The Helmand Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
I have never had anything but a fabulous experience at The Helmand, dating back many years. The food is consistently superb and the service friendly, quick and attentive. I have never heard anyone complain about any aspect about The Helmand. A role model for all restaurants.
We have eaten here before but the NOISE absolutely prevents conversation. The service was perfunctory with the distinct impression that we were being rushed (presumably so that they could sit someone else). The level of "spicy" was quite high (and lingering). The speed with which the dishes arrived implied that everything was ready at a moment's notice. The likelihood that the "sirloin" on my plate came from that part of the animal is quite low.
A BIG disappointment. No need to return.
Helmand is one of my favorite restaurants in Baltimore. The pumpkin appetizer is always a must, and comes out hot and delicious. A lot of the featured entrees have vegetarian alternatives and if you have a mixed group there are plenty of options. The lamb dishes are all fantastic and the prices are not too expensive for the portion. The waitstaff all know the menu well and have been there for years. I try to make it there a few times a year.
The service was fast, fast, fast. We received our meals in less time than the average McDonald's. We had not been to the Helmand in a while so we had forgotten that although tasty to a degree, the food lacks any sort of presentation.
The wait staff might also need to be reminded that some diners can understand their Spanish when talking to each other.
The tables are packed in to a small space - hardly room to move around. The service was terrible - waiter had no sense of hospitality or enthusiasm about the menu. We felt rushed to eat and rushed to have plates swept away. The food was interesting but there are many other interesting welcoming spots in Baltimore where the food is even better.
The Helmand isn't what it used to be. My latest visit might be my last. The Helmand, apparently in an effort to accommodate as many eager diners as they can, has squeezed the place full of tables. You feel like you're on top of other diners, and it is very loud and noisy. While they have added many tables, they apparently have not added staffing in proportion. My poor server was too busy, distracted, and just provided bad service. It was so bad that one of my dining partners actually got the wrong food - because the server wrote down the wrong order. Service was hurried and inattentive. This was not the higher-end dining experience I had hoped for and expected.
Made an Open Table reservation on 11/9 at the request of the restaurant. We arrived on 11/10 and our reservation was not evident. I showed my email reservation. The host took my phone and scrutinized my information. Finally he said I had an email confirmation so I must have a reservation. He apologized and took us to a table. The wait staff seemed to be running a marathon in a frenetic atmosphere. The wait staff and particularly our server incessantly bumped my chair. I pulled my chair in an awkward position to avoid being bumped. Our server asked if everything was alright. I explained my disgust and the server required the manager to address my issue after apologizing. The manager pulled the adjacent table to give me more room. I had consumed half of me dinner when I asked to have the meal removed. I simply ceased to enjoy the experience.
Eight of us walked up from our hotel, after 4 recommendations. Enthusiastic is our appreciation of this Baltimore standard. This is mild Afghan food, everything well prepared, everything reasonably priced, and .... it just kept coming! All was interesting. All was very good. We ordered the tasting menu, served family style.
The owner/manager and wait staff were delightful. The place was packed on a Wednesday night. And for good reason.
Two of us are foodies and we had a great time, even without the foo-foo that our kind typically require. : --- )
Quality is excellent. Prices are great. Ambience delightful. Enjoy!!
The Helmand continues to be one of the finest restaurants in Baltimore. My wife and I have eaten here many, many times over the last 10 years and I have brought many friends and out of town guests, it never fails to be a wonderful dining Experience. I highly recommend it, and if you have been many times, go again and try something new.. you will not be let down.
Fantastic food! Made a reservation for 6 and the table was ready for us right when we walked it. It was already very busy at this time, so I'd absolutely recommend making reservations. Amazing service! Appetizer and naan came out in what seemed like seconds after ordered it, and the meals came out in a similarly fast fashion. Extremely affordable and the value for the quality and quantity (large portions!!!) is spectacular. Will be a regular!
Food is excellent. Both vegetarians and carnivores can delight in the menu options. The Afghani tastes and spices are authentic. The Banjan Borwani and Aushak are a couple of favorites. The lamb was prepped perfectly. Service and notice - OK. Food trumps any downside.
Our first visit to the Helmand and we were all very pleased. Service was mostly attentive, it was very busy and noisy at first being a Friday night but quickly settled down. Food arrived quickly but we didn't feel rushed. The food was delicious, the lamb superb. Only glitch was my daughter's vegetarian platter was topped with yogurt, even though it was ordered vegan. We will be returning.
Been going here for over 2 yrs, food is consistently flavorful, rich-NOT SPICY-some people get scared of that. Portion sizes are perfect-just enough, with few leftovers. Was packed at 7 pm on a Saturday-great sign. Staff attentive, informative. Only hiccup was the bottle of wine came halfway through our main courses, but this happens. Highly recommend
The food was very good, and the service attentive. The baby pumpkin and yoghurt starter was delicious as always! However the noise was close to unbearable, making a civilized conversation nearly impossible for the early part of the evening. Our reservation was for 8pm, and by 9pm the restaurant was less busy and we could have a normal conversation. If potential diners are making a reservation, and would like to talk with their dining companions - as opposed to needing to nearly shout at them, or miss meaningful conversation all together - they may do well to book a table either early or late in the evening - thus avoiding the peak table occupancy and noise times. This strategy should ensure that all the fine offerings of this lovely restaurant can be full enjoyed, along with the good company of one's table companion(s).
The Helmand's food is always consistent. Always cooked to perfection and flavorful. I had the Chopendez and a side of mushrooms. The steak was perfect and the sides so delicious. My friend had a chicken entrée with a fruit topping that he said was delicious. I am never disappointed in my meal here and it my wife's favorite restaurant in Baltimore. Even when I have been in the middle east, I compare the food to Helmand's. The ice cream with figs is rich and creamy but I love the ice cream with rose water the best. A real treat.
