The Grill on the Alley was a big disappointment. After being seated, we waited about 10 minutes just for a waiter. My wife and I ordered drinks, but we had to ask twice for our drink order which took another 15 minutes. After ordering our meal, it took about an hour to be served. Our steaks were disappointing and not worth the price charged. If you want a good steak dinner, I would suggest Morton's, LB Steak or Forbes Mill.
Amazing cocktails, perfectly cooked steak, and some great pasta! We were self-conscious about being a bit under-dressed for this gem of a restaurant, but still welcomed with open arms at the end of a long day near our conference. Such a relief to have stunningly efficient and friendly service when we truly needed to unwind. We had Team 4 -- Teresa, Audrey, & Hector. They were all wonderful and attentive, and we'd ask for them again if we go back to San Jose. Menu is a bit pricey, and it grew louder as the restaurant filled up, but we'd still recommend this to anyone for a nice occasion. Enjoyed two of the uniquely flavored martinis, and some luxurious red wine from Napa with our entrees.
Service is excellent and consistent with a great steak house. The lobster bisque was superb and plenty of lump lobster in a tasty bisque. My wife had a filet which was very flavorful, seasoned and cooked as desired. The fish was moist and prepared with a lemon caper burre blanc. Nice selection of wines including half bottles. Highly recommend this steak house!
Terrific place, good food, ambience etc. especially for a business meal.
My negative comment is that the portions are way too large and therefore way too expensive but that seems to be a trend in restaurants these days. I could only eat 1/2 of my salad
Great food, great service. Unfortunately, a group of giggly pre-teen girls came in to eat at like 9:00PM - not the ambiance we were hoping for. Some people were dressed in shorts and flip-flops - no clue how to dress for dinner. California can often be too casual.
The prime NY steak was perfect. Let down just little by warm (not hot) sides of spinach and shoestring fries. If you are going to cook the perfect steak then at least make sure the relatively simple sides are hot! My wife had the John Dory fish which I tasted and it was also excellent. We will be going back for sure and we hope to have hot sides with the excellent entrees.
This is one of our favorite places in the South Bay when we're looking for a high end meal. Our service from Teresa was excellent, although the bread person was no where to be found. We finished our drinks and appetizers and finally asked if bread had to be requested as we never received any. We also tried some new food choices, and the food wasn't as good as usual. The piccata sauce was rather salty and the cook put it on both the chicken piccata and the salmon (a different sauce should have been on the salmon). The lobster bisque also seemed somewhat thin and had no chunks at all in it. We'll be back but hope the food will be back to the standards it was on past visits.
Our party of 5 met for lunch. The restaurant was not crowded as there must have been only a few other parties at the time. Everyone enjoyed their food: chicken pot pie, meat loaf, burrata and the service was very good. But our enjoyment was diminished by the cold temperature in the restaurant. Granted, we are in the middle of a cold snap and the management apologized for lack of control in turning up the thermostat. But what could have been a lovely lunch was compromised by the fact that we were all cold throughout our meal.
Rushed through dinner. Pre fixe menu for valentine dinner. Ordered cocktails and the waiter asked if we were ready order. We said maybe appetizers. The waiter says might as well order everything since things are not served one right after another. Surprise! The appetizer arrived before our drinks. As soon as we finished our appetizer the main course arrived. So far have not been able to finish our drinks so we can order wine. End of main course we order wine. He brings the wine and we are finished our dinner. He picks up the plates and serves desert within 30 seconds. Valentines dinner lasted 45 minutes! Food good, not anything spectacular that can't be had a many other restaurants. Sat us in a room next to the main dining room that had zero ambiance. Next year's celebration will NOT be The Grill.
The service and the food were amazing! We brought our 3.5 year old daughter along for a nice dinner, and she was very pleased. She loved the popcorn shrimp and my lobster bisque. I was glad that I ordered the salmon grilled. It was one of the best I've ever had at a restaurant. My husband was a little disappointed that they only had two orders of the John Dory available, and of course, they had already been ordered. But he was extremely happy with the burger. They even surprised us with an anniversary dessert! This was our second time here and we will definitely be coming back!
