The Grange Bar & Eatery serves up blackboard specials, comfort grub and drinks in a friendly farmhouse-inspired space, featuring cozy booths, white oak floors, brick-lined walls and antique chandeliers. This downtown restaurant and bar also offers a tidy list of ingredient heavy dishes. Treat yourself to a roasted-beet salad, some watermelon with feta or seared crab cakes, served next to celery slaw.
The Grange is a popular neighborhood watering hole. Alongside its rotating offering of beer and wine, the 74-seat bar offers a special beverage program that features specialty cocktails such as the Convent Stroll (soda, lemon juice, ginger, whiskey and honey). Open all through the week, The Grange stays in full swing until 4 a.m. every day, making it an appealing pick for the late night crowd.
Took my mom out to live jazz at the Grange on Sunday night while she was in town, and she loved it! The food was excellent as usual, the music was good, and the service was great! Will be back.
Very good food, service, ambiance (except for the noise level). We'll be back!
Delicious food, very good service.
Good food and value, but many service issues marred our overall experience. Reservation was for a party of five last Sat.
1. Open Table reservation was not initially honored. We were first told it didn’t exist. Then it was found. Then we were told that Open Table is not connected to their main reservation system. (Does anyone think that’s a legitimate reason to deny service, or reasonable to tell customers? Seems another reviewer on this site had the same experience - check Gweniveire’s review.)
2. We had to appeal to the manager, prove our reservation, and press our case to get a table, which turned out in the end to be available and visible.
3. No decanter available for the red wine we ordered.
4. Waitress initially refused to repurpose a wide-mouth glass water bottle as a decanter despite six unused ones visibly sitting on service bar. (“Those are for water.” Huh?)
5. I had to appeal to the bartender for a spare water bottle before one was reluctantly used as a makeshift decanter.
6. Entrees brought out while we were still working on our appetizers. Server appeared perplexed by our request to keep entrees off the table until first course was completed.
7. Lamb porterhouse was requested rare. It was served well-done. (Thankfully, sending it back went smoothly.)
8. It was difficult to get our assigned waitress’ attention. (It was not a full house.) Fortunately, we were able to get an alert waitress’ attention from a nearby table.
Two of our party were celebrating birthdays, so speed bumps were particularly unwelcome. In the end, we spent a few hundred dollars and left a tip anyway. I’m unsure about coming back: Because the overall store culture and system do not appear to be designed around outstanding customer experience, I believe avoiding a repeat would be a gamble. Planning to spend more time at Fumo and Oso, two great places a block or two further south on Amsterdam.
I love the grange. Excellent food, value wines, good service. Was there on a Saturday night And it was not too crowded or too loud. What more can you ask for?
Lovely. Welcoming space; tables are not too close together, and on a warm night, there are some twos
outside. The Grange has a very nice menu with a mix of small and large plates. There's something for everyone. My group had swordfish, blackened salmon tacos, rack of lamb, cauliflower quinoa burgers, and salads, and we were all very happy. Good fries; excellent, unusual cocktails. Don't miss the fresh, hot donuts for dessert. Will return often.
It was fine.
Fresh and delicious. Menu broad enough to please many people. Outdoor tables on busy street.
Food was excellent except for a slighly underwhelming steak. Nice selection of beers to go along with the laid-back atmosphere and friendly staff.
A good experience. The ambiance and service were good and made the meal a pleasant experience.
Was my second visit after liking my first!
This is an EXCELLENT restaurant, with reasonable prices and nice casual vibe.
Favorite place to take my parents in my neighborhood. Great brunch and lunch, highly recommend the french toast for brunch and gnocchi thereafter :D
Our waiter was fantastic. There were four of us and we all liked what we had. Highly recommend
Just a very nice experience.
The Grange did something that I still don't understand. We booked a 6:45 PM reservation via Open Table, and showed up at the restaurant at 6:35. We were told that our reservation did not exist, despite the confirmation I showed them on my phone. They asked, would you like to sit at a high-top at the front? I'm sorry but my 75 year old mother needs a comfortable seat, not a stool! So we sat outside, which was fine... then I looked at my messages and got a note from OpenTable saying my reservation had been cancelled by the restaurant at 6:27 PM!! The fact that you all are now sending me a request to tell you about my meal is doubly surprising.
