So disappointed, attending concert told them upon arrival, told waitress ordered 5:20 no food on table until 6:00 ... restaurant did not appear to be packed either .... food quality poor steak full of ribeye mostly fat salad bland ... waitress clearly could see my disappointment that we had to eat and run ... joked about not giving me knife as I was upset ... very unprofessional for the type of restaurant and prices they charge ! Expected more ... will not return
Upscale and lovely dining experience for a pre-concert dinner. Relaxing meal and good portions, attentive service and delicious food. Would happily return!
Food was good, our server was just "so so -- nothing special" I don't even recall her name - her service was mediorce. We ordered lobster tails but she never brought them and we were not charged so all was ok by us. We informed it was our Anniversary and she recommended the fudge chocolate dessert. It disappointing when your server DOES NOT LISTEN to the customer or RETAIN what the customer requests.

Party of 3
Paid with VISA
By Mark McDaniel
We had an excellent waitress. The food was delicious. We had a very nice time.
When we arrived home with our doggie box, we found that none of our sides were in the box. Only the partial remains of two of our entrees - 2/3 of a leftover crab cake, and my last piece of chicken piccata.
Two fully dressed baked potatoes - only partially eaten - were missing
One full side of mashed potatoes - was missing
We paid sooo much for our meal, and the quantity of those sides was about 1/3 of everything we ordered!
I was sick
Writing about it, these days later, I can feel myself getting very upset.
If we had boxed up our own leftovers this would not have happened.
An older male employee in a white coat took our meals to a side table with his back to us after I had swept my arm over the table to indicate we wanted the remaining food. I couldn't see what he was doing. OMG! I would have stopped him if I'd thought our food would be treated differently here than any other restaurant - expensive or otherwise.
It makes me sick because I know the employee threw out all of our leftover food.
It is very important that the Grill on the Alley understand how upset I am, and will be for a while
My service rating of 3 stars out of 5 is based solely on the behavior of this one employee. Had it not been for him, my service rating would be 5 stars out of 5
Food does not taste as well for the cost. Will not recommend.
My favorite spot except I moved my reservation from restaurant to bar area. Way too cloud like a meat locker. We still had a five star dinner in the new bar. My suggestion is to keep the restaurant at a 70-72 degrees.
Great service and food
The food was great. The service was excellent. The price was a bit high but worth it.
Great food/drinks and excellent service and ambiance. Local to shows and easy parking next door.
Mary, our main server, along with the other servers were extremely attentive. Food was great. They even gave my daughter celebrating her birthday a cake. Highly recommended.
Friday night chaos in the kitchen, with multiple delays between courses. Our wonderful waiter Paul really tried to make it better, keeping us appraised of the kitchen’s progress. Entrees were warm, as was after dinner coffee. We are hoping it was a random moment, because we really like coming here.
Waited one hour, twenty five minutes after ordering. Food had not arrived. Asked the receptionist to intercede. After another wait, food arrived for two of us and nothing for the other two of us. I talked to the receptionist again, and she said she would talk to the manager. He arrived after several minutes, and I explained the situation to him. As we were talking some food arrived at the table. One order was completely incorrect, and the other order had pomme frites at refrigerator temperature. After further delays, all food was finally delivered. By then, the first two guests had completed their meals. When the bill arrived, we were charged for five meals for the four of us!
The actual manager showed up, apologized, adjusted the bill severely, and gave us coupons for future visits.
This is definitely our go to restaurant for a great steak and/or great salmon.
We go here only once or twice a year when going through San Jose. We always look forward to eating at Grill on the Alley. This visit was not so good. The wedge salad was uninspired, the baked potato not so warm. The ribeye was very good. The service started out good and gradually disappeared, had to start flag down a manager for service. Sorry to see the degraded experience.
Fun! Fun! Fun!
This is our favorite restaurant for special occasions and they didn’t let us down. Super food, excellent service, thanks to Steve. It will continue to be are to go place!!!
The ambiance was pleasant. The food was mostly good, but the fries were undercooked. They should have been crisp, and they were not. The waiter was friendly and accomodating. It seemed the prices were a little higher than they should have been.
Excellent food at extremely high prices. Trendy but Poor value.
The food was superb as always! We made our server aware we were going to a show and she helped expedite the meal though we were easily done in plenty of time. She was very knowledgeable and helpful with our meal choices including getting several sauces on the side.
