The Helmand Restaurant
Baltimore (and Boston) institution that has lost nothing over time. Same delicious and authentic Afghan food as decades ago. Some of same friendly and knowledgeable wait staff too.
Always great food, service and atmosphere. Highly recommend for dinner with friends or with your partner.
Amazing vegetarian options.
Very busy restaurant. Odd configuration at the entrance, where one is supposed to stand to wait to be seated. We walked back to what looked like the right place, only to be ignored by a busy and perhaps overworked wait staff for a while. We interrupted them to learn where to stand, and finally were seated. Good food, reasonably priced, but a rushed service, not what we had seen in the past. Probably won't go back.
The Helmand is always wonderful. It’s nice that the food at the restaurant is predictably and consistently delicious. Service is attentive but not obtrusive.
My daughter, who has celiac disease, can eat at the Helmand. Other than Petit Louis, there is no other Baltimore restaurant that also serves food with gluten-containing ingredients, where she’s always been able to eat without at least sometimes being sick for days afterward. The Helmand is very careful to avoid cross-contamination and for this I am grateful.
Love the food here. Started with baby pumpkin appetizer - woderful! We had vegetarian meals which were equally good, as we shared tastes of each other's. Bread was lovely.
Perfect place for a dinner especially in the wintertime.
The food is outstanding!
The Helmand is one of our favorite restaurants and it never disappoints. Today was a special Birthday celebration for my lady. We drove 90 minutes in traffic to get there and it was worth it. The food, service, and ambiance made it a wonderful and memorable celebration.
As a world traveler who has eaten at the best restaurants in the world, I believe that the Helmand is truly among the very best. The food is healthy, extremely tasty, and the presentation invariably excellent. I particularly like the ambiance in the inner dining room. Concerning food choices, everything that I have ever tried here was a winner. This restaurant often has specials during certain times like Restaurant Week or Valentine Day which are quite elaborate although still very well priced. Many of its dishes can be served with vegetables and no meat if that is one's choice. If you are considering eating at this restaurant, RUN, DON'T WALK, it's that wonderful!!!
Great place for a sit down dinner! All of our food was delicious, and presented very nicely. We were literally stuffing our faces and had to step back and relax. Went during Valentine’s Day, so it was packed which slowed down our service overall, but it didn’t deter from the overall experience. I will be back soon and have already recommended this place to some friends and family.
Food was great. Service was a bit slow, but waitstaff was very friendly.
Excellent as always.....food, service, ambiance. Helmand has been consistently wonderful since they opened a couple decades ago!!
Amazing food. Great service. Really love this restaurant.
One of a kind restaurant. Vegetarian meals don’t disappoint. Soups are perfection. Pumpkin dish worth traveling to try. Vegetarian Mantwo is drool worthy. And the cardamon ice cream with a cup of coffee ends a perfect meal perfectly. Loved.
The food is always so delicious. I always eat here before heading to the theater.
Food and service were amazing but it is a very small restaurant and we couldn’t really hear each other because it was packed.
As always an outstanding experience. The staff is very friendly and most helpful. You can't go wrong dining there.
After 25 years the food is still invariably delicious. Amazing consistency. Crisp service. IMO its best to go after 9:30 pm on Fridays and Saturdays as it gets a little quieter then.
Very accommodating service! Great food! Too loud for "old folks!"
LOVE The Helmand--wish I could get there more often! The food is fantastic and the service terrific. Could not be happier with our dining experience.
Can not believe we waited this long to try this fantastic restaurant! Pumpkin appetizer was amazing as well as the Vegetarian Dolma and Chicken Kebab. Lively crowd for a mid week dining. Great service. Looking forward to a return trip!
One of our favorite restaurants that never disappoints.
