The Hairy Lobster
Seriously, the rainbow trout was AMAZING. I'll definitely be back my next time in Portland.
One of our tops in Oregon. A must experience!
Food ok but the menu differed from the website which rather spoilt things. Food choice very limited.
It was an enjoyable evening, i would not say great but enjoyable. Nothing really just stood out but all was really good.
This is our new favorite restaurant!
Excellent meal choices - above and beyond the ordinary. I liked the serving style (plate sharing) and the dining environment. Super wait staff!
Food quality has gone down over the last year. I used to be able to take my team here and love everything we ordered. Now, it is more hit or miss. The lobster was chewy and the steak was way undercooked and flavorless. The gnocchi was way too soft.
Overrated. Food was unimpressive and overpriced. Labeled as shared family-style big portions, but there was only regular sized portions. My $50 steak was bad and tasted like a $14 cheap steak from Denny’s. Don’t plan on returning.
Great food & service! My husband and I went there for my birthday and started with a Jungle Love cocktail then ordered Mushroom bisque, Main lobster, Pork belly and a ribeye that we couldn’t finish. We were seated upstairs and the ambience was nice, not too loud. We sat at a table between two other couples who were friendly enough to chitchat a bit. Our server informed us about the shared plates and how many to order just enough for the two of us....she was spot on! This was our first time, try it, you’ll like it! Can’t wait to go again!
We had an excellent time. Greated and entertained by the owner David who was genuinely nice and insightful. Food was amazing. We will plan to go back to The Hairy Lobster the next time we come to Portland.
This is still our go-to place for cozy dinner with out-of-town guests and celebrations! Chefs David and Melissa Root always deliver! Thanks for another pleasant evening!
Food was fabulous, service was great, server very informative
Fantastic meal and we can not wait to go back again! Too many great options to choose from, wish I could have tried them all. Service was spot on and very friendly.
The server was efficient food came in a timely manner. Food was exceptional.
Food was okay. Lobster over cooked. Most staff was nice but our waitress was visibly mad we complained about the lobster being over cooked. Super uncomfortable for us.
Went to the restaurant for a celebratory birthday dinner (as noted in the open table reservation). We requested outdoor seating, and upon arrival, the host asked to first double check our seating selection. We were eventually seated outside as requested, but quickly noticed that we were seated next to a rather boisterous and drunken large party. While the restaurant may not have been able to control the noise level of the drunken party, they did have control over the seating selection as there was other available outdoor seating on the patio away from the rowdy table.
The food was good as expected from the reviews, and our server was great. The ambience and noise level were poor, as the host chose to sit us next to the rowdy drunken table. The birthday note in the reservation went completely unnoticed.
Good food, but would not recommend for a special occasion.
The meal was fantastic. I took a friend and they very much enjoyed the food as well and asked how the chef is able to consistently come up with such interesting and tasty food. Always a great experience.
This is my go-to place when entertaining out of town guests. I’ve been here about 5 times now and each time is a gift. There is absolutely nothing I could find as a fault with this place. The environment is the best combination of casual and upscale. The environment is large enough to hold the popularity (I’d still recommend a reservation on weekends) but you’re not sitting in your neighbors lap while eating. The dining is family style but the portions are actually large enough to get away with getting 1-2 dishes a person. Speaking of the food, WOW! I don’t think I’ve ever tried a dish I didn’t like here. The food is also served in these cute old style dish sets. The service has always been attentive and kind. Save room for dessert, it’s prepared by some famous pastry chef and they do not disappoint.
Food and service was outstanding, one of the best dining experiences I have ever had.
Nice setting on Jamison Park. The food was delicious except for the heirloom tomatoes with smoked eggplant - eggplant was too overpowering
This meal was probably the best we have ever had at The Hairy Lobster
What a hidden treasure of a restaurant. This is my first review ever, and I must say, my wife and I loved the entire experience. We have dined all over Portland and put The Hairy Lobster at the top of our list and look forward to becoming a frequent dinner... The waiter, staff, chefs, and everyone that works there are the best!
From the craft cocktails to the savory dishes and desserts, a one of a kind experience. We
sat at the bar, conversing with the engaging bartenders (masters of mixology, really), being served one amazing dish after another. Husband and wife team in the kitchen, he savory, she sweet, battling it out for culinary supremacy. Happy hour pricing was icing on the cake. The fried chicken, swordfish and the cobbler with whipped rum topping were amazing.
Amazing meal, one of the highlights of visiting Portland!
Great as always!
Great first experience. Minimally designed and spacious. Immediately greeted at the door and seated comfortably by one of many massive window. Our knowledgeable server explained the menu and about how much to order. The food came out delicious and spaced perfectly (Wednesday night). Would return despite the Portland Weird name because what’s in a name?
Just a gem of a small plate experience. Loved this place.
A true dining experience.
We had a fabulous evening at The Hairy Lobster! The food was amazing as was the service. Highly recommend it.
All of the food dishes were amazing- every one was excellent. Our waiter was super nice and professional he just seemed to have way too many tables. The bar was way backed up and slow. It took us 20-30 minutes for our drinks to be delivered, once they were totally forgotten, several times we had to remind our waiter we ordered drinks. We had dirty plates on the table throughout the night. Once clean plates were brought but dirty, empty places weren’t picked up. The food was so excellent we want to come back. But the service and bar were so poor we’re not sure. I hope you can figure out the service side because the food was some of the best we’ve had. Good luck.
Entire experience was wonderful! Food, drinks and dessert were thoughtful and stellar. Service was a breath of fresh air in this lacking town. We loved the atmosphere. It was elegant and relaxed/ whimsy all at once. You can feel the effort and warmth that goes in to running a restaurant like this. Looking forward to our next visit!
This place is for people who not interested in food, but want to spend an evening in fancy looking restaurant and pay a lot for so called "small plates".
After roaring success of Mediterranean Exploration Company and Bar Casa Vale we suddenly started to have more and more restaurants which serve small plates only. Unfortunately Hairy Lobster doesn't offer high quality and great test, we tried 3 of their small plates and neither was good.
1. Cheese board. On the menu it is called barnyard cheese board, however cheeses were not fragrant at all and the selection was not good either: very generic brie, some plane blue cheese and some simple hard cheese; nothing spectacular. In addition instead of board, we got a medium size bowl decorated with flowers. Cheeses usually served on board for a reason: patrons want to see each item clearly and not to mix them all together like salad.
2. Variation on poke: not the best quality ahi tuna, and tasted sweet.
3. Variation on pork belly: the meat was tender, but it was covered by very thick layer of sweet plum based souse and garnished with orange wedges. The original taste was totally hidden.
Bottom line: I'll not recommend this place for people who love and understand good food.
Three of us sat outside and had a lovely dinner with a great assortment of food. Server was excellent. Only disappointment was the size of the Parker House rolls. Would have liked more bread to soak up all the great sauces.
We splurged on the $65 per person (we had a table of 8) and I can’t even count how many different plates we had but each one was amazing, and the staff was amazing.
We all arrived on time; greeted immediately & menu explained and suggestions made. We all loved it and will go again. Drink at bar we’re just so so.
Probably our favorite place in the Pearl! Food is always awesome as well as the service. Love that there are new offerings as well as some standard go-tos.
We always enjoy the meals that are always excellent and interesting.
For me personally, this is hands down one of the best restaurants in Portland. Just had my second visit. Every dish was masterfully executed. My wife is gluten and diary free. They were great with accommodating her. The desserts were absolutely incredible. Can’t recommend The Hairy Lobster enough.
All was perfect, delicious and accommodating to allergies.
