The Happy Gnome Ratings and Reviews
We live in the neighborhood, but keep the Happy Gnome for special occasions (not sure why).
The food is always great, the bar is cool, and the staff knows their stuff.
Our waitress made great recommendations, and the waiter clearing our dinner plates told us to try the creme brulee, which we certainly did.
No complaints or suggestions for improvements.
Heard about this place....came from Los Angeles to visit family for Christmas and the Happy Gnome does not disappoint! Left Bridge beer chocolate biscotti was released on Dec. 20th...we ate on the 21st and that beer was outstanding...chocolate done in a Belgian style. We will be back next time we are here!
Brussels sprouts with pork belly, risotto, and the elk-bison burger were amazing. We also treated ourselves to the creme brûlée.
Stroganoff was on the menu and we both ordered it. We needed a vegetable for balance and asked for and got a bowl of wonderful carrots cooked to perfection. Never had better carrots and our only mistake was not asking how they had been prepared. Simple but wonderful and the perfect side for the stroganoff. This is the best place to go if you're on your way to the Penumbra Theatre.
Hostess seated us right away even though we arrived about ten minutes prior to our reservation on a Saturday night. It was quite awhile after we were seated before we were greeted by the wait staff. Service was better after that. The food was excellent. We had the Duck Burger and BBQ Chicken sandwich. The beer selection is one of the highlights of this place. Lots of places have large beer selections but there are large number of beers here that you really do not find in other Twin Cities area restaurants and bars. Decent wine selections too. The bar area was still packed when let at a little after nine on a Saturday night.
The night my husband and I dined, Thursday night, was so loud we couldn't even hear each other without yelling. We had a drink and left. Our waitress was very nice and professional. I had dined once before and loved it. It was very unpleasant and very disappointing.
My friend and I met the day after Thanksgiving thinking it may be quiet. The place was bustling with people. I did make a reservation and grateful that I did. We both had the chicken tacos which were spicy and filling. The chicken appeared to be deep fried in a crunchy batter that was delicious. I would go back again and especially in better weather as the outdoor patio was very inviting!
Seating was immediate with reservation. Noise low enough to enable easy conversation. Wait staff prompt and very attentive. Food was outstanding in taste and arrival. Loved the Fig & Ginger Cocktail. Free dessert for birthday celebration. Would dine there again! !!
I would first like to say that this restaurant should not be attempting to serve higher-end entree's due to the simple fact that there is no separation at all from the very ruckus bar. To add to this problem it appears that the only bathrooms in this establishment is just off the middle of the "fine dining" area. This means that all the bar patrons have to walk through the dining area to get to the bathrooms. How is a couple supposed to enjoy a nice dinner with a good conversation when you have people from the bar coming and going through the dining area?Don't get me wrong I enjoy hanging out at the bar and having a few beers like a lot of people but I just don't think I would want to spend $ 30-35/plate on a meal in the middle of the bar. As far as the food, I'd have to say that my steak was not cooked per my request and the meat was very tough to cut with my steak knife. Also, both mine and my wife's (short ribs) meals were swimming in a very salt-rich sauce? Some sauce would be fine but what are they trying to cover up? I think this place would be fine if your looking to have some excellent beer (huge selection) with a tasty hamburger but definitely a poor choice for a moderately/high price meal and a good conversation. We did ask the hostess and the manager several times to be moved to a different table (we were right next to the bar) but we were told that someone already reserved the other tables? I never knew that a specific table could be reserved using OPEN TABLE but this was the answer I was given? I think perhaps a regular called to request the other table? Lastly, the manager did compensate us for our meals which we appreciated and felt he was very fair after we discussed our several complaints with him.
The food was very good as was the beer selection. The food choices were not extensive but what they offered was good. The place was loud due to Happy Hour in the bar. Parking was a challenge as the restaurant lot was full with Happy Hour patron and the neighborhood on street parking is taken by residents.
We were seated in the dining section - probably would not have like the busy and noisy bar area but we found The Happy Gnome to be a great St. Paul/Cathedral Hill find. We had excellent service - our waitress was very knowledgeable about both beer and food offerings menu. Very much enjoyed our first visit but it will not be our last.
I had a 5:45pm weeknight reservation for two. When the hostess sat me she made a point of telling me that the tables have been reserved again for use at 7pm. My friend and I made sure we cleared out by 7:05pm but I think that kind of matter can be subtly managed by an experienced server (clearing away the patrons items or presenting the bill and returning for payment). I didn't appreciate being told by the hostess that she expected me to leave in 1:15pm later, before I even sat down. It left me watching my clock throughout the meal.
