The Helmand Restaurant
Always consistent- delicious flavor food, ample portions and very attentive service.
This place has really gone down since I last ate here a few years ago. Although we had made a reservation for three, the restaurant seated our party of three at a table for two but seated some other groups of two at tables for four. The seating arrangement was a bit embarrassing, as we brought an out-of-town guest here and had praised the restaurant's service and food. Our entrees arrived almost instantly after we ordered, with giant hunks of chewy white meat chicken in a vegetable sauce. The sauce was good, but it was quite a chore to eat the chicken. I was told that the lamb was similarly overcooked. What a disappointing experience :(
Rather than take us to the table we were waved to a couple tables. Then we. Chose the wrong one
Tables so close hardly any privacy
Wish they had fancy coffee after dinner drinks
This restaurant is the first in a long line of middle eastern food places. It’s survival speaks to the quality. It still provides good value ( though prices continue to rise) and excellent flavors. Nice use of rice and the lamb, no matter the style of prep, is always terrific. Parking can be a challenge or costly. Wonderful experience.
Great food. Very hurried service and very noisy. Easy but expensive parking
A relative visiting
Amazing food. Amazing service and attention to details. Amazing little place to visit. Get the pumpkin.
Food continues to be delicious. Service very good.
I love The Helmand. The service is always great! I don't know why the person who seated us was so grumpy but other than that one person - everyone was great and welcoming and the food was wonderful.
Excellent food, great service. Easily accommodated our 9 person group.
Wonderful food, attentive service, festive ambiance. However, I feel that the noise level has increased over the years to an uncomfortable level, and some type of sound baffling materials need to be tried to make dining there more enjoyable.
Keep up the good work! We count on your being there and have now for quite a number of years. Thank you for good service and good food!
Delicious food. Good service. A little noisy because of the crowded dining room. A great dining experience. I've found a new favorite cuisine.
Food and service are amazing. Not cheap but worth it
As always, we had a great meal and a great experience at the Helmand. We were initially seated at a table right in the flow of traffic, and asked to be moved. They graciously moved us within minutes, to a comfortable table. Despite being absolutely packed, the service was cheerful and prompt. It’s their 30th anniversary this week, and I hope they keep going for another 30!
A little dark, but the food and service was really great!
Delightful evening at The Helmand Restaurant. The Kaddo Borwani (pumpkin) and Banjan Borwani (eggplant) appetizers were wonderful. In past visits we had three other appetizers that everyone shared and liked - the Aushak, the Mantwo and the Vegitarian Aush soup. Main courses were perfect - the lamb kebab with spinach to replace the pallow and the Chopendez with pallow. The Afghan bread and cilantro vinegrette are also very nice additions and came with the appetizers. Finally, we ended the meal with the "special" ice cream with dried fruit, nuts and cardamom. The service was fast and friendly and the setting was comfortable with only moderate background noise. We had a wonderful time.
Fantastic meal! Was in town for a conference and a friend and I chose this place because it came highly recommended by a local. The pumpkin appetizer was delicious, and I really enjoyed my vegetarian plate! Lots of veggies and lots of spices!
Our party of four really enjoyed the Helmand after the matinee at the nearby Spotlighters Theater. My lamb dish was very interesting, with a spicy, sweet sauce. Everyone in our party enjoyed their dinner. Service was pleasant and efficient, and the ambience spirited but pleasant.
The Helmand is a great restaurant, been eating there for 20 years. That being said, recently the visits havent been as pleasant. When you come as a couple, too often you're seated in the front room at these little tables that are placed along a walkway, or back at the bar. As busy as it is there, that can make for some less-than-intimate dining. Friday night we were seated in the back, next to the bar...where about 20 people were standing, waiting for tables. It was very unpleasant - there was literally someone standing right next to me throughout the meal, and I was jostled several times by waitpersons going past. 3 or my last 4 visits, I've been seated either there, or along the walkway - which is better, but only by degree. I'm starting to think I should come there when I'm only into the food, not my company.
I know it's not their 'fault' that they have no real waiting area (when we left, we could see that the diners just inside the front door were equally challenged by people up against the tables), but it will be a factor in my decisions to eat there again.
