Eatery at the Grant House
A very disappointing birthday dinner experience
My wife and I have birthdays a day apart. I was here for lunch with friends this summer and I was looking forward to bringing my wife here for a special occasion. We made reservations through Open Table which directed us to a 6:45 reservations. That turned out to be a little late for us on a dark evening.
There were very few guests and no table cloths at a fairly expensive restaurant. They were out of our first choices. My Caesar salad was right out of what looked like a grocery store salad kit, with sparse dressing and some pieces of dried stale bread. My wife's Brussels sprouts were dry, but passable. Her main course was chicken and dumplings with a big leg and thigh of Arkansas type chicken and cut up pieces of dough out of a pop out container of Pillsbury ready to bake rolls. It was all floating in a white tasteless broth that didn't come with a spoon until we asked for one. My Jambalaya tasted OKAY, but the presentation was so so.
The home is nicely restored and worth seeing. Perhaps breakfast would be your best option. Service was friendly, but not necessarily efficient. In spite of everything, we made it another year.
I would recommend The Grant House as it is in a nice setting. We were there for brunch. The dining room was very cold, and service was slow. Food was good (for the most part), but not anything spectacular. My daughter had the smoked chicken salad, and it barely had a few small pieces of chopped chicken on it and a plate of lettuce for $15. She NEVER complains, but this time she said "well, I don't think I will be ordering that again". The egg dishes were more plentiful.
Our server was great, the food was not. We both ordered the Alfredo and it was very sticky and not creamy at all. My 12 dollar salad was a pile of greens with a couple of raw walnuts (menu states candied) and a few chunks of blue cheese.
I did overall love this place, been wanting to go for a while. Although our party of six ended up in the rear of the house in a small room with white walls. It felt a little cold and lacking ambiance..(my designer head kicked in and i was imagining where i would place pictures etc to make it more cosy). I wished we could have been put in one of the other rooms with the deep red walls that looked far more inviting..(but maybe i should have asked..:-( )
3 of us really wanted the yummy sounding Meatloaf, but were told that they ran out (our table was for 7pm). Our server (whom we loved by the way) offered us the burger from the lunch menu which was really nice, as two of our party are big burger eaters! I opted for the chicken pasta, and although came in a big bowl and great size portion, was not my favorite! :-(
This will not stop me trying this place again..for sure..it had a magnetic draw to it, and makes me want to go back..and soon!
What a fun place to have lunch. Loved the history, the food and the service. Marie was great.
We enjoyed our meal at The Grant House but, there were a couple of things to note. The "crème brule" was not that at all. It was essentially pumpkin pie filling with a glazed sugar top so, when the menu say's "fruit in season crème brule" be aware. I s'pose they thought that pumpkin pie filling qualified as the "fruit in season". It didn't. However, the meat loaf was outstanding and my wife loved her chicken alfredo. The server was inexperienced at best and left out a few things that will hopefully soon become second nature. Overall, we did enjoy and will surely give it another visit.
Delightful space in Historic Officers Row. Great brunch and service. We’ll be back!
We could have just had salad and starters.. Was not thrilled about the main dished. Had my hopes up on the Jumbilia, not what I expected. The rest made up for it.
Great date night location! Love the cozy warm feel and delicious meal choices. Friendly and prompt service.
The food and the service was great. It was quiet on a Wednesday afternoon which I appreciate since some places are so loud . The ambiance is lovely and the views from our table by a window were beautiful.
The Dine the Couve special this month is a great value to try new and exciting places to go out.
Our dinner was burned! Bad experience. We looked forward to our dinner at The Grant House but it was a bad experience. Honestly, for being a historic landmark it needs to be an outstanding experience everytime a customer walks into the Grant House. It definitely is not a fine dining experience. It was a slow night just two other people and ourselves were there eating. No excuses!
Eight of us gathered to celebrate the retirement of 3 friends and gathered in the porch room off the dining room. This allowed us to have great conversation without bothering others nor could we hear diners in the main room. The service was excellent and responsive and helpful.
We had a variety of dishes and everyone liked what they got. Especially the desert of pumpkin flavored creme brûlée was to die for along with yummy short bread cookies filled with frosting.
Such a charming setting - the whole experience was outstanding ! The service was impeccable and the food was so delicious. What a lovely gem right here in Vancouver.
I was disappointed with where we were seated.
I brought a very dear friend to celebrate her 87th birthday. We were seated in the bar!!!
I’m not sure why I didn’t say anything but when they first seated us in a very tight corner of the bar, I asked to move by the window....not thinking it would have been lovely on the other part of the restaurant or there looked like a sun room or a light area looking outside at the grounds...very disappointing.
Service in the bar was poor...and the French toast with a small portion of fruit compote...for 14...it was ok...
Went for “dine the Couve month” beautiful building, our first time there, the wait staff were very polite and quickly served us although the place was not full (Friday 5.30pm). One of the dessert options on the dine the couve menu was not available but they gave us a couple of other options. The food was served quickly and was very tasty.