We made reservations for a Saturday evening and arrived 10 minutes prior to our reservation. The place was packed and there seemed to be no real organization as far as greeting customers. There were about 10 people crammed at the entrance and the seater would approach the first person he saw. He didn't bother to find who was "next". The dining room was obnoxiously loud. So loud that my wife and I had to yell across the table just to talk. Unfortunately we decided to avoid any unnecessary conversation. The waiter was awesome and the food amazing! We didn't like that the tables for 2 were only about 14" apart from each other which made it feel like we were dining with another couple. Overall the food and waiter were both great. Maybe we'll return during the week where hopefully the sound level is significantly less.
An old favorite that proves us right every time we return
We took family members and a couple of friends who recently moved to Baltimore. Great ambience, good service and amazing food. The Helmand is a Baltimore cornerstone we love to share!
Wow. Food is incredible. Would recommend to anyone in Baltimore City. Price is great, portions are large, and the taste is exquisite. Love the authentic Helmand province flavors and decor.
I have been dining at the Helmand for almost two decades. The restaurant has always had tasty food and excellent service. My favorite dish is the chowpan, a half-rack of lamb chops marinated and grilled to perfection, served with pallow rice and a mint-based sauce. Last week I took my guest to the Helmand at 7:15 pm. The place is usually buzzing at at this time of day, but last Saturday it was even busier than usual, which I attribute to the end of the Baltimore Restaurant Week. We had to wait for 10 minutes to get our table and you could see that the staff (including the manager) were struggling to keep up with the crowd. Nonetheless, once we were seated and chose our food and wine, the appetizers showed up quickly and the main dishes (the chowpan, of course) followed not far behind. Kudos to the kitchen and staff who were able to perform as usual in this busy atmosphere. I should mention that the Helmand not only has excellent meat dishes but also a good variety of vegetarian ones. The place is highly recommended for its good food and fast service.
Great appetizers -- shornakhod and kadda borawni. Shaftalu are wonderful main dishes. Naan was hot and delicious.
Dinner was excellent, as usual. Food is well-seasoned -- spicy but not hot. Portions are generous -- I always take some home. Service is superb. Food is delivered promptly while hot. Waiter checks often to see if anything is required and brings the check without delay. All of this even when the restaurant is very busy. Helmand is one of the best in the city.
Food that is consistently delicious! Never disappointed. Candlelit ambiance and great service. We love the flavors and are always amazed at how flavorful and unique the dishes are. The vegetarian platter is my favorite (and I’m not a vegetarian) but I haven’t had a bad meal here yet and it’s been over 10 yrs. For dessert the Jala ice cream and hazelnut torte are delicious and the Turkish coffee is spot on-reminds me of my time in the Gaza Desert. It’s nice enough to go for special occasions but not too nice for a casual dinner out. The Helmand is a Baltimore gem that highlights the diversity and quality of the Baltimore food scene.
A Baltimore classic! Food is consistently good. Highly recommended.
Everything was lovely. The food, the service, and ambience. The food was incredibly flavorful from the first bite to the last. No wonder they've been in business 30 years. Cannot wait to return!
Always great ambience and food.
Visiting B’more on business. Helmand was a good dinner destination but not great. Despite small crowd, diners were not distributed throughout the space but somewhat crowded together. This was not conducive to private table conversation but enabled overhearing of multiple conversations. Service was B- ; Food was very good. I’ll likely go again when next visiting.
First time there
Food was excellent
Helmand serves up consistently delicious fare in a cozy, elegant atmosphere at very reasonable prices
This a stunningly beautiful restaurant experience at a price that isn't too steep. The food is authentic and prepared skillfully. Servers are fast and professional. I am constantly amazed at how good the food and experience is here.
This restaurant is great. We've been many times over the years. The service is excellent. Variety of dishes to choose from all reasonably priced. Food comes quickly so if your looking to stay a while don't order too quickly. I like sitting in the main dining room. Get the Turkish coffee and afghan ice cream after dinner. We'll be back!
Very disappointed in food. Very bland compared to Afghan restaurants in other cities.
The Helmand continues to please as a great value in Afghan cuisine. Appetizers, soups, entrees and desserts are all delicious, with no drop-off in food quality or taste. We plan to introduce more of our extended family to this fined dining site and experience!
