The Hamilton Ratings and Reviews
We were looking for a historic restaurant to take friends visiting from Italy and Australia and The Hamilton fit the bill perfectly. The Hamilton is part of the Clyde’s Restaurant Group, and it is very close to the White House. We were blown away with the stunning décor – high ceilings – Audubon bird theme throughout - lots of mahogany woodwork – art nouveau chandeliers - several bars – dining rooms – even private booths with doors. They also offer a live music area downstairs. We were there on Sunday, so we had the Brunch Menu to choose from – the prices were very reasonable. Tameeka, our server, was friendly and attentive. We were seated in the rear dining room and were surprised at how quiet it was for as large as the room was. We were able to have good conversations. We enjoyed Pecan Scones, Beef Chili, Salmon Chowder, Classic Eggs Benedict, Mezze Platter, Oyster Po Boy, and a Cheeseburger. The six of us were thrilled with our choices – the food was freshly prepared and beautifully presented. Reservations are a must here.
The food was excellent at the Hamilton and the waitress in the dining room downstairs was pretty good and fairly attentive. The calamari was probably the best I've ever tasted. Unfortunately, The Loft is another story. The band (Fast Eddie and the Slow Pokes) was outstanding but the service was terrible. The waitress was surly through the entire first set so we left in the middle of the second set. It ruined what could have been a very memorable evening.
The chicken wings were so good! They were crispy outside and tender inside. There were nine people in our party and everyone raved about their entree. We originally made the reservation for 6 and 9 people showed up. The restaurant accommodated us with seating in a quiet room. The ambiance was beautiful and I have not seen a bathroom that has little papers to open the door so that you don't have to touch a germ invested door immediately after you was your hands.
The Hamilton has become a cornerstone of my DC dining due to its comfort, quality, value and service. I've grown to know that when I dine at The Hamilton, I am going to be serviced by one of the most professional, friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive staffs in the city.
However on this particular night, our service was so poor that we left our table mid meal to finish at the bar after our waitress went missing for 40 minutes after taking our appetizer orders, which were delivered by a server. She only returned after she was alerted by another staff member that we had ordered drinks from the bar, due to lack of table service.
As usual the staff at the bar excellent, but this entire scenario was very disruptive to our dinner.
The Hamilton has a great location, wonderful ambiance and an excellent menu. Service is always top shelf, as is the food. I've had dinner there 4 times and on a couple of occasions just met friends for drinks at the bar. Each visit was completely satisfying.
Wanted chili and small side salad. Told that wasn’t possible, that I’d have to order a full salad. So I ordered a hamburger. Was told lettuce and pickle were extra and it came with no sides. At least the pre-meal bread was tasty! However , overall, felt the options were too constrained for a full-service restaurant.
Everything was great except for timing. Food was awesome, the service was great once it started. Unfortunately, it was 15 minutes + before a server came by and it was 20 minutes before we got anything on the table other than water.
Aside from the delay, everything was great.
Huge. Loud. Understaffed. Over-valued. Food is ok—neither great nor awful. HOWEVER, consider skipping the restaurant and heading to Hamilton Live—the downstairs live music venue with full bar, pizza, and handhelds. Their food is surprisingly good—especially the sushi. Or, consider The Loft upstairs—an intimate live music and bar spot. They are both fantastic.
The Hamilton has always been a place to welcome everyone and I know that will continue. The walls and ceiling made of wood gives it a feel of a mansion or chateau and the art work and paintings of wildlife elevates it to a place one could only hope to be invited to. The food continues to surpass most of the restaurants in the city and the sushi here may be the best in the city, I’ve lived here for 14 years. Consistency always comes to mind when I think of this restaurant and I hope it never changes. I’ve worked in hospitality my entire career and I award them the Golden Pineapple. Bravo!
Was in town with Les Miserables - the Hamilton hosted our opening night party in "the loft" - it was great and comfortable. Before departing town, I took my husband there for a private date night - LOVED the little side booth / dining rooms - it was intimate and cozy - the food was delicious - I would highly recommend the Hamlton and will certainly return the next time I'm in DC.
The service was mediocre, at best. The food was good, except for one dish (the acorn squash), in which one half of the squash wasn't cooked all the way and thus still "raw" and unable to be eaten. When we brought it up to the waiter, he said he would let the chef know, but never did anything else about it. There was no offer to have it re-made, and when the bill came there was no compensation for the partially cooked meal. When asked about the server simply said "sorry - if you come back some time i'll buy you a dessert" and then went on about his way.
While the location is convenient for downtown, the service is low-grade and food mediocre, especially for the price.
Everything was great except my Hamilton Burger was extremely undercooked. The manager made up for it by bringing me one to-go, but would’ve been nice to enjoy the meal with my girlfriend. Not my first time at The Hamilton though and it won’t be my last. Love the environment.
