The Haven is always a really unique space to head to - they do a nice job in keeping traditional Scottish themes alive. Great atmosphere, very pleasant staff.
Love this place. Service is terrific and the atmosphere adds to the ambiance.
Owner was very friendly and present. Greeted us on the way in and out and he was wearing a kilt. Awesome.
The Haven is a great spot for casual dining along with themed special events. The menu is large enough that everybody will find something they like. Of particular note are the Scotch eggs and the fabulous burgers. The beer list is very good and the Scotch whisky list is fabulous. If you want a true guilty pleasure have the deep fried Mars bar for a true Scottish sweet tooth delight.
Food was tasty, but its Scottish aspect, limited the choices for this plain food eater.
Lovely, Boston’s best fish and chips
Fish dinner was good, but not outstanding. Very much enjoyed the cullen skink. And of course you can't go wrong with a pint of Belhaven Scottish Ale!
As always, the Haven was a lovely choice for a random date night with my husband. The White Sassitch and Mash was delicious, and surrounded by well seasoned veggies. We always get the scotch deviled eggs and fish and chips, but this visit they were the best we've had there!
The Haven is one of my favorite gems of Boston. The staff are in tune to customers and very friendly, the servers are experts on Scotch and beer and proud of the food menu. I always can’t decide what to order because you can’t go wrong.
Pot pie and shepherd's pie were awesome, and a great beer list here with a wide variety of Scottish beers and ginger beers.
They were overbooked so I had to sit on stool at the bar. Not very comfortable. Otherwise OK.
What else can be said about Scottish perfection that doesn't require a passport and a flight?
DELICIOUS food & awesome decorations. Service was a bit slow but they were extremely busy.
Not only was the food fantastic—but the Scottish ambiance was top-notch. They even had live music complete with a fiddler, guitarist, and bag-pipe player! Does it get any better!?
Food was great but it would be nice to have some kind of alternative to dairy for the coffee. Had to ditch the coffee I'd ordered and get some green tea. Ambiance is very nice. Love the old wood!
We were a little uncertain about some of the unfamiliar Scottish menu offerings, so we played it safe and went with familiar dishes. I can't say enough about the Shepherd's Pie made with lamb. It was so flavorful! We also tried the chicken pot pie, the mussels appetizer, and the butternut squash soup. All were delicious. We tried 2 of the desserts and they were both outstanding as well. Wonderful comfort food on a cold winter's night.
Love that we have a scottish restaurant in Boston! The haven is a cozy haven from the hectic pace of Boston - we thoroughly enjoyed brunch & look forward to returning for dinner!
Friendly and fun. The salmon was delicious.
The Haven is a staple for us. Truly a wonderful, hidden gem with the best burger I’ve ever tasted.
My wife and I had a great, authentic Scottish meal then we stayed for the dram tasting which was really fun and educational. The wait staff is friendly and the owner is really knowledgeable about scotch. We loved it so much we went back in the morning for an amazing full Scottish breakfast!
As every time previously, The Haven lived up to highest expectations. The food was excellent and the service was well beyond reproach. All personnel, including Jason, the owner who came to our table for a brief chat, are exceptionally friendly and welcoming. This great spot is perfect for all types of people and everyone is cordially treated. The Haven is definitely a welcome gem in Jamaica Plain!!!
Great and local. Recommend highly. Love the vibe and the food
Great Scotch! They have a great menu of scotches and weekly tastings. Pair that with some traditional and creative Scottish foods and you are in for a fun night.
Greeted immediately on arrival. Offered a choice of seating. Ordered a cheese plate that is on the dessert menu as a starter. So good! The blue cheese was amazing! Got a salad and the fish supper. Ended up bringing the salad home. Not as crowded as usual which was nice.
Best service we’ve had in a long time. Friendly staff, great food!
