Tasty share plates and good service. We will be back.
We ordered 7 different dishes. 2 were good, and 5 were excellent. The service was very informative and attentive, and the deserts were wonderful. All the staff was very pleasant and friendly, and our server was terrific.
My only and biggest disappointment was the prices and quality and size of the drinks, including the coffees and espresso. Most of the cocktails were small and underwhelming, and were quite expensive for what we got, even the wine pour by the glass was about 1/2 of what you would expect.
Yes I will return, but I will inquire in more detail on the beverage service...
Sat up at the chef’s counter and had an amazing meal. Flavor filled and properly prepared food... I can not really ask for more then that. Service was friendly and efficient. I enjoyed my experience immensely.
We had reservations for the Thanksgiving meal. The food was extraordinary. This place is obviously top notch Top to bottom.
Thanksgiving dinner was amazing! The food was so delicious and the service was spot on.
This is our second Thanksgiving at The Hairy Lobster - it is quite simply the BEST meal we’ve ever had. We drive down from SEATTLE and will do so every year! Thanks to chefs and staff for making our holiday delicious! See you next year!
Thanksgiving Dinner was excellent!
Not for special meals. Thanksgiving dinner was okay and service was unfriendly.
It was Thanksgiving Day; a prix fixe meal that was substantial and pretty delicious! The ambiance was nice (candlelight on the table would have been sweet); we were seated upstairs with a view of the kitchen which was pretty entertaining to watch. The kitchen was very organized considering the day. You could order additional items off the menu and we did see prime rib going out to tables in addition to the traditional prix fixe items. Service started out slow but then it all started to come together. I would definitely go back for another meal that’s not on a holiday.
Food and staff were excellent especially for a holiday. Loved the ambience and the whole feel of the restaurant. Also loved the china. I don't know if they did that for the holiday or that is their normal dinner ware. It was eclectic old fashioned china..like my grandmothers..loved it!! Only critiques was that we asked for extra rolls - so that would be two and they charged us for them..oh well otherwise a wonderful experience
Loved the “family style”
Made a great thanksgiving
Definitely headed back
Excellent Thanksgiving meal. The meal was served family style. My husband took more and I took less, so it worked out perfectly. We'll be back.
We love the hairy lobster and the chefs tasting menu. However, this time around the options weren’t as great as usual and many more vegetarian options which we weren’t thrilled about. Service was outstanding though!
Our second time there and fortunate to meet the owners David and Melissa on our first visit. David came to our table to say Hi. How often do you get owners that take the time to make sure your happy. Our group loved every plate. Great service, great food, great atmosphere. Our favorite place in Portland.
16 year Anniversary dinner was
Fantastic! Great food and service was on point.
What a fabulous restaurant!!! Took my wife here for her birthday and couldn’t have had a better time. Wasn’t too sure about a “sharing” format but will never hesitate again. Each portion was small but reasonably priced and very rich. We each had two drinks and shared 3 courses plus an order of Parker House rolls. Left full and happy! The service was top notch. Highly recommended!!!
We got too hungry before our Saturday night reservation time but the hosts were so accommodating to seat us an hour early. We had a large group and the "shared plates" were the perfect fit for us. Our server was attentive and guided us on how much to order, although we probably had one or two more than we should have ordered. The chicken friend shrimp was by far our favorite dish. The rib eye was cooked perfectly and full of flavor. The jerk lobster with kale was another hit with people in our group that never eat vegetables going back for second on the kale... We weren't all as excited about the verde mac and cheese but I still thought it was good. Save room for ice cream.
Amazing! their food is always incredible savory and delicious. you really don't want to stop! this was my second time going there, and i can't wait to go back again!
We had eaten here before at a large dinner. It was just two of us this time. Both evenings were amazing. The food is excellent. The small plates to share makes dinner a lot of fun. We've been hitting different Portland restaurants every week. The Hairy Lobster is in the top five for sure. It was so good, I'm taking the time to write this review.
Wonderful menu variety and fantastic food. You could tell the quality of food was superb. We loved the ambiance and the service was great. We will definitely be back!
Had friends in town with 2 small children and went for an early dinner. Everything was absolute perfection. Couldn’t have asked for a better meal (as always) or experience.