Food was delicious, variety of drink options. Waiter, Ziek, was lovely! Great experience! Will definitely be back.
A vegan, an omnivore and a pescatarian walk into a bar in Hamilton Heights... the punchline? Harlem Grange is passable for a vegan to enjoy drinks and dinner with two non-vegan friends. Not liking gin and the spicy rum drink being 'out,' my choices from the specialty cocktail menu were Granny's Apple and Granny's Apple. My husband had a Dogfish brew, a variety he hadn't tried before, and our friend had an aged bourbon on the rocks. With dinner, M. and I opted for wine, a cabernet and a garnacha, respectively. Hubby had another Dogfish. Starters were so-so. The king oyster/trumpet mushroom was salty and chewy. My omnivore friend picked the peppers. Mains were very good we all agreed. I ordered the BBQ cauliflower 'steak' and chick pea dish; it does not appear on the OpenTable menu. My dining companions both ordered the swordfish and were pleased with the texture, moistness and flavor. Our meal ended with bread pudding and coffee for my husband while M. and I finished our wine and reminiscing. Service was satisfactory. Our server was patient to a point with delay or indecision on ordering. The point where she asked "Do you need more time?" arrived sooner and the time she granted us grew longer at each subsequent stage of our meal. We took this in the fun spirit of the evening and had a good laugh about it.
Great meal. Great service. Reasonable prices. We love the place.
Your food is inventive, tasty, consistent and always truly enjoyable. The service is friendly, sensitive, observant, and not intrusive. Really enjoy The Grange
The drinks were different and very good. Our waitress was excellent. The steak salad was very good, but the sweet potato fries were average at best.
Delicious food and great vibes
Amazing food- the steak salad was the best I’ve ever had. Excellent value for quality and extremely cute interior
The food was very good, much better than the last time we were there a few years ago. And the service was outstanding. We had a lovely evening and will be back sooner than we have in the past.
Creative drinks and excellent food in a comfortable environment. Definitely coming back!
The experience was amazing. I will definitely be going back!! Everyone was so nice, the food was delicious!
Very well done food with a very good vibe
I enjoy coming back to my old neighborhood and seeing how it has changed. The staff here are friendly and attentive without being overbearing. Noise level is somewhat loud but not unmanageable. Overall good time and I will return.
The noise level is a bit challenging...when out with friends I want to talk to them, not shout. The restaurant was also VERY warm, not sure if there's a way to get some air in the back towards where the kitchen is but it did get quite uncomfortable. We were seated in the back and there was a very strong smell of restaurant cleaning fluid, not sure what was going on but it got really overwhelming as the evening went on. We love the Grange and will go back but, this trip was not the most positive of experiences...
I go to The Grange frequently (maybe too frequently) because it’s one of the only spots that excels in food AND drinks. T
Great neighborhood haunt. They change up their menu almost seasonally, but in living around the corner for 2 years, I've never had a bad dish. Ever. Also, next mf level grilled cheese. Do yourself a favor and get it as a starter.
Always a wonderful beer selection and a delicious menu. Waitstaff is attentive, friendly and helpful.
Had a very good experience. Waiter recommended the lamb burger and it was outstanding!
This is our go-to spot in the neighborhood. The servers are always super friendly and attentive and the food is consistently great.
Just alittle too loud perfect otherwise
Fantastic food, scallops were perfect, cooked just right and delicious, great accents. Restaurant was very busy but staff was on it and attentive, and friendly. Tables too small and too close together. Not a good place to put your coats. Come on, its winter in NYC, people have coats, scarves, and bags. One should not have to sit on them or wear them to have a nice dinner.
A wonderful Valentine’s Day experience! What’s with all the people in suspenders though. It really kept me in “suspense” ha ha ha. Seriously though this place rocks! Yes I said rocks because I’m 13.
The service was amazing. I have a gluten intolerance and even though there weren’t many options the server was very helpful in finding ways for chef to accommodate my dietary needs. The food was amazing!!!
It was my husbands birthday. We have been here a number of times and always enjoy!
Great atmosphere. True neighborhood gem. Food was eclectic and delicious. Service was kind and friendly.
Loved the Goat Cheese Dip appetizer and the Brisket Burger!
Excellent food and service. Warm and welcoming ambiance. Very comfortable.
