The Helmand offers a fantastic meal. Several new to the Helmand were with us, Afghan food sort of frightened them- would they understand what they were ordering? They were all impressed and very happy! Meats and vegetarian, more than just a kabob, wonderful flavors blended just right. A truly find meal! But get a reservation- they are busy.
Lovely! A very special place. We enjoyed the delicately flavored food and appreciated our very considerate, kind, and interesting server.
Always a treat. Food is delish. The food came out exceptionally fast, less than 5 min from ordering. Made me think they were in a hurry to move us along.
We had an excellent dinner with friends. The only drawback was a VERY noisy table next to us.
Never disappoints. Great flavors, very filling, old-school dining feel (tablecloths, no rush but certainly never a delay, attentive and respectful staff). Adult dining rather than hipster scene. The food is refreshingly authentic, different and delicious
The Helmand NEVER fails to disappoint. Everyone we have introduced to this restaurant has been wowed and ready to return. The service is great and SPEEDY. Since we usually eat there before a concert or theatre event, this is especially important.
This Place is amazing! It is the second time ive been and i loved it!
The food was still great, but I was surprised to find how much the cost had increased - and especially to see the high price for the bread, which used to be complementary. Adding small pieces of bread now increase the price of an entree by $5.50, which is unheard of. I won't be back, and this used to be one of my favorite restaurants, affordable and fabulous. I think the word may be getting around, because we were there for a reservation for 2 at the prime-time dinner hour, having driven all the way from Washington for the experience, and there were only 4 tables of guests. I've never seen the place so empty. I'd recommend going somewhere else; I certainly will.
Very good meal.
This was our second time dining here. The food is amazing, worth the trip from DC. The service is great. Our waiter accidentally spilled water on my lap and went above and beyond to make sure we still had a lovely dining experience (including an offer to handle any dry cleaning). Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a special spot!
20 Years of marvelous food and very good service with a smile.
Our meal at The Helmand was great until the very end. We had theatre tickets for an 8PM show so we made our reservation for 6:15PM to get to the theatre on time. We were a party of 5. Ordered 2 appetizers, 5 main courses, and 3 desserts. We chose The Helmand because of its closeness to the theatre and vegetarian options. Our waitress was great, very attentive and knowledgeable. She made several good recommendations to us. This is where we get to the bad part at the end. After our desserts were delivered we never saw our waitress again. We finished our meal at 7:15 and were eager to get to the theatre 30 minutes before the show to get our tickets from will-call. We waited and waited and for someone to bring us a check or for even a glimpse of our waitress to flag her down. Finally a different server came over to see if we needed help. Apparently our waitress had left for the evening and the handover of our table never happened. In the end we left the restaurant around 7:40, that is 25 minutes from end of meal until the check was paid, and ran to the theatre. I understand Friday can be busy but if there is some sort of shift change happening the staff needs to be on top of it. What would have been the perfect first-time experience at the restaurant was ruined by a stressful ending.
Outstanding authentic Afghan cuisine. Well worth the trip to downtown Baltimore. Be sure to make a reservation, as it is a popular restaurant, especially on the weekends. In the past 20+ years I've been coming here, I've never been disappointed. Enjoy!
Lots of vegetarian options. Food was delicious
Great Afghani food! Plenty of vegetarian and meat options. Delicious!
Never disappointed. The best place in town for lamb dishes. Period. Go early or late to miss the crowd - at peak times it can get very noisy.
A long time tradition in Baltimore. Beloved and visited by old/young, every ethnic group. Very cozy and comfortable with wonderful Afghan decor and gracious service. Menu rarely (ever?) changes so you know what to expect. The food reflects Afghan cuisine so it is meat-centric; there are vegetarian options but they tend to be under spiced and less interesting than the meat dishes, with the exception of the pumpkin appetizer and the Aush soup. Wines are interesting and there are some good ones by the glass, all of which are under $10. Went on a very blustery, miserable Friday night and the place was still packed with everyone from large parties of friends to couples, local college kids to empty-nesters. Only down sides are the noise level which made it hard to have conversations and the oppressive heating which was overboard even given the cold wind blowing outside.
