The Happy Gnome Ratings and Reviews
We had brunch at the Happy Gnome on a Sunday and were happy to get in right away at 10am. We both had the Breakfast Sammie and were really impressed. To go with we loaded up seem Bloody Mary's from the table of goodies and had a fun time. There were 6 different bloody mary mixes to choose from and up-scaled meats/cheeses/olives etc. to add on. Would go again during the morning!
Great beer list with over 50 taps of craft beer. You can order beer flights of 5 if you want to tour the beer list. The food is comfort chic/high end bar fare. They do a great job of refreshing the menu pretty regularly, but keep some of the favorites year round. Check out the Game Burger or Duck Burger.
The happy gnome originally hit my radar due to the superb and expansive beer tap list, but more recently I have been coming back because of the food. It is above average certainly, and like their tap list, the food selection has a vast variety of delicious well-sized proportions. Everything is always good or better, no single element is ever less than that.
The back dining area has a lovely ambiance, and has a tolerable noise level on a busy night, the bar is gorgeous, and the large panoramic glass view of St Paul over a rare imported beer is really excellent.
Something you wouldn't expect to be great here and is, however, is their breakfasts. Some of the best in town. Reasonably priced and you can even eat them at the bar with your mimosa or bloody mary.
We had brunch on Sunday with some friends, and really enjoyed the amazing Bloody Mary bar! The food we ordered was visually appealing, smelled wonderful, and was really, really good!
We are already planning our next brunch with our friends at the Happy Gnome
Has been a favorite spot of mine for years. Sundays has a particularly intricate and expansive bloody mary bar. Menu changes and I've never had a dish I didn't join. Very expansive beer list that regularly changes. Hosts many events to try different beers/foods.
We live in the neighborhood, but keep the Happy Gnome for special occasions (not sure why).
The food is always great, the bar is cool, and the staff knows their stuff.
Our waitress made great recommendations, and the waiter clearing our dinner plates told us to try the creme brulee, which we certainly did.
No complaints or suggestions for improvements.
Heard about this place....came from Los Angeles to visit family for Christmas and the Happy Gnome does not disappoint! Left Bridge beer chocolate biscotti was released on Dec. 20th...we ate on the 21st and that beer was outstanding...chocolate done in a Belgian style. We will be back next time we are here!
Brussels sprouts with pork belly, risotto, and the elk-bison burger were amazing. We also treated ourselves to the creme brûlée.
Stroganoff was on the menu and we both ordered it. We needed a vegetable for balance and asked for and got a bowl of wonderful carrots cooked to perfection. Never had better carrots and our only mistake was not asking how they had been prepared. Simple but wonderful and the perfect side for the stroganoff. This is the best place to go if you're on your way to the Penumbra Theatre.
Hostess seated us right away even though we arrived about ten minutes prior to our reservation on a Saturday night. It was quite awhile after we were seated before we were greeted by the wait staff. Service was better after that. The food was excellent. We had the Duck Burger and BBQ Chicken sandwich. The beer selection is one of the highlights of this place. Lots of places have large beer selections but there are large number of beers here that you really do not find in other Twin Cities area restaurants and bars. Decent wine selections too. The bar area was still packed when let at a little after nine on a Saturday night.
The night my husband and I dined, Thursday night, was so loud we couldn't even hear each other without yelling. We had a drink and left. Our waitress was very nice and professional. I had dined once before and loved it. It was very unpleasant and very disappointing.
My friend and I met the day after Thanksgiving thinking it may be quiet. The place was bustling with people. I did make a reservation and grateful that I did. We both had the chicken tacos which were spicy and filling. The chicken appeared to be deep fried in a crunchy batter that was delicious. I would go back again and especially in better weather as the outdoor patio was very inviting!
