The Hard Shell - Bellgrade Ratings and Reviews
I have eaten at all of the so called best seafood restaurants in Richmond and I would rate the seafood at Hard Shell as having the most consistent quality. I have never eaten any bad seafood at Hard Shell unlike the other seafood restaurants in Richmond. The only other restaurant that I would rate this highly is Lemaire.
We have been there many times. One (or both) of us often orders the Simply Grilled option, especially if we have somewhere else to go that evening. My Simply Grilled was fine; my husband’s (Mahi + the 2 sides) was most disappointing ( and yes, he has ordered this same Mahi choice quite a few times). This time, the portion of Mahi was comically small...it seemed to be a half-portion! My husband, a true gentleman, is not one to complain...I WOULD have. I gave him one of my Simply Grilled shrimp out of sorrow.
When this email survey came today, I felt you needed to know about our disappointment. The kitchen certainly did not give us our money’s worth.
This was our second valentines dinner in a row here. The last year was great. This year not so much. The lobsters were way over cooked. They were tough and rubbery. The waitress checked on us once at the very beginning of our meal before we even tasted the lobster. Then only after we had finished eating. By that time we just decided to eat the meals anyway. I don’t send food back. I am not hard to please either. But when I pay for an expensive meal I expect to get a properly cooked meal. This was not.
My wife visited early on Valentines Day, to beat the rush. We were pleased to see lamb on the table and both ordered it. We also ordered a salad and soup. After seeing other tables who came in after us get their order we waited. They finally came out with the entree but had yet to receive our first course, so we cancelled it. The server was apologetic and offered to comp a dessert. The lamb was very mild and a little tough. It was still an enjoyable evening and we enjoyed the free desserts.
Crab cakes were very bland. Risotto had no flavor at all. Too much garnish. Did not give us any tools to crack open the crab legs; had to ask for them. Had to go looking for wait staff. Manager never said anything to us, even after the waitress took my wife’s plate back; his cell phone seemed more important. Great price on crab legs, too bad the rest of the food wasn’t good. Won’t be returning. Waste of $75.
We have been many times for dinner but this was the first time for Brunch and we really enjoyed and will definitely go back. We attend various restaurants on Sunday after early morning church service and this is one we will recommend to family, friends and co-workers
We love this place, it has a comfortable dining room that allows for a private conversation. The seafood is fresh and full of flavor. The snowcrab and rib combo was so good my date ate most of my meal. The food as always was outstanding the service was outstanding. I would recommend this place to all my friends and we will return for another round of great seafood and service.
The establishment was clean and ambiance was great. I love 80s music so I enjoyed the selection. The server was very good and also honest when we asked questions about the menu. The soup (she crab and lobster bisque) were delicious! I could take the soups and my meal. The crab cakes were also great! No my husband and I’d sides for our meal were a different story. The asparagus had no seasoning what so ever. I typically see restaurants serve asparagus sautéed and seasoned. This asparagus was steamed with no seasoning. The “whipped” potatoes were hard and stiff. The also has a taste of boxed mashed potatoes. Granted the server did bring me a different side... I really couldn’t believe that the hard shell thought it was okay to plate those sides...
I went there for my BD with my granddaughter. She enjoyed a Gluten-free non seafood entrée while I enjoyed a specially prepared seafood entrée. The food was excellent & Bill provided excellent service above & beyond the call of duty. The chef & he made sure that I enjoyed my wonderful seafood dinner. I highly recommend this restaurant for special occasions! The only drawback was that it was hard to carry on a conversation due to the noise level.
Everything is just amazing at The Hard Shell. We go there for special occasions and the meals, service and ambiance never disappoint. Our server Bill, whom we've had several times, is terrific, and the food is just incredible. Seriously incredible. And the value for what you get is really good too, way better than the top tier steakhouses, etc. in town. Can't recommend it highly enough!
It was the first time at the Hard Shell. We were happy with the atmosphere. Our server, Bill was great. He gave us some good recommendations and was very helpful. His service was outstanding also. The food was good, but not great. The portions were on the small side. The salads where actually better than the main entrees. The prices were not out of line for an upscale establishment, but we were a little disappointed. We both said when we left that we would probably not go back unless it was a function planned by someone else. Again, it was not bad at all, but there are lots of great choices in the Richmond area for seafood.
Ruby Salts, Mussels, and Calamari appetizers were outstanding. Entres included Fried Oysters, Salmon, and Scallops, all were prepared exceptionally. The wine list is very good with reasonably priced options. The Hard Shell corners the seafood market in the Richmond area.
Great service. Lobster dip was great!! Stuffed lobster entre was not stuffed. Rather, a crab cake was lying on top. Very difficult to extract meat from the lobster tail. Bar items were good and very creative. Creme broule was excellent. Beignet-not so much.
Dinner was delicious and quickly served. It was a Tuesday night so the kitchen wasn't too busy, but I would be willing to bet that the service would be good any night of the week. My husband had the shrimp and grits. He said it was very good. I agree. I stole a bite or two. 🙂 I ordered the grilled salmon and it was cooked to perfection. Crispy brussels sprouts as my side were yummy as well. This was our 1st time there but it won't be our last.
We took our good friends to dinner as they were lovers of fish dishes and seafood as were we. Our waitress (Gigi) was fabulous, not only with her recommendations but also with her delightful conversation. Among us we had the lobster chowder, she crab soup, grilled fish, crab pasta and Hard Shell seafood pasta - - all delicious. As this was the first time at the Hard Shell we were quite pleased with the experience and look forward to coming again.
It was very cold outside so the restaurant was not busy at all. Service was great - staff was very friendly and didn't hover. The food was delicious. This was our first time here - we couldn't believe we'd never tried this before. Recommend for anyone wanting a good meal.
Fantastic experience! Even though it was NYE, which is typically hectic, we had reservations & they got us in right on time. Our server, Rachel, was extraordinary & really on top of things. I had raw oysters, lobster chowder & rockfish and everything was delicious.
We had a nice time at your restaurant. We enjoyed our filet mignon and lobster tail dinner however there were two vegetables with which we were quite disappointed. Sautéed spinach had way too much garlic and the brussels sprouts was just too hard to bite into.
