The Grill at Forty 1 North Ratings and Reviews
We arrived on Valentines Day for lunch and had a lovely time. The food was creative and wine choices interesting, as were the house cocktails. Our server was attentive, yet gave us the space we desired on such an occasion. The decor showed attention to detail and provided a setting commensurate with the exceptional water view. Although a bit pricey, we felt it was certainly worth it and would go back for another special occasion in the future.
Music was loud - it was fine when the room filled up but with only a couple of tables seated, it was distracting. Server had to be asked three or four times to bring the bar manager out to help us with a wine question. She knew nothing about the wine list and when she did ask the wine manager for his recommendation, she couldn't remember it when she got back to the table. Sides came to the table after we were almost done with our meal - she fessed up to getting that wrong and comped them on our bill. It's a lovely room, the food was excellent (loved the fried okra in with the calamari!) but we'll probably give it a pass next Christmas Eve.
My wife and I had been to the grill before and loved it so we decided to invite friends to meet us there for a wonderful evening. We had a 7:15 reservation but got there a half hour early to enjoy the fireplace near the bar. My wife went to the bar to get a drink menu and was pretty much ignored. I went up and was able to get one and ordered drinks. Our friends arrived and I went back to the bar to order drinks for them. I ordered one but they did not have the other so I said I would be right back with the other drink order. When I cam back I was ignored for 10 minutes and when the gal finally came back it was 7:15 so we cancelled our order to be seated. I went to check in and was told the table would be ready in a minute. A half hour later we were finally seated. The dining room was so loud we could barely hear each other and we had a hard time hearing the waitress and she had a hard time hearing us. The noise was coming from one table with very loud young women. Most people in the restaurant were turning and staring at the loud table each time a loud roar would come from it. The bread came when we were finishing the appetizer course and desert came while some of us were still eating the entrees.
I was so disappointed in the management for not asking the table of women to be quieter. This is a relatively expensive restaurant in a beautiful hotel. I am not sure what changed since the last time we were there but the service, wait, and noise level were horrible.
The ambiance is great. My daughter and I had wonderful food ina beautiful place. I live in Newport and plan to return. The bartender was very nice great coffee margarita but too expensive next time we will skip the cocktails and enjoy the food and the service as well as the beautiful location
Fantastic anniversary meal. Chef Terrence is a very talented and thoughtful chef. The steaks were better than any steakhouse and the seafood dishes with lobster amazing. The food was cooked to perfection and wine pairings fabulous. The staff was very attentive but not instrusive.
We were very disappointed with our experience at The Grill at 41 North. We were unexpectedly seated outside on a cool night, and the one space heater for our party of 8 was insufficient (and kept shutting off throughout the meal). The service was terrible - long waits, odd intermittent setting and removal of silverware/glasses throughout, and incorrect wine servings. Lastly, we were celebrating a birthday in our party and asked for a few slices of cake, one with a candle, to come out for dessert and surprise the birthday girl. Well, a few slices of cake came out, but the one with the candle came out several minutes after the others, so the surprise was blown.
The quality of the food was excellent, but the poor service made for a negative overall experience. We will not be back.
The service started out terrible with needing to ask for a server after 15-20 minutes of being seated. When she finally came over she was unfriendly.
One of the managers ended up getting our drink order and handling our table the rest of the evening. He more than made up for the delayed attention and took care of us the rest of the evening. It's not about the initial issue...it's all about how it's addressed moving forward. In this case, it was top notch.
The food was awesome as expected.
Very expensive. thats ok, but we ate on the deck and no one could see their food by the time it arrived. Average cuisine at best. Waiter missed a couple things we asked for, so service was not great for the prices.
Normally, we don't care what the cost is, but $17 for a glass of mediocre chardonnay is crazy. I do not recommend this for most folks.
The food was ok but not great. The portions were very small, except the steaks, which were very large. The "surf and turf" had a good-sized filet mignon and a tiny spoonful of lobster. Although I had the impression that the wait-staff was well-intentioned, the service was very slow and for periods of time we almost felt they had forgotten about us (we were a party of 6 - not easy to lose).
