The Helmand Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
I want to rave but I can’t. Food was good but we rushed from the time we arrived. We had a reservation for 5:45 and they sat us right away. Waitress asked for drink orders and took my husbands appetizer order and walked away without taking mine. His appetizer arrived within 2 minutes. She took my order and I got mine immediately. Waitress kept coming asking what we wanted for dinner . Never told us list of specials was in menu. When we ordered our dinner was served almost immediately. No time to breath. I felt rushed. We ordered tea at the end of the meal and I could see the maitre d looking at our table and our neighbors as if to get us moving. I use to live the Helmand but this was not a good experience. Too bad because the food was good
Our group all enjoy Afghan food and were pleased with our meals. Service was very quick, indicating that we had all ordered pre-prepared dishes. Food doesn't appear to be cooked to order. That said, everything was tasty. I had chicken, which was all white meat and a bit overcooked but covered with a delicious sauce. Servings are large. Good wine list with more variety than I expected. One of our group is a professional foodie and was very pleased with everything.
ORDER LAMB. AVOID THE FISH. Great place for lamb - 3 of 4 of us ordered it. However, 1 in our party ordered fish - BIG MISTAKE! Tasted horrific. Sadly we didn't mention it till the end of the meal. Waitress offered an additional meal, but we were ready to leave. A professional restaurant response would have been to comp the meal. Didn't happen. A reasonably good wine selection, at a fair price. Restaurant was packed for Valentines Day. Surprised by the good acoustics; had no problem conversing at our table.
Love this restaurant and the food is consistently good with many options for vegetarians. We go here often before the theater because the food comes quickly and often with a reservation you are seated upon arrival. My one suggestion to the restaurant which is a recurring issue is to hire a bar back for the bartender. The bar is very slow with the cocktails and last night the bartender was off so a waitress was tending bar and waiting tables. She did a great job juggling both but if the drinks came more quickly, they would make more money off the drinks. Sometimes we order a drink at the bar while waiting for our table and it arrives after we've been seated. The whole idea is to have a drink before dinner. Besides this small issue, Helmand is a favorite spot to go.
I've been to the Helmand countless times. I have a favorite dish I get most times I'm there. On this visit, that dish was very disappointing. I've never had a bad experience with the food until now. I told my server and she quickly offered to get me something different. It took much longer than usual for the food to come out and by the time it did, I wasn't really hungry anymore.
I'm not sure what the cause of the lower quality was and truly hope it was just an off night. It was very busy but I've been there on busy nights before and still had delicious food.
I'll go back but not sure that it will be soon.
This place was packed! We showed up with an extra person and without a blink, an extra place was set at the table and our reservation was honored. We ordered the three appetizers-pumpkin, eggplant and naan. They were all delicious. For entrees, we had a vegetarian entree, two chicken dishes and two lamb dishes. They were also great. A very nice dinner for all.
Food is terrific. Service is prompt and polite. It is a bit crowded as you enter by a coat rack in a narrow hall- people coming and going, it's a general hubbub. But we only waited 5 minutes for reservation to be executed and food is worth the wait. I look forward to returning many times.
Restaurant was busy so we ran about 15-20 minutes late for our reservation but enjoyed the food and service was prompt even with the crowd.
Stand out dishes were the lamb lawlad, the beef tenderloins, and the hazelnut cake (which was light and crunchy). Would skip the slowcooked lamb with apricots — it was tender but a bit sweet for my tastes.
Would definitely return!
The service was attentive and professional even though, as usual , the restaurant was crowded. They want you to enjoy their wonderful food. It’s hard to leave room for the excellent desserts but try not to miss having one. Good menu for vegetarians and non dining together.
I had no clue that it was Restaurant Week. I wanted to eat somewhere where my friend Mike and I could get our meat but our friend Beth had plenty of veggie options. I already have much love of Afghan meat from Mimi Kabab (and some of the other Pashtu places that are around D.C.) so I knew that I would like the fare. The appetizers were delicious. The meat was simply wonderful. I also enjoyed my dessert (though EVERYTHING is smothered in cardemum... not awful every once in awhile). My friend said it was the best birthday dinner he had in years so I was very very happy.
We had an ambivalent experience. The food was very good, but not spectacular. The noise level was deafening, to the point where the four of us really couldn't talk at all - this would have pretty much ruined our evening, even if everything else had been perfect. The service was spotty. The food came out very fast, but then, when we wanted to leave, it seemed like we waited forever to find our waiter to let him know. This was generally disappointing - I had visited the Helmand about ten years ago, and I had a much more positive experience back then.
