The Grilled Oyster Company
My go to place for great food and ambiance where you get attentive service and can have nice conversation over a tasteful meal. Love it.
Very relaxed dining experience. My shrimp tacos were outstanding as was the Brussel sprouts starter. Service was slow but it was Mother’s Day.
Great food. Good service. When very busy noise level is pretty high...not the best accoustics. If this bothers you avoid weekend evenings. Overall, though, one of the better dining experiences in suburban Maryland.
the mini ahi tuna tacos needed some acid, they were very bland! the raw tuna was warm, I am not sure that is not how it should be served. one oyster was bad and that made it difficult to finish the rest without smelling each oyster. We were offered a replacement but we refused. The crab cake dinner was very good and the mussel and clam dish was tasty. I haven't been there in a while and I have always fount the food to be inconsistent.
The food wa
We had been regulars at the GOC for years, but hadn't been there for a while. We arrived Saturday night at 8 for my wife's birthday. There was no one at the bar and the place was half empty. They no longer give you the veggies and dip prior to the dinner. I ordered a bottle of wine - sorry we are out of that one. I ordered another bottle, same answer. My daughter and I ordered oysters. Of the 4 types listed on the chalk board, they were out of 2. My wife and I ordered the soft shell crabs - they were out of those as well. We asked twice for bread, but never received it. Unlikely we will return. Too bad.
We had a wonderful Easter Brunch experience. Our waiter went above and beyond to ensure we had an enjoyable meal. The food was off the charts! The calamari, crab hush puppies, fried clams and oysters were off the scales. We had to order a 2nd plate of calamari because our 5 year old and 13 year old ate it all! Shrimp and Grits and crab Benedict were delicious! We will be returning very soon!!
Not one of our more memorable visits to GOC. My cocktail was missing an ingredient which the bartender graciously fixed. I ordered catfish tacos which were supposed to be dipped in a light batter and fried, but were heavily coated and overly tough. My wife's crabcakes were good, although a bit skimpy for the cost, and the sides were underwhelming (not a real serving, just a couple bits). Hopefully the next visit will be better or it risks dropping out of the rotation.
The tomato and lobster pasta is amazing.
Great service and food. My girlfriend thought it the best restaurant she had been to in DC.
Accommodating and delicious. I had the carb cake...all lump crab and no filler. My friend ate 2 dozen of the 4 types of oyster on the half shell, while I consumed 1 Drunken Bourbon grilled oyster(good but salty). The wine list was great and the key lime mousse was lovely.
Wonderful server and great value for fresh seafood.
Great happy hour at the bar followed by an excellent dinner with friends.
Try the sautéed soft shell crab! We also enjoyed the calamari and cioppino. Our server, Helen, was very friendly and provided just the right amount of attention. Will definitely go back!
We used to go to the Grilled Oyster quite often, but had not been a couple of years. The two main dishes we had (fish trio and steamed lobster) were excellent, as was the service. We went early, so the noise level was low. On other occasions, the noise level has been quite high, especially when there are many people at the bar for happy hour. The only negative thing about the meal was the dessert. We had the chocolate cake, which was advertised as containing white chocolate mousse. This turned out to be a very mediocre chocolate cake, and there was no way to discern if the white filling between the layers was indeed mousse. The restaurant used to have a chocolate lava cake, which was far better. One final comment: the restaurant does not serve bread--only very small "crackers" with a couple of pieces of carrots and celery. Perhaps this is to encourage ordering more appetizers. In any case, we would have appreciated some decent bread.
Food and service were very good. A little noisy, but not obnoxious. A tad pricey. Overall, a good dining experience and an excellent selection of fresh local seafood.
Patrons at the bar were very loud. They made the meal quite unpleasant until they finally left about an hour into our visit. After that it was much better, although the restaurant needs carpeting or a lower ceiling to help with the noise. The food was very good.
Food was decent but nothing remarkable... I guess that was the issue, for $150 for a dinner for two, it should have been remarkable.
Excellent fresh seafood, went back two nights in a row.
Excellent food and great staff.
Very nice service, but food is not outstanding. Chicken and mashed potatoes had no flavour. Mahi with pecan and parmesan didn't seem to have any pecan or parmesan...
Great menu choice with uncommon combinations. Very pleasant waitress.
Avoid the large table at the front near the bar. People will keep bumping you as they go to and fro during your entire meal. If the bathroom is occupied by some kid playing mobile games for a half hour, go next door to the Giant supermarket. Check your raw oysters carefully. One of the people in our party got a bad one, and choked on it. Make sure you look at *both* sides of the menu. The main courses are on one side. The burgers and starters are on the other. Highly recommend the double lobster dinner. Add a side of brussel sprouts for a great meal for two persons. The Vouvray is reasonably priced as a restaurant wine. The three fish entree is excellent. The pasta is great, too. Finally, if you have a bad experience - as we did with the table, bathroom, and bad oyster - let the manager know. He took care of our dinner check without hesitation. We will definitely go back, as we have had nine great meals and one bad but free one there.