Last Saturday night I took my wife to Grill in the Alley to celebrate her 66 Birthday. This has been our go to place to celebrate Birthdays. Last Saturday night we had Ryan and Crystal for our team servers. By the end of the meal Ryan was acting like a complete JERK! Here is what happened: we ordered drinks, a soup, and our dinners. My wife never received her soup, and when I had asked what happened to my wife's drink order he said he would check with the bar. We asked Crystal about the AWOL drink, she said she would check with Ryan. Five minutes later the drink arrived. When our dinner's arrived I had asked for a second drink, and about 15 minutes later I had to ask Crystal again, if she could check on the status of my drink. When Ryan finally brought the drink, I was finished with my dinner. However, here is the reason why I earlier referred to Ryan as a jerk. When he placed the glass of wine on the table he made it a point to place it right in front of me and clicking my empty dinner plate. My wife thought it was a intimidation tactic. I kind of ignored the incident, since I am a fairly big guy and was on a Special Ops team in the Army. In hindsight, it was a jerk face move! My wife's broccoli was not grilled as advertised on the menu, but steamed. For dessert we ordered the peach cobbler and decaf coffee. The cobbler was pretty good, but the coffee in the carafe was ice cold. (Not sure why, nor do I understand). When we received our bill, the soup which we never received was still on the Bill, and Ryan stated he forgot to take it off the Bill. Ryan seemed to be preoccupied or maybe overworked while we were there. Crystal was the Star of the night. When we had asked for her assistance, she always answered in the affirmative, and with a great smile. I was very surprised by our visit to Grill in the Alley! In the past we have always used Grill in the Alley as our Gold Standard to measure other restaurants service and food quality.
we typically love coming here for special occasions and great steaks. this time was a little dissapointing because our steaks were cooked more than we liked and my steak was more salty than normal. our servers were not as attentive as usual and in the past when our main meal was finished, they'd scrape up the bread crumbs but not this time even though they saw me doing it with the dessert menu.
The Grill is always a treat. I dined there this Thursday and met Theresa, the superstar server. I went with the filet and it was amazing. Love the spicy rub they use. The size-12 baked potatoes are killer. The half portion of the featured salad was perfect.
My only complaint was about the WiFi. Dining alone, I like to use my phone during my meal. I never could connect to restaurant's system, even though I sat nearby a week ago and it worked. The new GM stopped by and tried to help, to no avail. When you go to a first class restaurant, you want everything to work perfectly. I'm surprised the GM didn't offer to buy me a drink or dessert to compensate fo my inconvenience. I'm still waiting!
The appetizers were phenomenal- we ordered the seafood tower (large size) with fresh lobster tails, mussels and shrimp. Two thumbs up for the appetizers!
Main course... man what a letdown. We thought the steaks would be amazing and once we got them, the porter steak looked like a steak I could get from Longhorn Steakhouse for $20.
Overall atmosphere is amazing but is it worth it...? I am not sure...
This was a terrible choice. We came here looking for a decent steak. The "Team Service" offered was not existent. We ordered sparkling water as we sat in and it took them about 10 minutes to get us the water. I ordered a medium rare NT steak that was well over medium, and even though the manager offered to replace it, I decided not to accept it because I was already half way. In general service was very slow. I have to say that the calamari were good. I will not come back.
Our server was very occupied by something else. We ordered our drinks which were water and coke she came back about 15 minutes later asking if we were ready to order with no drinks in hand. It was hard to get a refill on my water glass as she rarely came around and our 7:30 dinner came out at 8:45, not very fast service that’s for sure!
I love the atmosphere from the bar to the dining room. Friendly staff but all talk and little action. We expected to have a complete dinner from cocktails, apps, salad, entree, dessert & cappuccinos. We waited so long to order & then waited & waited for our seafood platter that we even considered leaving. The platter was delicious & presentation perfect. That’s what kept us there along with requesting to chat with the manager. With a change in our waiter things picked up in a pleasant direction. Our salads, entrees & dessert were good however at this point our mood had been slightly comprised. Overall we left happy because of our company & we were full.
Showed up for our reservation for five people. They tried to put us on a corner adjacent to the kitchen, up against another table where we could barely get in and the service passway. Even though there were other tables available, the Mgr said they could not accommodate us. He said next time we make a reservation we “need to request a quiet table.” Noted
TGOTA is one unit of a notable chain of high end steakhouses. These restaurants have a standardized look, courteous staff, and generally well prepared food. We had an excellent iceberg lettuce wedge with tasty blue cheese dressing. The dish was more than two could eat. We had a chicken pot pie. Almost all chicken with a few peas and carrots. Very good sauce. The cpp crust was excellent. The dish was very good. We had a petite NY strip. 12 oz which pretty big these days. The alternative was 16 oz. the only problem was the meat was not juicy and tender. Cheese cake dessert was good. We have eaten at LA and Thousand Oaks versions of this restaurant which seem better. 18 years ago when we are at this San Jose restaurant I had the best steak ever then it now. We are dealing with the bits and grits. Go and try it. See what you think.
