Had friends in town with 2 small children and went for an early dinner. Everything was absolute perfection. Couldn’t have asked for a better meal (as always) or experience.
Innovative and interesting offerings, lovingly prepared and served. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We shared the seared broccoli, the farmer's market salad, the 16 oz ribeye, and the Ahi tuna. Interesting flavors, cooked to perfection (as needed!), and beautifully presented. The ribeye had a bit of gristle and the fat hadn't been trimmed, but the flavor was fabulous.
Will definitely visit, again.
Halloween dinner party was a blast! Food was fantastic!
Themed dinner (Halloween), exceptionally presented and fun!
The Best Halloween EVER!!!!
Whenever we want to have a peaceful eating experience with friends, we head for the Hairy Lobster. We can hear each other speak and are rarely interrupted by service staff as the drinks and plates are brought and removed. The food is amazing! Especially the gnocci with sausage and the broccoli. Although we rarely order dessert, we had the pumpkin offering the other night and it was delicious. We have recommended the Hairy Lobster to many friends and will continue to come ourselves.
Please change plates between dishes. Each dish is so delicious it shouldn't share the tastes of the last dish.
Everything was great - atmosphere, service and food. Will definitely come back and bring others.
The Hairy Lobster is a small plates restaurant with creative dishes and drinks. The Mac and cheese is a must try!! We had a large group so we were able to try most of the dishes and they were all very good. The pumpkin dessert was AWESOME!!
EVERY. SINGLE. DISH WAS AMAZING!!!!!! We had 10 items off the dinner menu and two deserts and all we great. Will be back!
Food is awesome as always! Servers are very very attentive, everyone very welcoming! Good place to bring guests and family.
Food quality very excellent and consistent. Always greeted warmly at the front desk. Parking is no problem. Definitely recommend "Hairy Lobster".
Great service and amazing food!
We like the Hairy Lobster for it's changing menu, creative kitchen, hearty portions and good cocktails. Do not let them sit you upstairs. On our last visit, the menu was very rich, overall--it was hard to put together a small-plates meal with a lighter start...but it was yummy! The waiter, despite our asking for help specifically on not over-ordering, let us order way too many heavy dishes. Portions are gigundo--we ordered 2 per person and rolled out of the place, Violet Beauregarde style. Good value, for sure. The kitchen and bar are great (though the bar is can get backed-up at peak, even for simple things like beer and wine)--but the service is the weak link. Our waiter was young, harried, and clearly delivering stressed-out service, albeit with a smile. With such a whimsical name, and a very eclectic "anything goes" menu (green papaya salad--old school Thai style--alongside pork belly and grits), I would have expected a more interactive server. The kitchen is not fast, but it is well-paced. In that situation, you want servers that set up the expectation of a leisurely meal, with ample attention, good wine and drinks while you wait--instead, we felt abandoned, water glasses and drink glasses empty. Kudos to the food runners for getting the food to the tables hot (or cold, as required), but they were often confused: half the dishes that we ordered ended up sent to other tables, and we had at least 2 dishes sent to our table that we did not order. Long story short: great kitchen, efficient (but confused) runners, great bar, middling table service. If you are patient, and forgiving of harried waitstaff, you will not be disappointed. Worth a try!
Service and food was amazing. Great place!
The only potentially "bad" thing is the shared plate format. It makes judging whether you've ordered enough food impossible. We basically ordered an entire extra entree. Still 5 stars across the board, because the next day leftovers were delicious, and ordering an extra plate isn't a big deal when it's so reasonably priced.
The food is phenomenal! My husband and I loved everything we tried and relied on our server for a lot of the suggestions. Our server and everyone else we encountered were very friendly, helpful and seriously acted like they lived their job and the restaurant. Fun atmosphere, airy high ceilings, comfortable setting. We were very surprised on our bill - with the amount we ordered and the quality of it all it was a lot less expensive than we expected. We can’t wait to go back and bring friends
What a wonderful dining experience we had there. The craft cocktails were imaginative and well prepared, the share-plates were fantastic, the entrees were as wonderful as everything else, and the service was spot on making it a truly enjoyable evening. Be sure and save room for desert as these are true works of art as well as a delight to the palate.
Very impressed with everything all the way around, the fries were excellent!
Amazing foodie spot. Owner was just a super nice guy to come say hi. We will be back, a lot.
It was out anniversary and they gave us a card and free cupcake which was nice.
Our server was amazing. Best part of the entire experience
The Hairy Lobster is by far the best restaurant in Portland. Every time I eat there I am amazed at how good everything taste. Some items on the menu when you read about them, you think, what? But then you try them and you can't believe how good it taste.
Seriously, the rainbow trout was AMAZING. I'll definitely be back my next time in Portland.
One of our tops in Oregon. A must experience!
Food ok but the menu differed from the website which rather spoilt things. Food choice very limited.
It was an enjoyable evening, i would not say great but enjoyable. Nothing really just stood out but all was really good.
This is our new favorite restaurant!
Excellent meal choices - above and beyond the ordinary. I liked the serving style (plate sharing) and the dining environment. Super wait staff!
Food quality has gone down over the last year. I used to be able to take my team here and love everything we ordered. Now, it is more hit or miss. The lobster was chewy and the steak was way undercooked and flavorless. The gnocchi was way too soft.
Overrated. Food was unimpressive and overpriced. Labeled as shared family-style big portions, but there was only regular sized portions. My $50 steak was bad and tasted like a $14 cheap steak from Denny’s. Don’t plan on returning.
Great food & service! My husband and I went there for my birthday and started with a Jungle Love cocktail then ordered Mushroom bisque, Main lobster, Pork belly and a ribeye that we couldn’t finish. We were seated upstairs and the ambience was nice, not too loud. We sat at a table between two other couples who were friendly enough to chitchat a bit. Our server informed us about the shared plates and how many to order just enough for the two of us....she was spot on! This was our first time, try it, you’ll like it! Can’t wait to go again!
We had an excellent time. Greated and entertained by the owner David who was genuinely nice and insightful. Food was amazing. We will plan to go back to The Hairy Lobster the next time we come to Portland.
This is still our go-to place for cozy dinner with out-of-town guests and celebrations! Chefs David and Melissa Root always deliver! Thanks for another pleasant evening!
Food was fabulous, service was great, server very informative
Fantastic meal and we can not wait to go back again! Too many great options to choose from, wish I could have tried them all. Service was spot on and very friendly.
The server was efficient food came in a timely manner. Food was exceptional.
Food was okay. Lobster over cooked. Most staff was nice but our waitress was visibly mad we complained about the lobster being over cooked. Super uncomfortable for us.
Went to the restaurant for a celebratory birthday dinner (as noted in the open table reservation). We requested outdoor seating, and upon arrival, the host asked to first double check our seating selection. We were eventually seated outside as requested, but quickly noticed that we were seated next to a rather boisterous and drunken large party. While the restaurant may not have been able to control the noise level of the drunken party, they did have control over the seating selection as there was other available outdoor seating on the patio away from the rowdy table.
The food was good as expected from the reviews, and our server was great. The ambience and noise level were poor, as the host chose to sit us next to the rowdy drunken table. The birthday note in the reservation went completely unnoticed.
Good food, but would not recommend for a special occasion.
The meal was fantastic. I took a friend and they very much enjoyed the food as well and asked how the chef is able to consistently come up with such interesting and tasty food. Always a great experience.
