The Haven Ratings and Reviews
We always go to The Haven when I visit my son whose school is nearby. Sometimes we go twice in one week! I love the atmosphere which is cozy and busy but not too noisy. The authentic Scottish menu is not huge but has just enough variety for everyone's tastes. The shepherd's pie, smoked fish soup and battered haddock are great. I love the chicken served with rumbledethumps. You have to love something with that name! The sticky toffee pudding (my favorite dessert) is usually very good. I love the decor, especially the paintings of sheep which are for sale. Elderflower cider is usually on the menu and that is worth the visit by itself.
In town for four nights, at the suggestion of a friend we ventured out for a taste of Scotland, which we got. The Bellhaven beer, imported from Scotland is excellent, as was the Scottish salmon. If it hadn't been for the American voices, we could have been in Scotland.
Love this place! We live a fair distance from it, so we only get to visit about twice a year—but well worth the drive. Service is consistently fantastic, food is good, the owner usually greets us at the door with that wonderful beguiling Scottish accent. This place is Boston’s best kept secret. We’ll be back soon!
We recently dined at The Haven for the first time. The service was excellent - attentive and solicitous without being intrusive. We started with the veggie bridies (a half-moon-shaped mini hand pie filled with cauliflower and other veggies). The outer pastry, in particular, was delicious. My husband and brother both ordered the white pudding sassitch & mash (chicken sausage with mashed potatoes and other veggies). One of them liked it a lot, while the other didn't care for it. I had The Haven Burger, which was more like a Heaven Burger - outstanding! The generous (8 oz.!) patty was topped with flavorful Huntsman cheese (which I had never eaten before), house-made bacon-onion marmalade (incredible!) and pickle sauce (delicious), lettuce and tomato, and the bun was excellent. The "hand cut thick chips" (huge "steak fries") were great. (I would have preferred them a bit crisper, but I also know it's hard to get such thick fries crisp.) All the portions were quite generous and we really didn't have room for dessert, but couldn't pass up the chance to try a deep-fried Mars bar, so we split one three ways so we all could have a taste. It was out of this world (couldn't resist the pun)!
I already loved the Haven for dinner, and after having the full Scottish breakfast - full of house made bacon, black and white pudding, baked beans and tattie scones- I love it there even more. The full liquor license finally came through so my husband could have his proper dram of peaty whiskey too! They were accommodating to our need for a toddler-friendly table, and the noise level is very forgiving for 2 year old sounds. Such a neighborhood gem!
We discovered the Haven a few years ago and come back a couple of times a year. Located just off Centre Street in Jamaica Plain it is a local neighborhood restaurant. The portions are large and the fish and chips was very good with some of the freshest fish we've ever had in this dish.
We had the most amazing meal for the last night of our trip in the US. The owner Andy & girls who served us were lovely & looked after us so well. The food & cocktails were great - we had the burger and fish & chips which were delicious. Would definitely recommend.
The food was very good and I really like how veggie friendly this place is, despite the cultural cuisine being very meat heavy. The drinks menu was very comprehensive and had great variety. The dessert menu was also varied and had great options. One of the waitress seemed annoyed at us, but overall the service was friendly and attentive.
We had the beet pickled salmon, mussels, and finnen haddie spread appetiser, the salmon entre, the chicken sausage, and the vegan vindaloo. It was all good, although the overall effect was of "comfort food" rather than a gastronomic adventure. But the prices were reasonable, the staff very attentive and friendly, and I'm sure I'll return.
Forget the chi-chi burger joints!
I hadn't been to The Haven in awhile. Was lukewarm about the dinner we had. But I decided to go there for lunch on my birthday. I ordered their Haven Burger. It was fabulous. Juicy, tasty, included an arugula salad, and with a perfect bun. Had to cut it in half to eat it. What a delicious surprise.
I've been to many of the chi-chi burger joints -- 5 Napkin Burger, Tasty Burger, Five Guys, Uburger, etc. -- and have been very disappointed. Hyped to hell and lacking. The Haven burger competes with the gourmet ones at JM Curley and Gallows. Definitely will go back when I get a burger hankering!
Our food was excellent. This was our first visit and we drove 1.5 hrs, just to try it. Only 1 negative was the cramped seating. For a family of 5, who are all tall, it was a little uncomfortable. If you live closer, definitely go, as I said before, the food was excellent and my husband enjoyed their excellent selection of scotch whiskey'.
The food was outstanding and the service was excellent! I live in the neighborhood and cannot believe I have not been here sooner. The fish and chips with the mushy peas reminded me of Ireland. The fish was crispy and the fries were hand cut; both were cooked to perfection. The cheese plate was generous on the cheese and well balanced. The lamb shank was on point; decedent, flavorful and huuuuge! The 99' Flake was the perfect way to end the meal, although all of the desserts sounded fabulous. My Irish sister-in-law is always talking about a "flake" and when they had one on the menu I knew I had to try it. Needless to say, I will definitely be adding this to my restaurant rotation. Everything about this place makes you feel like you have flow across the Atlantic and entered a quaint little Scottish pub far far away from the daily city grind of Boston.
I've wanted to try the Haven for some time for the "Scottish" food. They have haggis but that's not for me. My husband had the salmon and I had a 1/2 chicken which were delish. I loved the barley risotto. I forget the name of the vegs with my chicken which was a mix of potatoes, turnip and onion and was very good.
The only complaint I have is that the noise level was excruciating. I have hearing loss and my husband is deaf in one ear, conversation was impossible.
My sister and I both had the oats with poached egg on top and it was incredibly bland. I don't know if maybe I just don't like Scottish food, but I was very unimpressed. I had to go to whole foods after for a snack. Service was fine and the overall experience was enjoyable; if only the food had followed suit! My mom and husband got the quiche, which they said was fine, so at least they enjoyed their brunches.
This place was such a unique and exciting to bring my wife and kids for Mother's Day. We loved the atmosphere and service. The food was a great change of pace for from the typical Mother's Day meal. This might become a new family tradition.
Always a feast for the eyes, ears, and tastebuds. Charming, cozy space for locals in JP that welcomes all lovers of things Scottish. Creative menu of traditional Scottish fare + local seasonal inflections. Have a rollicking time at the bar, a clamorous gathering at a large table in the dining room, or an intimate convo and meal in one of the smaller nooks for two.
Delicious food. Cozy . Very quiet for a friday night so a little dissapointing in pub like atmosphere . Clearly not a busy time in jp . We live in cambridge and at 6 pm on a friday you can barrly get in the door of a gastro pub
But attentive service and really good food !
Would recommend highly.
Maybe its busier at other times !
I just really love a lot of hustle and bustle when i go out !
The Haven is my all time favorite. A JP Neighborhood Jem that also happens to be one of the best restaurants in Boston. Delicious food, cozy atmosphere, and awesome service! Owner Jason and Andy the bartender are the best. You really feel like you're worlds away in a Scottish pub. Also, try the Skullsplitters...best imported beer around.
