a bit rough around the edges. Surprisingly, we weren't offered coffee with dessert. But it is a teaching restaurant, and we'll worth the experience; and the price can't be beat!

Food was great. I have food allergies and the chef came to our table and was great at altering a menu item so that I could enjoy it. Service was great just slow, there were a couple of larger parties that slowed our service up.

This isn't your typical restaurant, but a fine dining experience provided by students in a culinary arts program. The waitstaff was very friendly, helpful and informative as well as appealingly earnest if somewhat nervous (after all, they are being graded!). The menu selections were diverse, unique and appealing. I ordered beef tenderloin medium rare, and they delivered. My friend ordered the Drum Fish, which she said was only OK. My complaint is that my food was barely above room temperature. I wouldn't expect the center of a medium-rare piece of meat to be piping hot, but to have tepid pureed parsnips and sweet potatoes was a disappointment.

I went there for lunch. My lunch consisted of a "chopped salad", which wasn't a chopped salad, but a salad comprised of large pieces and the aforementioned beef tenderloin with pureed parsnips and a pureed sweet potato that didn't taste like sweet potato. There was Piri-piri sauce as a condiment. I was warned by the thoughtful waiter that the Piri-piri was hot, and it really was. Our water glasses were refilled throughout the meal.

A dessert cart was brought table-side and a lovely if nervous young student went through full descriptions of every item. They looked appealing, but since I avoid gluten and don't love sweets, I declined. In a "regular restaurant", I would have waived away the cart and the waiter before letting them launch into a description, but as this is a learning environment, I let him go through the presentation. Good job.

Free parking was available directly beneath the building, which was a plus.

An 18% gratuity was automatically added to the bill. We were informed that all tips go towards scholarships. Nice touch. My lunch came to $25. That was just for me, as we asked for separate checks.

It was a nice experience, but probably not one I would care to repeat.

The Heritage always provides a nice meal for the price with unique and tasty offerings. The only downside on this visit was that the menu provided had many fewer choices than the one posted on-line and as we were getting ready to leave we saw another table enjoying a dessert that had not been offered to us (and was not on the menu). Not sure what the deal was with that......

Also, the dining room is lovely, one of the prettiest in town, with lots of windows, light, & pleasant views. Will def return & recommend!

We were disappointed as this dinner was for our wedding anniversary and I wanted to enjoy the free entree for another bought as offered by email 2 weeks earlier. We reserved a table for 7pm. The restaurant was a half empty. We ordered a beer which was delicious, and the sample to try it was big. That was a great surprise! Then we ordered our appetizer and entree -we really wanted to be surprised by the lamb which sounded marvelous- but we had to wait for a half hour before the manager announced one of our 2 entrees was not available anymore! So we had to pick another one...then she came back to explain that the other entree was unavailable either!!! A little disappointed, and really hungry as we did not receive any bread or any little "mise en bouche" to help us a bit with the wait, we chose something else which was not particularly delicious (pork). Regarding the desserts, just 2 were left so we chose one not with enthusiasm. The dessert from Normandie (apples grilled on a plancha and flambé with rhum) was not exceptional because the fruits needed more cooking, and the Chinese spice was composed with too much cinnamon. Too bad. However the service was kind and the manager offered us one menu on the 2 ordered (a $37 value) but we were supposed to already enjoy a special discount because of our wedding anniversary. So we just paid (20% automatically applied for the service, even on the menu offered) and left after 2H30 in the restaurant. I think we won't come back unfortunately. Not a great experience at all.
