The Grove Ratings and Reviews
The location is in a bustling part of downtown so before or after dinner we could walk somewhere interesting. We were seated promptly. During dinner we were surrounded by windows. Three of our party had a salad with corn and avacado that we all thought was fantastic. The noise level was good for a group of six, neither too quiet so it felt too serious, nor too loud so we couldn't hear each other talk. Overall it was a good choice for a festive dinner.
What was once a great spot for brunch had dwindled to a mere shadow of itself.
Mango Mimosa advertised but not s mango in the building.
Dry dessert cake that begged for whipped cream and additional sources of moisture.
A waiter that was SCARED to tell my fiancé that the restaurant was out of an item.
A bar tax on the drink that we were comped when the mimosa situation turned bad.
Valet service that needs to be more careful in the tight quarters they work in
Headaches from it all.
I was really pleased with this restaurant and would definitely go back. I was in town for a meeting at the Marriot Marquis and tried to find restaurants within walking distance and that ideally had some vegan options. The Grove even had a vegan dessert (beyond just sorbet) that was really good. Was a little worried as my guests were all local to Houston so did not want to pick a restaurant that (unbeknownst to me) would have some unfavorable reputation but they seemed pleased and none had been there before.
Enjoyed a good meal with my spouse two nights ago. Very close to our hotel, and a pretty view with the trees outdoors decorated with lights. Attentive service, good wine list. The corn and avocado salad was great, and the rest of the meal did not disappoint. I wasn't planning on having dessert, but was glad I succumbed when the banana pudding tiramisu arrived.
It was just okay.
The service was not stellar nor was it memorable. The waiter had no interest in customer service he only came alive when he presented the check (like that was going to affect his tip). The food was not horrible but I've certainly had better; it was not so original like they'd like to think. I had the steak tartar and I was not impressed. There was barely any meat on a thick piece of toast with lots of horseradish sauce. Perhaps that was the "american" version of steak tartar but it certainly was not impressive. The restaurant is lovely in atmosphere and very well situated near GRB and downtown, however not enough for me to return.
Atmosphere was great as always. They made a special request cocktail with ease. Waitress forgot to submit our dinner order so we didn't get our meal until an hour after we ordered. They did provide an comp'd app to hold us over. Food was great. Waitress never took responsibility and didn't apologize for her error. Manager did come by and apologize and also comp'd a dessert. I'd go back but would hope for a different wait person...
We Had brunch on Sunday. They offered 3 courses for $20. The Caesar salad was delicious as were the two entrees we ordered. We ended with the Meyer lemon pound cake. The waiter was very attentive, the food arrived in a timely manner and the ambience was pleasant.
I'm a big fan of The Grove however our recent experience in the food quality area was bizarrely poor. The bread appetizer was burned and when I say burned burned so bad it shouldn't have been sent out of the kitchen. The chicken breast overcooked and dry. The short rib was cold and tasted like a plane roast. All of this after waiting 30 minutes for two simple dishes at 5 when the restaurant really wasn't busy. For the restaurant and the price this was a very poor experience.
Waited at our table for 25 minutes before we finally got a waitress to stop. She said it was not her table but she would take our drink orders. Another 20 minutes passed and my husband went to the manager. He was irritated that we were irritated! Our drinks and water came. The waitress was apologetic and nice. She accidentally knocked a full glass of water in my lap. She ran to the kitchen. The manager never came to our table until, at the end of the meal, he delivered our already free (because we were celebrating a birthday), dessert and said, "thank you for your patience". Unbelievable that this beautifully located restaurant is so poorly managed.
Great ambiance , beautiful view to the park. My husband and I enjoyed a nice evening. Our waiter was really nice and made it very special for us as it was our anniversary. Although I could not order the dish I wanted GULF FISH IN PARCHMENT, they were out of it, also I expect bread basket before dinner, I don't know if, you have to order? we did not have any. Overall we liked we'll be back.
