The Hairy Lobster
Great food excellent service
Trendy spot and tried it for Portland Dining Month. Delicious craft cocktails and shrimp appetizer and chopped salad was very good. Halibut fish and chips was fair, came not very hot and breading was soggy. Had to ask waiter for a fork and dishes were not cleared between courses. Waiter was not very personable and didn’t provide very good service.
The desserts here are always something special. Summertime on the patio. I am never disappointed when I visit The Hairy Lobster.
The hairy lobster may be our favorite restaurant in Portland. Incredible food, friendly service, and comfortable atmosphere. The head chef even comes out to talk to you about your dinner! Highly recommend to anyone.
Food was different and excellent. Nice vibe. Loved the old fashioned dinnerware.
My friends and I were looking for reservations the night of an event at the Moda Center and I read the reviews on this place and looked into the menu. We decided to give it a try and so glad we did. I think it is now my favorite restaurant for dinner in Portland. The environment is light and open and the service is unbeatable. Everything was so timely and the food was incomparable. Their dishes are unique and beautiful but also flavorful and satisfying. Doing dinner tapas style and sharing all the plates was the best way to go. We got 7 dishes and loved them all equally. Now about desert, this place does it very well. The bread pudding was outstanding. Can’t wait to go back.
Great. A little spendy but delicious. Awesome location. Good service. I will return
Phenomenal! Attention to detail and allergies specifically were very much appreciated, can’t express how important it is to feel okay about my friends allergy. The foo was out of this world, a party for the tastes buds that takes you on a journey. When you return from that flavor party you kick the normal world in the face!! Absolutely amazing thank you all.
The food was mediocre. The hanger steak was almost raw and sauced with something sweet; scallops were far too salty, charred broccoli was good but the mustard sauce was gooey and there was far too much of it. Everything was just off. But the main problem was the noise. We were seated at a counter (by choice since the tables were full accent to Open Table, but that turned out not to be true-many open tables when we were there.) all of a sudden there was a woman in a microphone above us, calling out an auction or bingo or something, with loud yelling and racecourse laughter. There was apparently a private event happening right above us and it was deafening. We ended up getting out of there as fast as we could, skipping dessert (and we were there for a birthday dinner.) very very unpleasant experience in an underwhelming restaurant. Good wine list though. And good service.
we brought drinks from the bar and our server was minimally helpful and in a rush. We had the dine Portland menu, Bay shrimps in a spicy sauce as a first course, we had only eaten half when the sever brought my wife's fish and chips saying the kitchen thought we were ready. I could not even see the kitchen! Fifteen minutes later my gnocchi came. It was delicious. The restaurant was emptying yet the server was hovering the after we were finished it took ten minutes to get the bill. Unacceptable!!
We came in for the first time via Portland Dining Month. We both had the shrimp appetizer that was just ok. The gnocchi was good but the fish in the fish and chips meal was greasy and flavorless.
The meal didn't have continuity and felt like nothing special.
Another amazing dinner at The Hairy Lobster. A new dish for me tonight and it was delicious as always.
I have to admit I was put off by the name but the food was delicious, particularly the delicious lemon tart that was beautifully garnished
Great food, the chef’s menu for groups of 8 or more is great , no thinking just great food!!
We’ve been wanting to try this place for a while and it did not disappoint! Went during PDX dining month but there were so many great dishes on the regular menu, we didn’t want to miss out! Here’s our order (don’t judge, it was a lot haha): the rolls- amazing and super buttery, whipped lavender butter added just a little sweetness; shishitos- blistered perfection, with finely shredded parm; broccoli- the sauce was interesting, but overall nothing too exciting (really just big broccoli steaks), on the fence if I would order again; the scallops (my favorite!)- light curry sauce on top of rice and nicely paired with fresh cucumber salad; hanger steak- rather small portion of meat but it also comes with salad and decadent twice baked potato. Come hungry— between two of us and our order, we were absolutely stuffed. Came to celebrate hubs bday and the only let down (but can you really say that when something is free? I don’t think so) was the bday chocolate cupcake. Apparently, HL is known for their desserts, so next time we will order one (or two) fewer plates and try a dessert or two. Can’t wait to come again! Highly recommend! Great for date night or dinner with friends and fam- they have an awesome bar area for drinks and bites too!
We attended for Portland Dining month and enjoyed the 3 course meal. The drinks, food and service was all very enjoyable!
best scallops i've ever had!! great green curry. loved the aperol/tequila drink too. amazing service
The food was good quality and well prepared, but very small portions for the price. Very little on the menu interested me. Not a lot of creativity with accompaniments. Potatoes were the main option. The seating in the bar area wasn't very comfortable.
