The Grove Ratings and Reviews
It was just okay.
The service was not stellar nor was it memorable. The waiter had no interest in customer service he only came alive when he presented the check (like that was going to affect his tip). The food was not horrible but I've certainly had better; it was not so original like they'd like to think. I had the steak tartar and I was not impressed. There was barely any meat on a thick piece of toast with lots of horseradish sauce. Perhaps that was the "american" version of steak tartar but it certainly was not impressive. The restaurant is lovely in atmosphere and very well situated near GRB and downtown, however not enough for me to return.
Atmosphere was great as always. They made a special request cocktail with ease. Waitress forgot to submit our dinner order so we didn't get our meal until an hour after we ordered. They did provide an comp'd app to hold us over. Food was great. Waitress never took responsibility and didn't apologize for her error. Manager did come by and apologize and also comp'd a dessert. I'd go back but would hope for a different wait person...
We Had brunch on Sunday. They offered 3 courses for $20. The Caesar salad was delicious as were the two entrees we ordered. We ended with the Meyer lemon pound cake. The waiter was very attentive, the food arrived in a timely manner and the ambience was pleasant.
I'm a big fan of The Grove however our recent experience in the food quality area was bizarrely poor. The bread appetizer was burned and when I say burned burned so bad it shouldn't have been sent out of the kitchen. The chicken breast overcooked and dry. The short rib was cold and tasted like a plane roast. All of this after waiting 30 minutes for two simple dishes at 5 when the restaurant really wasn't busy. For the restaurant and the price this was a very poor experience.
Waited at our table for 25 minutes before we finally got a waitress to stop. She said it was not her table but she would take our drink orders. Another 20 minutes passed and my husband went to the manager. He was irritated that we were irritated! Our drinks and water came. The waitress was apologetic and nice. She accidentally knocked a full glass of water in my lap. She ran to the kitchen. The manager never came to our table until, at the end of the meal, he delivered our already free (because we were celebrating a birthday), dessert and said, "thank you for your patience". Unbelievable that this beautifully located restaurant is so poorly managed.
Great ambiance , beautiful view to the park. My husband and I enjoyed a nice evening. Our waiter was really nice and made it very special for us as it was our anniversary. Although I could not order the dish I wanted GULF FISH IN PARCHMENT, they were out of it, also I expect bread basket before dinner, I don't know if, you have to order? we did not have any. Overall we liked we'll be back.
The view is lovely. But the noise is too much for an intimate conversation. The food was fine, though not outstanding. This place is great for our-if-town guests with corporate wallets, but not so attractive for locals looking for a night out together with delicious food.
My wife and I enjoyed a nice Saturday evening at The Grove. It was our third time to eat there and the setting was wonderful as usual. There were several parties, a couple of families with children, several groups and couples that were dining while we were there. The noise level was tolerable, better than the last time we were there. We started with the Ahi Tuna Aguachile, a delicious starter to split. Next we had the Agave Beets, very tasty with fennel and goat cheese. For our entree, we split the Black Drum on the Half Shell. The fish was tasty although very difficult to eat. The half shell was the skin and scales of the fish, which did not separate easily. The veggies that accompanied the meal were overly smokey, to the point of inedible. The best part of the meal was a scoop of fig and honey tres leches gelato, a must try!
Overall, the meal was very good and we had a great evening. We will return and opt for a different entree on our next visit.
We visited the Grove for my son's 10th birthday dinner on a Monday night. Although we were the only family with small children the restaurant ambiance was perfect for school aged children (high ceilings and energetic noise). As a heads up, there was street parking outside the restaurant which was not available because discovery green is nearby and we were in a hurry so valet was the only option to arrive on time. We liked the restaurant and would recommend this restaurant for special occasions or for business dinners/lunches.
Food and service were wonderful. My husband had the burger (off menu but available) and loved it. My sister and I had dinner off of the HRW menu. Great variety and the food was excellent. Waiter was very helpful in explaining I got menu options. Love the view of the park.
My wife, a group of her work friends and I all went to the Grove for a birthday brunch. It was our first time here and we capitalized on the Houston Restaurant Week menus. This space itself is very neat and in a great location. There is a lot of parking around Discovery Green surprisingly as well as plenty of valets at neighboring hotels. We used the valet there at The Grove. Between our entire group, we sampled everything on their HRW brunch menu. Our favorites were the corn salad, the croque madame, and all of the pound cakes were very good. Also, the "bottomless" mimosas were an outstanding value. Make sure your get them, because the rest of the cocktails were not worth it.