This was a great place with amazing food. Seemed to be newly decorated from the least time I was there and I love the new look.
Helmand remains the best value to quality food in Baltimore The space is warm and attractive. Most nights it is filled with an interesting, diverse crowd. The service is consistently excellent. And, most importantly, the food is fresh and flavorful. We get one (or more) of all six appetizers as a start, then split mains. My favorite main is Sabzy Challow, a savory mix of spinach with beef or lamb cubes, topped with Celantro dressing.
Our waiter wasn't overly attentive. We waited to place our order and then again for the dessert menu, but the ambience is relaxed and the food was delicious as always!!
Always busy & great.
First tine there. Excellent food and very friendly waitress.
Definitely will be back when in the area. Everything on the menu sounds delicious
This cozy restaurant is a real find--clearly one of the 50 best in Baltimore-- but comfortable and not too pricey.
We enjoyed celebrating a family birthday Saturday night. The ambiance was great. Initially we felt really rushed by our waitress while ordering but when I requested that she slow down a bit she was very respectful of our request. Great evening and very enjoyable. Good food.
Was really great all around.
Food was really tasty and it was very easy to order gluten free and vegetarian. I’d love to see them do an update of the space.
This was my first time here and I enjoyed it. My cousin and I got a basket of naan and four appetizers to share. This was a great way of tasting different menu items. The food was delicious and very reasonably priced. The service was outstanding!
Excellent -- Service, food, price; love it, and is a MANDATORY stop every time I'm in Baltimore.
Thank You !
The food is great and for a great price. This place is pretty popular with the locals and non-locals alike. While it is a white table cloth type of place, when it is crowded (and it is always crowded, reservations are a must) It can get pretty loud. My table of 4 definitely had to speak up to be heard.
Every time we eat at the Helmand has been as awesome experience. The food is exceptional as is the service.
Dinner as always was absolutely fantastic! I would highly recommend this restaurant as it never disappoints and is always delicious
If you are in Baltimore, you’ve got to try this place. I would love to take it to Seattle!!!!
Wonderful food and interesting combinations. Nice ambiance. Good service too.
Excellent, they need more room, and turn the heat down, loud but doable. Highly recommend, in spite of these factors. Authenticity and fast service.
I want to rave but I can’t. Food was good but we rushed from the time we arrived. We had a reservation for 5:45 and they sat us right away. Waitress asked for drink orders and took my husbands appetizer order and walked away without taking mine. His appetizer arrived within 2 minutes. She took my order and I got mine immediately. Waitress kept coming asking what we wanted for dinner . Never told us list of specials was in menu. When we ordered our dinner was served almost immediately. No time to breath. I felt rushed. We ordered tea at the end of the meal and I could see the maitre d looking at our table and our neighbors as if to get us moving. I use to live the Helmand but this was not a good experience. Too bad because the food was good
Our group all enjoy Afghan food and were pleased with our meals. Service was very quick, indicating that we had all ordered pre-prepared dishes. Food doesn't appear to be cooked to order. That said, everything was tasty. I had chicken, which was all white meat and a bit overcooked but covered with a delicious sauce. Servings are large. Good wine list with more variety than I expected. One of our group is a professional foodie and was very pleased with everything.
The Helmand consistently delivers delicious food. It is a bit of a drive, but we visit a few times a year because of the fantastic food. The kids love Kaddo Borwani, Vegetarian Mantwo, and Naan. I almost always order Kabuli. The waitstaff is friendly, welcoming, and efficient. Highly recommend.
As always, wonderful
ORDER LAMB. AVOID THE FISH. Great place for lamb - 3 of 4 of us ordered it. However, 1 in our party ordered fish - BIG MISTAKE! Tasted horrific. Sadly we didn't mention it till the end of the meal. Waitress offered an additional meal, but we were ready to leave. A professional restaurant response would have been to comp the meal. Didn't happen. A reasonably good wine selection, at a fair price. Restaurant was packed for Valentines Day. Surprised by the good acoustics; had no problem conversing at our table.
Baltimore's Best Ethnic Restaurant - Superb, As Usual!!!
