The Good King Tavern
Every dish was delicious! And the drinks were outstanding!! We will definitely be back!
Appetizers and entrees were creative and delicious. The noise at the bar right next to our table was a bit distracting though. Too bad!
Visitors from NYC we’re getting in late on a Friday and I needed to find a restaurant convenient to my Queen Village home that served food at 10pm.
Good King was the perfect choice: great cocktails and eclectic beer selections, good burgers and a few healthier choices, all in a quaint neighborhood setting.
Service was indifferent, food was not a good value, expensive and not very tasty.
What a great find! I have never had duck so good, and my boyfriend who is not a duck fan even loved it. Good wines and very knowledgeable team. Schnitzel and accompanying sauce was incredible. I will go back next time I’m in Philly.
Loved our waiter. Was very knowledgeable and attentive.
Neighborhood gem! I was in Philly for one night from out of town and found The Good King through Eater. What a perfect choice! From the music (80s punk/new wave) to the service (our server was impeccable - super knowledgeable, offered great recos) to the FOOD (the chicken! the grits! the cauliflower app was ohmygoodness!) to the crème brulee (I have to call this perfection out in a class by itself). Loved everything about it!
This little place seems to try to be playing hide and seek. The sign is just their logo, a cut-out of a crown that reminds me of the one worn by the boy in "Where the Wild Things Are." Locals know where it is and frequent it. We took a table outside. The food is not tavern fare. While they call it French inspired, there are a lot of other inspirational influences. My wife and I lived in France for three years. Finding food this wonderful was not the norm, and certainly food this wonderful didn't hide behind a name with Tavern in it. We and a friend of ours decided to just sample dishes. It was a great move. Each dish showed inventiveness. The memory of the mussels with coconut, French curry and Anise makes my mouth water. The raclette was like none we had ever had in France or Germany. It was so much better. Sunchokes. Mmmm. The little puff pastries, mmmmm again and again. Three hours of mmmmm. I should perhaps keep this place a secret so there is a table available next time we go. This shy little hideout is worth seeking out. Life is good, Bob
Excellent cocktails, oysters, chicken-fried rabbit, eggplant, Arctic char, and acorn squash fritters. The wine list is all organic. We had a delicious white Burgundy from Domaine Paul Pillot. Waiter was very knowledgeable and friendly. An assortment of locals and out-of-towners, young and old, were enjoying a beautiful Friday evening in this exceptional establishment.
Best rabbit outside of Quebec city.
We really enjoyed our experience at the Good King Tavern. Cool relaxed vibe. Excellent food & service! We hope to return soon.
Enjoyed the house burger & schnitzel, and tried a few cocktails. All was delicious.
Always solid. Took my pops here and enjoyed the food and the ambiance. Drinks always solid. Food good and buttery as one would expect from mid-high French cuisine. Wait staff attentive, polite, and put together.
Love this little French bistro. Always great chalkboard specials to compliment the regular menu. We eat here several times a month. The rabbit is delicious, innovative tarts, nice salads and the duck of the day always excellent
The Good King Tavern is consistently excellent in its dishes, service, and ambiance. We love coming here as a treat after busy workweeks, and, if we are lucky and the weather is right, we try to snag a table outside. Inside is just as cozy, of course, but The Good King Tavern is located on one of the nicest blocks for sidewalk outdoor seating in Philly. The food here is always delicious and they have a consistently interesting and surprising drink menu as well. Their Steak Frites is the best I’ve had outside of France!
Excellent meal and great service
I love Good King. That is all.
Great casual bistro food. The mussels are excellent, rivaling the mussels at Parc. Friendly service. starters are very generous. My husband's steak frites was perfectly rare.
The drinks were great, the food was good, and the service was unskilled.
I generally do not write bad reviews. However, I emailed the restaurant privately to let them know about the particulars of the service and did not receive a reply.
I would recommend looking else where. There are too many great options in the area to spend money on bad service.
A short wall from our home. Excellent food! We had the grilled lettuce salad and the scallops. Service was friendly. We will be regulars.
Went to The GOod King Tavern with my husband and son. Had a very nice experience. Food was great, service was great. Would definitely go back.
It was a bit pricey but the food and service was excellent.
Consistently outstanding food. One of the best restaurants in the city and we eat out regularly.
Great service but disappointed in burger and pate bronzino was good burger and fries too salty
We went to Good King for a celebration. This was our 3rd visit. My husband had the steak frites and the steak was cooked perfectly for him-medium well. The branzino over lentils was delicious. The filet was delicious, very moist. My son who chooses duck whenever he eats out, thoroughly enjoyed it. The wine list was extensive and when I had a hard time choosing our server suggested a wine I had never tried and it was delicious-light and fruity just as she had described it. We went for an early dinner and the only thing about GKT is the noise level. I didn't expect it to be quite so noisy so early. However, the restaurant is a great local place that serves great food at reasonable prices so we will be back.
I would recommend Good King, but hesitate only because it would bring more traffic to that part of town and less chance of ME getting parking space so that we could eat there! Apps were the squash barbajuan for me and escargot for my husband. He doesn't eat squash and I don't eat snails, but we would both have been happy to share the other's appetizers, they were that good. I could eat the escargot sauce all by itself and may do that once or twice. I had the beef tartare and compare every tartare to that of Chef Calmels from Bibou - it passed the test. My husband had the duck confit and salted potatoes and left nothing on his plate. Service was excellent and we look forward to going back often (as long as we can find a spot to park!).
The menu was very limited so we opted for the burgers which turned out to be very average.
On a very cool April night, recently, the Good King Tavern was a comforting, welcoming place to visit. Food was excellent. I tried some nicely cooked and spicy duck wings for an appetizer and an especially hearty French variation on Shepherds Pie
They had a very excellent Spanish cider on hand
Would gladly return
The staff were friendly and professional
I went to this place on a recommendation for their wine list, and was very much pleasantly surprised. I’m not usually the biggest fan of whites, but the one that was recommended to me went perfectly with my food, and was incredible. Worth the trip.
Really just a note of caution not criticism, their Sunday menu really has nothing to do with brunch. Only an omelet special, but if it is breakfast/brunch things you want (eggs, french toast etc., this is not the pace. It is also fairly pricy.
We love everything about the GKT. Food, service, wine, spirits, atomosphere are always spot on! Wish there was at GKT in our neighborhood! (Chestnut Hill/West Mt. Airy) We would meet friends and eat there all the time! (hint, hint) : )
Shining example of a restaurant rocking a relatively limited menu - it's always best when a chef keeps it simple, makes every ingredient sing and knocks each dish out of the park. Everything was delicious; I'm still dreaming about the roast chicken and grits!
Best French bistro period.
We really liked the tavern and the area. Help were excellent and friendly. Would have liked a larger food selection for dinner. Bar snacks and appys were very good. Great place for cocktails and small meals.
Love this place! Great food and drinks. Our server seemed a bit exasperated that we didn't order more and took some time to decide. Nothing that would stop us from returning!
Very good food, nice server and atmosphere
Quaint, quirky neighborhood place with funky music, great service, tasty, inventive cocktails and a fab wine list. All that being said, you need to come here for the food! Some of the best French fare I've had outside of France. Everything we had from the escargot to the foie gras to the parmentier was exquisite. If you love French food and you're in Philadelphia, you must try GKT for dinner.
It was ok except that the steak frites were disappointing to me. The frys were good but the steak had no taste. I mentioned it and they did not charge for that dish so I left a large tip.
Fantastic food and service! Hostess was very accommodating for our stroller and waiter was very knowledgeable and helpful with the menu. Great overall experience
Creative menu, excellent wine list and a great value
