The Helmand Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
The Helmand's food is always consistent. Always cooked to perfection and flavorful. I had the Chopendez and a side of mushrooms. The steak was perfect and the sides so delicious. My friend had a chicken entrée with a fruit topping that he said was delicious. I am never disappointed in my meal here and it my wife's favorite restaurant in Baltimore. Even when I have been in the middle east, I compare the food to Helmand's. The ice cream with figs is rich and creamy but I love the ice cream with rose water the best. A real treat.
We love the Helmand. It can be very lively at times but diners all seem to be having a good time and enjoying. The service is fast and friendly. The servings are reasonable and delicious. They have maintained a consistently high level of food preparation. Many vegetarian options too!
We have eaten here several times and the food is consistently excellent as is the service and the ambiance. Reservations are needed. We love the pumpkin with yogurt appetizer. The Afghani decorations add to the exotic atmosphere without being overbearing. The beautiful rugs on the walls and floor soften the noise level in the restaurant.
I come to the Helmand frequently, mostly with colleagues when we take guests at work out to dinner. This time I came with a friend and most everything was up to the usual standard. The only thing that slightly disappointed this time was the aushak, which felt a little TOO al dente and its filling was not warm. Other than that, the service is friendly and the rest of the dishes were delicious. Thank you again!
It took the staff a very long time to seat us. There was no host at the door, so after waiting for a long time and catching the eyes of many restaurant employees, we finally had to stand in the middle of the restaurant and approach someone. After being seated, it took another exceptionally long time for a server to approach us, even though they visited neighboring tables multiple times as we were waiting. When the server did come to us, she was very curt and not friendly at all. The food came out quickly and was delicious, but we again faced long wait times when trying to pay the bill.
Overall a very disappointing experience. The food was so good and was so fast to come out, but I will be hesitant to take other people there because the service was the worst I have experienced in a long time.
I love this restaurant - great food and a warm, cozy atmosphere. The food is always wonderful. This time I ordered the kaddo borwani ( baby pumpkin in yogurt sauce) to start and it was delicious. Soft, sweet, warm, and flavorful. I ate aushak for my main meal and it was especially good - chocked full of fresh leeks and a wonderful meaty sauce. Helmand is a neighborhood treasure.
The service and food were both excellent. It was a bit dark, which I had read about from other reviews. I was there for a business dinner. The main issue that made the experience unpleasant was not the fault of the restaurant, but rather customers at a neighboring table. They had a toddler who screamed very unhappily and VERY loudly at the top of his lungs for about 45min to an hour before someone finally took him outside (not exaggerating even a little about the volume or duration). Extremely annoying and had to shout to have a conversation. Ruined the first half of our dinner.
The Helmand is my all time favorite restaurant in Baltimore and has been for 20 years. The food is outstanding, the service is quite friendly and professional and the atmosphere is perfect.
Assad and Sadiq are great men who bring warmth and happiness to the dining experience at the Helmand. It is a great place!
Excellent service and very good food. The combination of flavors on the different dishes is extraordinary. On one of the dishes the lamb was a little tough but on another was amazingly tender. The pumpkin appetizer is a star with a succulent flavor with the sweetness of the pumpkin offset with a flavorful yogurt sauce.
The Host was terrible. Awful customer service. Treated me like a street person who lost their way. Ignored my Open Table reservation. Had no appreciation for the fact that the highway to get us there was traffic at dead stop and I called from the car to apologize thinking I would be late. Instaed of appreciating the call well in advance nasty attitude but gave us til 6:45 to get there. We did make it by 6:40, still treated terribly and canceled reservation after I went to desk to make sure it was not canceled. It is one of my groups go to places but noone has been happy to hear how I was treated. I will not be back in the forseeable future. I do not go out to be treated poorly especially when our check was approx $75 for 2 people.
Our party of 8 were warmly welcomed. We all elected to try the four course family style sampler. It was excellent in quality and variety. The kitchen and servers were in perfect sync, delivering perfectly timed courses with aplomb. Our server selected excellent wine for our pleasure. Even our less-intrepid diners were ecstatic with the meal and the Helmand experience.
Took my out of town colleagues here for dinner and everyone couldn't stop raving about how delicious and interested everything was. We ordered two of the pumpkin appetizers because we loved it so much. The steak kabob dish was outstanding, as was the vegetarian platter.
Every time I've eaten here there's a crowd and this time was not an exception. We had a very short wait to be seated although we had a reservation. For a Friday night reservation at 7:15 that's often to be expected. They have one of the best vegetarian options in Baltimore. The staff was helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. Our food was tasty and freshly made. I noticed quite a few people coming in to pick up carry out so if you want to give it a try that looks like an option.
Fabulous Afghan food, authentic spices and delicious. The food comes out very fast. Good spot for a date or a small gathering. Service is friendly and efficient. Lots of vegetarian options as well as meats. Every dish I've had there is delicious. Romantic, dark setting. A little cramped but that's no big deal.
The pumpkin appetizer was amazing - definitely lived up to the hype. Also had a delicious lamb entree with an apricot sauce that was divine. The cardamom ice cream with mango and fig topped off the meal nicely. Extremely happy with the experience and plan on going back soon