The food was excellent... we enjoyed a high-quality steak that was prepared perfectly! The sides were great as well. The service was outstanding and our waiter was fun to talk with. Overall the Grill on the Alley was a pleasant surprise. We chose this restaurant because it's located inside the Fairmont San Jose, but we would recommend it for anyone visiting the San Jose area.
Food was good. Server Jed was the youngest in his family and hike has two sisters. One in Washington and one in Texas. Should I know all this without asking about it ? Nice guy but was on us a little to close.
Food was ok. Service was SLOOOOWWWWW. Disappointing when it's usually so much better.
Had a wonderful evening with friends! The food was amazing as always and the martini with blue cheese olives was a perfect addition to a fabulous dinner? Reason I did not give 5 stars for the over all event is that they keep taking the grand marnier souffle off of the menu, this is a big reason why I like to frequent this place.
We came in for Mother’s Day lunch. The restaurant was pretty dead. The service was great. The food was not. I have been here many times and have always had a great food experience. We ordered the Filet Mignon, lobster tail and king crab legs. The crab we ordered hot- came out ice cold. The lobster was very chewy (I couldn’t even cut it with my knife) and tasted like it needed to be cooked longer. The filet we ordered rare, which was cooked good but the cut was Terrible-50% of it was not editable due to fat and gristle. We asked for another steak which we got but that one came out almost not cooked at all- due to them rushing it back out to us and had absolutely NO flavor. For the price of our meal- it should have been way better. The service was top notch so I’m hoping the food experience was better for other mothers that day.
Every single aspect ofour dining experience was outstanding.
Love the food, service, and overall everything about that place! Paul was awesome!
The staff was amazing. Fantastic food cooked to perfection.
I LOVE this place. The jumbo lump crab cakes are amazing (best i have had) and the lobster bisque soup is to die for...all other dishes are great but I would go just for those two items, alone. Sophisticated and upscale restaurant vibe and excellent five star service. I have been here many times over the years and I have never been disappointed.
For a Foodie to tell us the crab cakes are the best they've ever had is the highest compliment we could ask for. Thank you for choosing us, and thank you for the feedback! We strive to be your restaurant of choice for all occasions, big and small!
This place has always been our “goto” spot prior to attending events at the SAP Center. Tonight’s meals, not good. My wife’s Ribeye was tough & chewy, and my Filet taste like it was a poor Safeway cut of meat. Strange, but sub-par tonight.
We're saddened to hear that we were not able to live up to the expectations we've set in the past of what The Grill On The Alley should be. We appreciate the feedback and hope you know that we take seriously the comments from our guests and use them to better ourselves and elevate the guests experience moving forward. I hope that you give us a chance to make it up to you and show you that we care. We aim to be your restaurant of choice for all occasions, big or small.
Birthday and date night. Great meal, service and company.
Charlie, we're happy to have made your birthday celebration a memorable one, and hope that means you'll come to see us every year!! (And a few times in between)
I have gone to the Grill on the Alley at least fifty times since it opened (yes 50) Tonight I decided to take my son and his girlfriend there to celebrate a special evening.
I was so disappointed
First off, the dust on the back of the booth was so thick, you could write your name in it. I was so shocked, the thick dust was along the entire back of the circular booths, it was filthy! I know they are in the midst of construction on the front bar, but this obviously hadn’t been cleaned in a long time. I brought it to the attention of the waitress who did nothing.
So we decided to ignore it and enjoy our dinner.
Soup was wonderful, steak was ok, they forgot my mashed potatoes and the broccoli we ordered was burned. Charcoal burned.
Total we had one bottle of wine, one appetizer, Three soups, two entries ( they shared crab cakes) , two sides and one desert and the bill was over $300.
It was not the same as it use to be. It was dirty, and the food was very mediocre.
I have so many fond memories about the quality of The Grill, but tonight really put a negative cast on the restaurant.

Very nice place with very nice and calm ambiance, great waiter service just a little on the price side.
Great steaks, salad and calamari
Thank you James!! We look forward to seeing you again in the near future!
Pricey but good, all there steaks one notch undercooked, they comped dessert for the inconveniences.
Excellent food, outstanding service. Lisa is a terrific server. Overall experience was great.
Absolutely great place! Skilled staff, great food. Way to go!
Great food and friendly service! Definitely would recommend if you are in the San Jose area.
Food was very good, but the service was over intense- felt like they were trying to push me to order more and more, and coming to the table to check on us too many times.
Also, very pricey for the value. Expect to spend >$100 per person even without alcohol.
Both service and food was terrific. I would highly recommend The Grill!