We stumbled across GOC looking for a place to have oysters spur of the moment on a recent Saturday and it was a great find. Booked a table online 30 minutes ahead and seated right away when we arrived. Our server, Helen, was fantastic...she has been there since the restaurant opened and was really helpful navigating the menu. Really good (albeit a bit pricey) cocktail and they did not have the bottle of wine we wanted, but no real complaints here. Shrimp and oyster starter was a winner at $22 with a half dozen of each...large shrimp and an assortment of local and New England bivalves.
Lobster Cobb salad and scallop with risotto entrees were both winners, but I would not have minded another scallop. We were going to pass on dessert, but the restaurant offered chocolate and traditional creme brulee...all good with a preference for the traditional. Rick, the owner, stopped by the table to check on our meal...service overall was attentive and professional without feeling smothered. Tables seemed to turn at a good pace, but we never felt rushed. The crowd looked like a lot of locals who eat at GOC regularly...great neighborhood place that you would not expect in a strip mall.
enjoyed and had a very lovely service by helen.... made it very comfortable for some challenged guests
Delightful and delicious. We had the calamari and crab dip for starters which were tasty and filling. For our entrees we had the scallops with lobster and risotto and the scallops with grilled corn tacos. Helen was our server and she was fantastic.
Haven't been in a while. It was very good! We will be back soon.
We had a fabulous server and I wish I remembered his name!! He was great! Friendly, attentive and efficient. Our food was really good-we had between us, burger, chicken, mahi and scallops. We were all pleased as well as with our salads, soup and calamari. The atmosphere was upbeat and it was a pleasant evening.
The service was extremely slow. A party of 6 was seated at 6 pm and first food did not arrive until 7:15 pm. Fish portions were very small. The three fish entree for $28 maybe had a total of 3-4 ounces of fish and not a complete serving of vegetables. Vegetables on the plate were purely decorative. At least one dinner entree of the mahi mahi was burnt but no time to complain or send back because we needed to leave having been there so long already.
Kitchen and serve had a problem with communications percrequests of 2 guests.
We go to the Grilled Oyster often, which, in our view, attests to the good quality that we attribute to the restaurant.
The food was good but the service not so much. It took forever to order drinks and then they came to the table 1 or 2 at a time for 5 people. They said they couldn't make one drink so we ordered something else. They compted that drink then brought what was originally ordered. We were there for a birthday so no one wanted to drink until we could all toast. When we got the bill they had overcharged us by $20 for the bottle of wine we ordered. It was a very disjointed dinner.
Best crab cakes in the area!
Was a bit disappointed on this visit.
It was our 30th Anniversary and although the lovely hostess mentioned the fact, the acknowledgement by comparison to last year was only pleasant. Last year we had two glasses of bubbly both before ordering and then with dessert. We were offered a free appetizer to share.
The cream of crab soup was not up to the high standard I have enjoyed before but the very nice waitress sent it back to be “doctored” and it did improve.
The rest of the dinner was okay but perhaps because there was only one other set of diners in house or that it was a Sunday night after a busy Sunday brunch, we felt a bit let down.
But we will be back! Maybe when the fabulous Ben is there.
Nice atmosphere. Food was decent. Service left a lot to be desired, especially towards the end of the meal. Also the kitchen took it upon themselves to decide what I wanted to eat as opposed to actually sending out what I ordered
Menu is intriguing and delicious. Servers were attentive and knowledgeable. We will be coming back.
OMG! Service and the food was amazing. Shout out to our waitress, Helen. Her attention to detail and service was unprecedented.
While I love The Grilled Oyster in its Cathedral Heights location I continue to find the service, attention to food detail and attitude of the Cabin John location wanting.
I came in for Valentine’s Day dinner “with” my Valentine, who is on a deployment, so joined me for dinner over Skype. Everyone was so kind and helped make it still a special evening out, even though we were technically apart. (I feel like it almost goes without saying, but the food was on point, and the drinks were strong and tasty! The waiter didn’t mind my dozen questions about all the different oysters either haha.) They asked me if my “date” was in the military..... and completely surprised me and comped my dinner. It was the sweetest thing ever! We will definitely be back again (together in person in a few months!) ☺️☺️☺️
Valentines dinner at one of our favorite restaurants. We were disappointed with the crab hush puppies. They were very dark and greasy. Our martinis came in margarita glasses and yes they taste different when not in martini glasses.
Our waitress was very good with it being so crowded. We will go back but not on a special day.