Helmand never disappoints. We love their lamb, pumpkin and eggplant dishes especially. And the ice cream with dates and other fruit is divine!
Always great, have been coming for 24 years. Always happy to come back
We went to The Helmand for the first time before a show at The Lyric Opera House this past Friday. We had a reservation for a time before 6pm and when we were finishing, there were a lot of people being seated. The lamb stew and the chicken stew with some yogurt on top were delicious. The Afghan naan was also delicious with the butter. We should have ordered the small naan as there was just the two of us. The service by the waiter could have been better. He came to our table right away to ask what drinks we wanted but when we ordered tea and coffee, it seemed liked he disappeared for a while. We had questions about the menu and their specialties since it was our first time. The person refilling the water was responsive. The food came out very quickly after we ordered. The waiter didn't come back for the 2 or 3 minute check back (after our food was delivered) to see if we needed anything. We will definitely return based upon the quality of the food and the variety on the menu.
This is by far in my top 5 favorite restaurants across the country!
Visiting Baltimore for only four days and ate there twice I would highly recommend it service is excellent unique and wonderful foodIt’s deafly not to be missed.
Only disappointment was getting notification from Open Table afterwards that we did not honor our reservation. We were there, indicated we had a reservation and checked in. Everything else was great. Food is delicious, service was very attentive without being overbearing.
Wonderful restaurant with excellent service and delicious food! The owner is warm and welcoming. Always a wonderful experience and we cant wait to go back
Very nice dinner. Servers were very professional. Only complaint was the food came out too fast (it is not cooked to order) and the check arrived well before we were done.
Tonight's dinner at Helmand was the best ever. We have gone to the Helmand annually when we are in Baltimore and it has always been good. But tonight's dinner was fabulous... delicious all around. The lamb was tender, the eggplant melted in our mouths...I could continue to rave. Great job!
The food was delicious, as usual. It did come out very quickly, and it would have been nice for my dinner partner and me if we'd had a little more time to relax between ordering the food and its being served. Overall, a good dining experience.
Baltimore (and Boston) institution that has lost nothing over time. Same delicious and authentic Afghan food as decades ago. Some of same friendly and knowledgeable wait staff too.
Great. Loved the food. Loved the setting
Always great food, service and atmosphere. Highly recommend for dinner with friends or with your partner.
Amazing vegetarian options.
Very busy restaurant. Odd configuration at the entrance, where one is supposed to stand to wait to be seated. We walked back to what looked like the right place, only to be ignored by a busy and perhaps overworked wait staff for a while. We interrupted them to learn where to stand, and finally were seated. Good food, reasonably priced, but a rushed service, not what we had seen in the past. Probably won't go back.
The Helmand is always wonderful. It’s nice that the food at the restaurant is predictably and consistently delicious. Service is attentive but not obtrusive.
My daughter, who has celiac disease, can eat at the Helmand. Other than Petit Louis, there is no other Baltimore restaurant that also serves food with gluten-containing ingredients, where she’s always been able to eat without at least sometimes being sick for days afterward. The Helmand is very careful to avoid cross-contamination and for this I am grateful.
Love the food here. Started with baby pumpkin appetizer - woderful! We had vegetarian meals which were equally good, as we shared tastes of each other's. Bread was lovely.
Perfect place for a dinner especially in the wintertime.
The food is outstanding!
The Helmand is one of our favorite restaurants and it never disappoints. Today was a special Birthday celebration for my lady. We drove 90 minutes in traffic to get there and it was worth it. The food, service, and ambiance made it a wonderful and memorable celebration.
As a world traveler who has eaten at the best restaurants in the world, I believe that the Helmand is truly among the very best. The food is healthy, extremely tasty, and the presentation invariably excellent. I particularly like the ambiance in the inner dining room. Concerning food choices, everything that I have ever tried here was a winner. This restaurant often has specials during certain times like Restaurant Week or Valentine Day which are quite elaborate although still very well priced. Many of its dishes can be served with vegetables and no meat if that is one's choice. If you are considering eating at this restaurant, RUN, DON'T WALK, it's that wonderful!!!
