The John Dory (fish) was broiled perfectly with just the right amount of sear and light cream sauce. I would have rated it 5 stars but it was salty. I would recommend cutting back on the capers. The service was impeccable and I would definitely return the next time I'm in San Jose.

Mediocre at best. For the cost - the meat/portions are large, but there was little finesse in any of the presentation and the sides (which most notable steak houses are known for along with their cuts of meat) were banal. Bottom line - with so many other steak houses in close proximity to the Fairmont - I don't believe the Grill is worth the money. Having said that - the service was excellent and the ambiance was great for a romantic date.

This was not a very good experience. The service was rather unattentive, and the food was unexciting. My medium well steak was way past well. I realize that they probably find medium well as "She doesn't care about her steak", but if I want to pay $50 for a med well steak because that's how I like it, I expect to get med well not totally overcooked.

I would not recommend to a friend, nor would I return for that price and that food.

Was there for husband’s 50th birthday. Got a table right by the kitchen door which was constantly opening and closing with people coming out, loud, and very disappointing location for such a special occasion.

Husband’s filet was great, but three of us got seafood...salmon and halibut. None of us finished our plates. The fish was dry, and the small amount of seasoning could not cover that up.

The drinks were great, wine list great, service good. Dessert disappointing. Will not return.

Very nice meal and would expect that for the price. Bone-in fillet was exceptional and the peppercorn sauce was fantastic. Sides are huge so pick a couple, no more, unless you want leftovers.

I've been to other grill concept restaurants and always enjoyed the food. This was my first time to this location in San Jose to celebrate my birthday with my wife and daughter. The establishment's ambience can be described as being uniquely old fashioned with a classy and romantic vibe. The staff was very accommodating for locating an area of the dining room where we could park our stroller next to the table, since our daughter had fallen asleep after a long day at the museum. For starters, the complimentary house sourdough bread had an excellent crust and a soft center. The butter and Himalayan salt compliment very well with the warm bread. It was perhaps one of the best sourdough my wife and I both had. We both shared a 20 oz cowboy rib eye and wild mushroom risotto. The aged steak was cooked to a perfect medium rare and was packed with flavor! Not very often could a steakhouse nail the temperature like this one had for us. The risotto was also exceptional. It was both creamy and well cooked. The wait staff and our server was friendly and attentive. We had a wonderful experience and definitely would return if we are in the area.

Staff was very professional and friendly. Appetizers were amazing. Main course was exquisite. I would definitely recommend this place for a date night or an anniversary. One of my buddies was already talking about bringing his wife there.

Unfortunately we were very disappointed. As we have bad backs we wanted a table and chairs, not a booth. They only have two small tables with chairs, one in the dark in front of rest rooms at entrance and the other in front of the grill. We chose in front of grill. After 15 minutes wait I had to inquire why we still had no waiter. I ordered a margarita but forgot to tell waiter no salt on rim. It arrived drenched in salt. I asked if he could pour it into a plain glass without the salt. He returned but I was unable to drink it...tasted like seawater...I think he scraped all the salt from previous glass into it. I decided to order a rum daiquiri on the rocks. He returned 20 minutes later, after salad and soup were gone, with some kind of nasty orange fruit punch flavored drink. Certainly not a daiquiri. I switched to water. The iceberg lettuce wedge had a runny, milky substance poured over the top which had no taste. There were only three pea-sized pieces of low quality blue cheese on it and about 5 bits of bacon. Total rip off for the high price. My wife's lobster bisque was mediocre. My wife ordered the halibut special which she said was good. I had the filet medallions with mushroom caps. The creamed spinach had no taste. The garlic in her garlic mashed potatoes was nasty tasting...like it had rotted! Coffee good but they were too cheap to ask if we wanted a 2nd cup. Waiter disappeared after the dinner order was taken. So we were extremely disappointed at how the service and quality of this restaurant has gone down hill while their prices doubled in 5 years. I think next time in town we will do much better with one of the small, independent restaurants, of which we passed many on way to theatre. Certainly Grill on the Alley has seen better times and I would not recommend to anyone again. They still charged for one cocktail. A truly great retaurant would not have done so.

