About The Grill Room at The Kirby House
The Grill Room doesn't pretend to be anything other than what it is - a luxurious chop house and grill. Every detail and subtle nuance has been slaved over to offer our guests the highest quality in both dining and setting. The atmosphere is superb and warm with tuscan tones, atmospheric lighting, classically cool music and the ever-popular black leather booth. The menu focuses on the steaks and chops and makes no apologies for it. The steaks are prime USDA choice, the seafood selection immaculate, and the wine and beverage list is top shelf. The beauty of The Grill Room is the relaxed and unpretentious atmosphere in the wake of the over the top quality of the menu and service. The Grill Room truly is the gem of the lakeshore.

We were last there on 9/14/17. I started with a perfectly made vodka martini and with dinner had the Oberon Cabernet. I had the Petite Filet Oscar and as usual, it didn't disappoint. Service was amazing. The waitress rushed out some bread for my starving post-sports practice teens. They each had the petite filet as well. BF had the salmon. Only concern was the escalating noise level. We sat in the back booths and it got so loud I couldn't converse with the kids sitting across the table. When we have sat in the bar tables, this seems to be less of an issue. Otherwise, as always, excellent. OH and if you go for birthdays, they give a meal discount so check on that.
We have been to The Grill Room several times. On our recent visit we were a bit disappointed. The meal option my husband was looking forward to was not longer on the menu and our steaks were not cooked to our desired request. The interior was very pleasing and we did have good service.
the salmon main was outstanding (apparently a new supplier), and the wait staff/kitchen was very good abt splitting some dishes for us. the "famous" white chicken chili has gotten a bit glue-y, however; either it had been in the pot for too long, or someone added way too much flour. an excellent caesar salad, btw.
The food was ok but not fabulous for the price. Although Ben was nice enough - he seems to take himself too seriously and was always apologizing - sometimes with a good reason and other times for things that did not require an apology - an explanation would have been adequate. We were served cold coffee to end our meal and when we told him, he brought more coffee, but it still was not hot. Because it was 9:15 pm, it seemed to me that they just didn't want to brew a fresh pot of coffee. Not really acceptable for a pricey restaurant. The Delmonico Steak had good flavor, but it seemed pretty fatty (and yes, I know that a Delmonico it is supposed to be a well marbled cut of meat. My steak had huge veins of fat - not just marbled.
THE FOOD WAS OK. THEY HAD TO REDO MYENTREE BECAUSE IT WAS PREPARED WRONG ( A STEAK). BECAUSE IT WAS DONE WRONG, MY HUSBAND'S STEAK ( A $40 MEAL)WAS JUST KEPT WARM, SO IT WAS NOT AS TENDER. THIS WHOLE PROCESS TOOK 40 MIN OF WAITING BETWEEN OUR APPETIZER AND ENTREE. FOR WHAT WE PAYED FOR THIS MEAL, I WAS NOT IMPRESSED WITH IT.
This used to be one of our go-to places in the summertime because you could get a reservation and good food. We were underwhelmed this time. Our server disappeared for long periods and did not clear away used glasses. She brought the wrong salmon dish but it took so long to get it we decided to keep it anyway. The salmon was dried out and a very small serving. My seafood linguine was just average and a very small serving. We will not go back anytime soon.
Part of Gillmore Collection guarantees good dining experiemce. Though steak menu is prominent, we ordered alternative selections. Started with Med style octopus. Very good. Main Bay of Fundy salmon was superb. 10secs longer on the grill it would have been overcooked. Plated nicely with a wild rice, kale, spinach, and sweet potato "hash". Delicious. It did not benefit from addition of sweet potato. Spouse went for vegetable bowl in garlicky broth with grilled chicken. A bit spicy. Next time. Steak!
The food was good, but not up to par with my prior experience here. Service was excellent. The biggest detraction was the sound level when the live band starred playing in the sister restaurant next door (separated by swinging doors). Sound was loud with doors shut, overpowering when open. Normal conversation is out of the question.
My wife and I went here last night for our Valentines Date. This is my 3rd time dining here at the Grill Room and every visit has been outstanding.
Yes...make a Reservation. Don't come here on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday night without a RSVP then whine and rip them on the interwebs because you have to wait or cant' get a seat. That's on you for being lazy and not planning ahead, not the fault of the staff of the Grill Room.
Ben our server was great. He made a wine suggestion of a Malbec off their current list of featured wines and it was very good and good value pick.
They bring outstanding warm bread with roasted garlic butter. We had to focus not to eat to much to save room for our entrees.
My wife and I both had Petite Fillet Oscar (Fillet Mignon with Bearnaise Sauce, crab meat and Asparagus) for $31 and our steaks were superb. I travel a lot for business and have taken clients to all the big name steak houses...Morton's, Ruth's Chris, Shula's,Capital Grill, The Chop House in Grand Rapids etc. and our fillet's were as good as any I have ever had. Flavorful, super tender perfectly Medium-Rare as ordered.
Sides are $5 each and meant to be shared by two. But we blew it out and ordered the daily special of Lobster Mac'n Cheese for $15 and split it as a side to our steak....man was that a good call. The Lobster Mac'n Cheese with the Fillets was a great combination and made the meal even more special.
They have an outstanding wine list with good selections by the glass, some good bottles in the $30-$50 range and you can blow the budget on some top notch bottles if you have deep pockets or a large expense account.
One of the best steakhouses in Western Michigan.
I have eaten here twice and both times dinners have been excellent and memorable. This was an amazing experience for me as I have multiple food allergies and typically cannot eat at non-chain restaurants, as many of them are not allergy friendly. The Staff and kitchen were very considerate of my needs and the food was delectable .
We LOVE going to the Grill Room for special occasions. It is a great setting for a date night. We recently went to dinner there for our anniversary and it was delicious as always! Our steaks were done to perfection! Delicious food and romantic atmosphere. You can't go wrong with this restaurant.
We had cocktails prior to dinner and had time for a visit with our friends and other patrons that we bumped into. Drinks were ample and well made. Dinner was tasty and served hot even though it seemed slow coming out of the kitchen. Overall our experience was very positive and we will return. The seafood linguini was top notch and my favorite on the Grill Room's menu.
