The Herb Box - Old Town Ratings and Reviews
Heard brunch was really good and was excited to try it. I had the kale, brie and granny smith omelette. The omelette was over cooked and the apple slices were slivered so thin it did not add any flavor. Good portion size, cheap bread for toast. Props to the server; she was excellent.
So booked this through OpenTable a month in advance since I was visiting the area and wanted to take the family out for a nice thanksgiving dinner. Had a reservation for 7pm. Turned up and the place was closed. No email ahead of time to point out that they made a mistake with allowing the booking to go through. Honestly this is unforgivable.
Had breakfast with 2 friends. It was just awful! I ordered French Toast that came pretty black and hard. I couldn't believe it was let out of the kitchen! One friend ordered scrambled eggs. There was no salt or pepper on table and it took about 5 minutes for waiter to bring and eggs were cold by the time it came. Other friend ordered pancakes which she said were good.
Service was so slow. Took forever to get coffee and then informed us they were out of cream. What restaurant lets itself run out of cream? (There is a grocery store with a few blocks of the restaurant)
Will never go back. Only saving grace was they just charged us for the coffee. But we left hungry.
Waited 20 min and nobody came to our table so we flagged down a waiter he said he’d get someone . That someone never came so we flagged the other waiter down again. He took our order, then 10 min later came back because he forgot to ask us how we wanted our eggs. Then we got our order after 45 min and our order was wrong.
Only my second time there. First time the service was attentive and our waiter was very friendly and made it a nice evening for our group of six. There was only my wife and myself on Sunday evening and the restaurant was not all that busy which would make one assume that the service was going to be attentive. Unfortunately we were not given any service until after about fifteen minutes of being seated and then the food was not nearly as good as the last visit. We will try again as it is a very nice setting and overall I think they are better than what they showed this last visit.
Customer Service was horrible. They sat us down, 15 minutes went past and never did one server come over to greet us or ask us for drinks. Maybe it was because we were in our mid to late 20’s, the servers didn’t see us as a good tip or we didn’t fit the image of others. Please look into how your servers are spending their time. My girlfriend said to me multiple times, the servers keep looking over here but no one wants to approach us? So we left and went elsewhere.
The gal who took our reservation was so sweet, I was anticipating a great time for our family of five for Dad's birthday. The table was great; the place is beautiful. The brunch menu is impressive and most of the food was great. Unfortunately the service ruined the event. Even after a chat with the manager, things did not improve. She knew the new server was having a hard time and did not come back to see how things were going until after we were almost done eating . I have a lot of grace for restaurants as I was a server in college, but waiting an hour and twenty minutes for food with nothing complimentary to snack on was ridiculous. I felt like I was in a different country and told my family to pretend so we could keep good attitudes. After I was finally asked about my food (three out of five of us said it tasted fabulous!) and mentioned the eggs were very dry and overcooked, I was not offered anything else. That dish was removed from the bill and we were given a free dessert (that we didn't care for). Nothing else was done to compensate. If I were managing this restaurant, I would look into the training that obviously needs tweaking and I would have offered customers in our situation a hefty apologetic gift card or picked up the tab. We left feeling like they could care less if we ever returned. And maybe they are doing fine and don't need our business. We love fresh, well presented, creative food and were looking forward to the experience, but there are a lot of other restaurants to try. Not worth the drive from Queen Creek.
We arrived around 5:30 on a Thursday.
Even though the restaurant was practically empty, "hostess"attempted to seat the two of us next to a party of four. Never understand why novice "hostesses" try clumping customers into a corner. Fortunately, we moved a table over.
Andy was our server. He more than made up for any difficulty. Andy is extremely pleasent to deal with. He made fabulous suggestions. His service was spot on. Delivering delicious food. Loved the Korean cauliflower, and the Thai ribs.
His suggestion for desert was spot on.
We cannot say enough good things about Andy. He made for a wonderful evening.
I dine out two, sometimes three times a month (socially and for business), and Downtown Scottsdale has wonderful places for lunch and dinner. The Herb Box IS NOT one of them! I placed an order for a turkey wrap, without the bacon or tomato - and asked for the greens on the side with no dressing, oil/vinegar (also on the side) - and no chips. The meal was served with the wrap filled with more greens than turkey, a one or two small chunks of blue cheese, all of which was drowning in an oily mass of greens (literally dripping with over-seasoned oil and vinegar), and piles (I do mean piles) of chips that totally overwhelmed the plate. Was there anything good about The Herb Box? Yes, the chairs were comfortable and the decaf coffee was good.
The food was good but service was not particularly good. Our entrees were served while we were eating our appetizers which is just silly. A server should be able to appropriately course a meal. We were given a check without being offered dessert menus. Finally, the servers do not box up food but rather, bring boxes out. This isn't applebees guys. Step up your game.
I regretted choosing this restaurant for a special occasion.