Had a wonderful Sunday lunch there. The food was well presented and very good. Our only complaint was that it was cool inside. The ladies wish they had brought a jacket.
Loved to old building.
Food and service was great! My friend was visiting from LA and loves the French toast!
Great happy hour on porch, on a warm September night. Dinner inside was great, historic ambiance was cool.
Great place for a friends get together. Quiet, so easy to chat. No pressure put on us to hurry through anything and the service was outstanding!
Great experience! Service was fantastic. The manager, bartender, waiter was a hoot. The rain move in and they accommodated. We will he back for sure!
Fun place with tons of history. Went for long over due Sunday brunch date with my husband. I did not like our seat and they wouldnt let us move even though they had several non reserved tables open... which was disappointing. I asked for a 'quiet secluded window table if possible' when I made my reservation. We ended up being seated right at the door to the dining room, with people bumping our elbows and table when they come and go. At least 7 tables were available that were not in the center of action but she would not let is move. Husbands food was excellent. He had the country fried steak and loved it. between 1 and 10 he would rate it a 7. I ordered french toast. Great flavor but the bread was over 2 inches thick so be prepared to eat a lot of bread with the French toast. I would rate the French toast a 5. This place was fun and has a lot of history. They give you a self guided tour sheet that explains the house and some of it's unique features. It's a must see for tourists.
Just the best brunch spot. Period!
The bartender/manager is fantastic. He remembered us from last time. Maria was our server again. We really enjoyed our visit. Food is fantastic and the atmosphere is wonderful. We sat outside this time. It was great. Thank you!💓💓
nice setting, good food and service for a quiet dinner
The seating on the front porch was enjoyable. There is a nice overhang that blocks direct sun, but is wide open to the parade grounds. We ordered smoked trout hash and chicken he contributed to a very nice dining experience.
Maria was an awesome server!
We were very diapointed in the menu at Grant House! We should have looked at that before making reservations! The last time we were there, we had quiche and bread pudding. There certainly was nothing like that on this menu! The table behind us wanted the black bean burger. They were OUT OF IT at 12:00! Unexceptable! For the prices charged, I think you could have a better menu! We didn’t stay! We went somewhere to have a decent meal.
Afrewards, we stopped to visit friends and talked about our experience. They had been at Grant House with friends one evening, and had “the worst service and a terrible meal. They went home afterwards and fixed something to eat.
It’s a shame such a pleasant setting is getting a terrible repetition, both in service and food. I previously had been there for lunches and tea luncheons that were wonderful. I’ll not go back again until improvements are made.
Seating in the bar is like sitting in a timeless, relaxed study. Great for a business lunch or afternoon cocktails. Comfortable chairs and unique copper topped tables. Ties to the historic feel of the location. Bar staff are attentive without being unnecessarily present. Salads are perfectly dressed and balanced for a delicious light lunch.
Friendly staff and great food in a little bit of history
We came to Grant House to celebrate our 46th anniversary. We sat outside to enjoy the view and weather, food was delicious and unique, the chocolate mousse cake was the perfect finish to our meal. The person that waited on us was the best: kind, calm, not rushed, was available but gave us our space.
The Eatery at Grant House is in transition right now. There is a new chef, new servers, and new manager. Service was slow (understaffed), chef hasn’t found his stride yet, but the manager recognized the issues and was on top of the situation. For years the Grant House has been designated as a great dining destination. I’m sure the issues will be worked out. Kaci (manager) is very proactive. We will be back. The food eventually was very good.
Beautiful setting. We sat outside for lunch on a lovely summer day. Only complaint was the airport noise. Nice selection of food choices. Lunch was really not equivalent to the setting, but the dessert was excellent. Would like to try an evening meal.
Been there several times. Summer deck dining the Best! I’m 27 year retired military so the view of parade field and the landscaping are fantastic. Could expand the menu some!! The hanger steak was good and replaced by Ulysees , also good, but why not both? More like almond chicken breast and shrimp and scallop meals, maybe added. The Maryhill wine there now, good! The gal hostess was great! We enjoy it there!
It's pleasant to sit outside on a nice sunny day. It's very quiet place. The food is great, and they have vegetarian options.
Perfect for a nice lunch with my team. The outdoor patio setting was ideal, and the service was fantasic (thanks, Dylan!). We enjoyed a tasty lunch and dessert. The only drawback was limited food options for the vegetarian on our team, but she was still happy with her entree.
The restaurant was as expected a lovely fine dining establishment. The food was well presented, the service was attentive.
Very nice. Good food and good service. Love the area, such good views.
Our food was fantastic and our server was knowledgeable, friendly, and prompt. We sat outside on the veranda and had a lovely lunch.
There was no dressing on the ceasar salad, had to ask for two extra bowls. It was so dry I thoguht they totally forgot to put ANY on the salad. Portion sizes are very small especially biscuits and gravy, the sausage ordered was a patty and not links, and the biscuit was hard. The eggs bemedict egg was hard boiled and not cooked properly. A total disappointment