One of the best meals in Portland, hands down. The fish and chips plus the scallops dish were outstanding.
Our waiter was an annoying rookie; gushed too much and was concerned over the wrong things. She’ll learn in time.
Sat by the fire. All dishes were excellent. We had the lobster cooked perfect, brisket macn cheese delicious, scallops were amazing and rolls are a must. The dessert toffee pudding was not sharable. (Oink)
Great tasting food. Attentive service. Can't wait to go back
Some of the best dishes served in the city. The chefs create excellent flavor combinations that are executed by a professional kitchen. This is particularly true for dessert. As important, the service is always friendly and top notch.
Every aspect was fabulous from tasty food, great wine, and awesome service. Table by the fireplace was the topper on a stormy night.
The Hairy Lobster may be the best restaurant in PDX. I like others, but usually I come away thinking, I could have gone to THL instead. THLobster is consistently wonderful. They don't seem to have "off nights" like most places. The menu is innovative and well balanced, the cocktails are wonderful, the wine list, while small, is well represented and the house wines are quite good. And the desserts, well, AMAZING! isn't strong enough a description.
Beautiful place, ambience outstanding and delightful food...we will be back
Had dinner on 3/2/2019 and loved it. Mixed drinks are a little pricey, but very good, and they don’t skimp on the booze. Had the Mac n cheese and rolls which I highly recommend.
Great food. Excellent service.
Food was great and the Portland Duning Month menu was a super value. Wish we had listened to the wait staff and ordered one dining month menu (fish & chips were fabulous) and then one other protein dish. Wines by the bottle were best. The three tastes were not in our taste profile.
Once again, this was an exceptional experience! Our server, Amy, was attentive and responsive— when informed that a member of our party was vegan, she declared that she would work with the kitchen to find great foods. We were so delighted! We confess to being compelled to try the vegan choices in addition to the fabulous on-menu choices we requested. Yum!
You will be so happy you, too, will have chosen The Hairy Lobster for your special occasion or anytime you want a happy dining experience!
Be sure to congratulate Chefs Melissa and David for their great servers, chefs and other wonderful staff. Chefs Root have succeeded in delivering what we needed in dining in the Pearl.
Wonderful selection of shareable plates. Drinks are a good size. Wine by the glass prices seemed high. Three plates were plenty for two people. Fun place to try.
Wonderful service and food. Definitely will be back. Add the rolls to your meal no matter what you do!
Everything was perfection. Beautiful
Comfortable decor. The food is simply amazing !
Mushroom bisque ,Parker house rolls , The acorn squash , and the short ribs with spaetzle are a few standouts ! Dessert is a must here ,as well , incredibly delicious and beautifully presented!
Our favorite restaurant in Portland !
We loved our food choices: seasonal chopped salad, oysters and pork belly as well as diver scallops in curry. Dessert was toffee crunch pudding. Definitely worth it.
We were thrilled with our visit. We sat at the Chef’s counter bar area where we watched the chefs prepare all the food. Our food was delicious. We had the whole trout and hanger steak. Both cooked perfectly. We also had the sticky toffee pudding, amazing!
Our waiter Edward is always a delight, I've had him as a server a few times as my waiter and he's outstanding, professional, sweet and funny. The food and cocktails are always delicious, my date and I both really enjoyed ourselves.
My woman and I came for dinner before we went to a show at the Schnitz. We got to the restaurant at open and sat at the kitchen bar seats. We had one of our favorite meals in Portland, the best since Longbaan.
Every plate was really good; the rolls were great, the cheese board was well put together, the charred broccoli with duck egg was just amazing, hanger steak over potato gratin was hearty and great, pork rib tip mac n' cheese was just that good.
Our server was there when he needed to be and not there when he shouldn't. My old fashioned was done well, the chef was friendly and polite, the sous chef was funny and we had great convo.
We will be back
Every time we go to The Hairy Lobster, we are delighted with the food. We shared the wonderful chopped salad and the perfectly-cooked green beans with hazelnuts (3 people), and then ordered the short ribs, the salmon and the chicken dishes, all of which were absolutely delicious and imaginative.
For dessert, we shared the Sticky Toffee Pudding, which was scrumptious.... after such a lovely dinner, it provided the perfect touch of sweetness to complete the meal.
We also had a fabulous Thanksgiving dinner at THL and hope they will celebrate that holiday again next year.
Awesome meal, great service, husband and wife owners came to our table and had a nice conversation.
Really delicious dishes. Nice portions to share with your friends or family.