Innovative and interesting offerings, lovingly prepared and served. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We shared the seared broccoli, the farmer's market salad, the 16 oz ribeye, and the Ahi tuna. Interesting flavors, cooked to perfection (as needed!), and beautifully presented. The ribeye had a bit of gristle and the fat hadn't been trimmed, but the flavor was fabulous.
Will definitely visit, again.
Halloween dinner party was a blast! Food was fantastic!
Themed dinner (Halloween), exceptionally presented and fun!
The Best Halloween EVER!!!!
Whenever we want to have a peaceful eating experience with friends, we head for the Hairy Lobster. We can hear each other speak and are rarely interrupted by service staff as the drinks and plates are brought and removed. The food is amazing! Especially the gnocci with sausage and the broccoli. Although we rarely order dessert, we had the pumpkin offering the other night and it was delicious. We have recommended the Hairy Lobster to many friends and will continue to come ourselves.
Please change plates between dishes. Each dish is so delicious it shouldn't share the tastes of the last dish.
Everything was great - atmosphere, service and food. Will definitely come back and bring others.
The Hairy Lobster is a small plates restaurant with creative dishes and drinks. The Mac and cheese is a must try!! We had a large group so we were able to try most of the dishes and they were all very good. The pumpkin dessert was AWESOME!!
EVERY. SINGLE. DISH WAS AMAZING!!!!!! We had 10 items off the dinner menu and two deserts and all we great. Will be back!
Food is awesome as always! Servers are very very attentive, everyone very welcoming! Good place to bring guests and family.
Food quality very excellent and consistent. Always greeted warmly at the front desk. Parking is no problem. Definitely recommend "Hairy Lobster".
Great service and amazing food!
We like the Hairy Lobster for it's changing menu, creative kitchen, hearty portions and good cocktails. Do not let them sit you upstairs. On our last visit, the menu was very rich, overall--it was hard to put together a small-plates meal with a lighter start...but it was yummy! The waiter, despite our asking for help specifically on not over-ordering, let us order way too many heavy dishes. Portions are gigundo--we ordered 2 per person and rolled out of the place, Violet Beauregarde style. Good value, for sure. The kitchen and bar are great (though the bar is can get backed-up at peak, even for simple things like beer and wine)--but the service is the weak link. Our waiter was young, harried, and clearly delivering stressed-out service, albeit with a smile. With such a whimsical name, and a very eclectic "anything goes" menu (green papaya salad--old school Thai style--alongside pork belly and grits), I would have expected a more interactive server. The kitchen is not fast, but it is well-paced. In that situation, you want servers that set up the expectation of a leisurely meal, with ample attention, good wine and drinks while you wait--instead, we felt abandoned, water glasses and drink glasses empty. Kudos to the food runners for getting the food to the tables hot (or cold, as required), but they were often confused: half the dishes that we ordered ended up sent to other tables, and we had at least 2 dishes sent to our table that we did not order. Long story short: great kitchen, efficient (but confused) runners, great bar, middling table service. If you are patient, and forgiving of harried waitstaff, you will not be disappointed. Worth a try!
Service and food was amazing. Great place!
The only potentially "bad" thing is the shared plate format. It makes judging whether you've ordered enough food impossible. We basically ordered an entire extra entree. Still 5 stars across the board, because the next day leftovers were delicious, and ordering an extra plate isn't a big deal when it's so reasonably priced.
The food is phenomenal! My husband and I loved everything we tried and relied on our server for a lot of the suggestions. Our server and everyone else we encountered were very friendly, helpful and seriously acted like they lived their job and the restaurant. Fun atmosphere, airy high ceilings, comfortable setting. We were very surprised on our bill - with the amount we ordered and the quality of it all it was a lot less expensive than we expected. We can’t wait to go back and bring friends
What a wonderful dining experience we had there. The craft cocktails were imaginative and well prepared, the share-plates were fantastic, the entrees were as wonderful as everything else, and the service was spot on making it a truly enjoyable evening. Be sure and save room for desert as these are true works of art as well as a delight to the palate.
Very impressed with everything all the way around, the fries were excellent!
Amazing foodie spot. Owner was just a super nice guy to come say hi. We will be back, a lot.