The only place I know where my teeage girls always get the filet mignon and devour it everytime. Although a little pricey, the superb & gracious service is worth it. Every booth has some sense of privacy, so a romantic date is what you will have in what can only be yermed a warm and luxurious setting.

Beautiful restaurant, but we asked to have the halibut grilled instead of baked with Parmesan crust. (We don't eat cheese.). The fish was way, way over cooked and as dry as can be. The rest of the meal was fine and service was good. Just don't ask for anything outside their normal fare. The chef is obviously not very versatile.

This was one of our favorite spots for special occasions. However, this time we got the feeling they won't be around much longer. Saturday night and it was pretty dead except for a couple tables. The one next to us was a family wearing shorts and Mom in her Miney Mouse tshirt with flip flops and kids climbing all over the booth. Fine for Chilis... not for a high end restaurant with $60-$85 steaks served a la carte. We ordered a beautiful New York steak, but that too was disappointing as it was over cooked. But the worst part of the experience came at dessert when we heard that our one reason for choosing The Grill that night was no longer an option... no more creme brûlée!!! They took it off the menu a month ago. And no more soufflés either! So sad! The whole experience didn't feel worth the very large bill!

The service was Great... Eric did a great job and was very attentive. The food was just mediocre. If they want to be a true steak house the quality of the meat must improve drastically. There are much better choices for a good steak in the bay area.

I spent $85 on a bone-in filet. It was dry and not flavorful. I could have done much better at home. The rest of the food was good to very good but not worth the $306 price tag at all. And, we brought our own wine.

We did not return the steak to avoid the hassle as at that point, we had no intention of returning.

We do not plan to return and will dis-recommend to others.

The menu items we selected were really very good, except the mac & cheese which was just average. The wines are rather pricey, so you might prefer to take some of your own, even with the $25 corkage fee. It's a dimly lit quiet place quite suitable for conversations, and we did not feel rushed at all.

I always love coming to this restaurant but was extremely disappointed this time. With a group of five and the entire restaurant completely empty we were sat literally in the kitchen. Unfortunately our party was delayed but the server was patient with us which I greatly appreciated. The noise level from the clanging dishes and being passed by every server and staff members really ruined this restaurant for me. Seeing only a few tables fill I was hoping we'd get moved because 95% of the restaurant was empty for our 3 hour dinner. This was a business meal with out-of-town customers and we had to yell at eat other to hear over the dishes being banged around. It was not how I normally experience meals at the grill I will question going back again.

Our servers were lovely & attentive but sadly the food let us all down.
The halibut ordered by 2 in our party was served with the sauce when it was ordered with no sauce. The fish was mediocre at best. The lobster tail was tough & had a smoky pepper sprinkled all over it which did nothing for the taste.
Our kale salads were overdressed with an oily dressing.
The vegetables did not all come out together.
They were out of all sorbets & most ice-cream & only had vanilla ice cream.
3 coffee mocas were made twice as they were cold - both times - but we gave up !!
As I said our servers were great , the kitchen was the problem.
At $100 a head with only 2 glasses of wine we will never go back there.
There are plenty places to eat in the area , go to them !!

There are a lot of, "Steakhouse" options in the vicinity. Can't say I know the standards of the others but found The Grill to be quite a pleasant surprise. Perhaps my only negative was that the dining room definitely felt like you were in a hotel. Still nice but in a hotel. Menu was diverse and of good quality options (both food and wine). Food was impeccable and our server Tim was GREAT! Toward the end of the meal, we had a small team transitioning our experience from dinner to dessert. I'd definitely return!

The service was outstanding and our party of 7 for lunch really enjoyed the experience. The chicken pot pie seemed to be a good choice as well as the fish tacos. The big disappointment was the filet salad. The steak was cooked to order but the cut was very disappointing- tough and grizzly- absolutely not what I'd expect for the price.

Outstanding steak dinner, as expected and per usual.

One gripe: I noted on the reservation that it was a birthday dinner. So I wasn't surprised when they brought my wife a small birthday desert with a candle in it.

I was surprised and very disappointed that the check included an $8 charge for the birthday desert. What? I hadn't specifically ordered such a desert, and have aways found them to be complimentary when they are brought.