We love The Haven and drive over from Cambridge for an occasional Friday night beer or come for special occasions with groups large or small. They always have a vegetarian entree. Really appreciated the staff asking about our plaids when we wore plaid for Saturday. Our Scots family love taking both non-Scots local friends as well as family when they're in from out-of-town! A wee drap'a'haem!
Crazy crowded, loud and lively. Friendly staff. Waited 10 minutes to be seated. Once seated, drinks came quickly, the fried fish was excellent.
Very attentive service and consistently delicious food. Great spot.
Always a great time at the Haven! You don't have to be Scottish, but if you're even a little bit Scottish, it's a little bit of heaven. And now they have a full liquor license which means no end of single-malt scotch.
Feels like you're eating in Scotland, without the need for a plane ticket!
We always go to The Haven when I visit my son whose school is nearby. Sometimes we go twice in one week! I love the atmosphere which is cozy and busy but not too noisy. The authentic Scottish menu is not huge but has just enough variety for everyone's tastes. The shepherd's pie, smoked fish soup and battered haddock are great. I love the chicken served with rumbledethumps. You have to love something with that name! The sticky toffee pudding (my favorite dessert) is usually very good. I love the decor, especially the paintings of sheep which are for sale. Elderflower cider is usually on the menu and that is worth the visit by itself.
In town for four nights, at the suggestion of a friend we ventured out for a taste of Scotland, which we got. The Bellhaven beer, imported from Scotland is excellent, as was the Scottish salmon. If it hadn't been for the American voices, we could have been in Scotland.
Love The Haven! Service is fab--wines very good--food excellent--salmon was crispy and delicious! Perfect autumnal get together conducive to great cozy conversation! We lingered:))
Love this place! We live a fair distance from it, so we only get to visit about twice a year—but well worth the drive. Service is consistently fantastic, food is good, the owner usually greets us at the door with that wonderful beguiling Scottish accent. This place is Boston’s best kept secret. We’ll be back soon!
Really loved the ambiance. The food was good -- we loved the salmon and the shepherd's pie, though I'd skip the veggie burger next time. This would be a wonderful place to go on a cold evening -- very cozy and friendly.
Great place. Amazing food. Lovely staff.
We recently dined at The Haven for the first time. The service was excellent - attentive and solicitous without being intrusive. We started with the veggie bridies (a half-moon-shaped mini hand pie filled with cauliflower and other veggies). The outer pastry, in particular, was delicious. My husband and brother both ordered the white pudding sassitch & mash (chicken sausage with mashed potatoes and other veggies). One of them liked it a lot, while the other didn't care for it. I had The Haven Burger, which was more like a Heaven Burger - outstanding! The generous (8 oz.!) patty was topped with flavorful Huntsman cheese (which I had never eaten before), house-made bacon-onion marmalade (incredible!) and pickle sauce (delicious), lettuce and tomato, and the bun was excellent. The "hand cut thick chips" (huge "steak fries") were great. (I would have preferred them a bit crisper, but I also know it's hard to get such thick fries crisp.) All the portions were quite generous and we really didn't have room for dessert, but couldn't pass up the chance to try a deep-fried Mars bar, so we split one three ways so we all could have a taste. It was out of this world (couldn't resist the pun)!
I already loved the Haven for dinner, and after having the full Scottish breakfast - full of house made bacon, black and white pudding, baked beans and tattie scones- I love it there even more. The full liquor license finally came through so my husband could have his proper dram of peaty whiskey too! They were accommodating to our need for a toddler-friendly table, and the noise level is very forgiving for 2 year old sounds. Such a neighborhood gem!
We discovered the Haven a few years ago and come back a couple of times a year. Located just off Centre Street in Jamaica Plain it is a local neighborhood restaurant. The portions are large and the fish and chips was very good with some of the freshest fish we've ever had in this dish.
Great service, cool ambiance, delicious food. Reasonably priced for hearty, well portioned food. No wait for Saturday brunch either! Highly recommend.
