Server seemed disconnected, reaching over people without excusing herself. Taking plates before we had finished our meal. It seemed that we were a bother.
I eat here 3-4 times per month and always enjoy the experience, this was a surprise. I was very disappointed.
Great service - server moved us from a small table to a larger table. She was terrific.
Food was fabulous as always. Portion size has decreased, a bit pricey for what you get. Tasty.
Overhead music is not what you expect for such an upscale dining experience. Loud and not conducive to atmosphere.

I come to Richmond 6 or 7 times a year and I go to the Hard Shell almost every time. I enjoy the oyster sampler and the seafood is always of very good quality. I have always had nice, friendly servers who really know the menu and have given me very good recommendations when I want to try something new. i'm sure that I will come back again on my next trip.
We took advantage of restaurant week to bring friends who were visiting the area. Being able to make a reservation was a plus, assuming this would be a busy Saturday night. Our waiter was friendly and attentive. There were really good options on the 3- course dinner menu.Two had the salmon, one the crab cakes and one the lobster tail. The crab soup was quite good. Overall, the food was good.
We had a table on the patio, early evening. Happy Hour is until 7 pm every day of the week so we started with some drinks and an appetizer. Our main courses included grilled mahi and lobster and filet, all of which were cooked beautifully and tasted wonderful. We ended with a sweet potato bread pudding which was enough for 2 people, and not too sweet. Our server was very attentive and we experienced a lovely evening.
We had a perfect waitress who was cheerful, helpful and smooth..a pro. My fried shrimp were fine. What good french fries! Salad ok. My husband’s fried oysters were different from what he had had before there. Much more breading and so-so flavor. Not served the usual way. Was the chef off that night? Not the usual standard we have come to expect. One of our party had the filet and said it was great.
Wonderful to have a restaurant like this without overwhelming noise so that conversation is possible! Next time my husband will have the filet!

Had absolutley no flavor at all, mash potatoes were terrible only thing good was salad i substituted for my brocolli and the bread and tea. My husbands was fair...he was disappointed in the lack of meat in the crab legs they were verg scrawny. Over all we decided it would be a while before we would return again. Server kept disapearing as well for refils on drinks and to bring check. We still tipped her well. Overall just really disappointed in everything...especially when it was our second time eating there and it was for a birthday celebration. Very sad 😞
The food was and well priced. The only downside was we had to ask for some hotter spinach after it was served at room temperature. The waitress brought it promptly and it did not detract form the meal. The crab cake appetizer, fried oysters, kale salad and salmon were superb.
We sat outside- pleasant and quieter. Food good- my lobster tail was very small. My husband and our friend's dinner was excellent... they ordered the same thing. Our waitress was excellent- very friendly. Our friend and her had a special connection with funny jokes and this was a good experience.j
With all of the fresh seafood available around Richmond, I would give this place a miss. Nothing is terrible--in fact the salmon was quite good. We went for she-crab soup which was average and for crab cakes which were lacking in good, sweet crab flavor. Service was absent-minded even though they were not busy.
We had never been to the Hard Shell before, but truly enjoyed our evening. We had a great waitress (Rachel) that helped us make our drink and appetizer selections. Everything was wonderful and my oysters were perfect and exactly what I wanted. My husband enjoyed his rockfish, and the complimentary dessert for our anniversary was pleasant surprise. We can't wait to go back!
My wife and I definitely enjoyed the food I had the Alaskan snow crab legs and they were absolutely delicious in my wife had crab cakes that were full of actual crab meat not too much filler and they were also very good. We also enjoyed the dessert everything was very tasty. Definitely be going again9
Over a two hour ordeal. Watched groups come in a half hour later than us and leave well before us. Server was nice and wanted to be helpful but not up to par. Tabling two cups of soup without utensils is bad enough but when you tell us you will be right back, forget, serve two other tables forcing us to get up and get our own utensils is a crime. Then you come back to our table 20 minutes later telling us you haven't forgotten is a felony. Just say you are sorry and move on. Don't lie. Still tipped 15% because there was no managerial oversight whatsoever in the dining room where the problem with this restaurant lies.
