The Good King Tavern
This restaurant is just lovely
If u can get passed the typical nonsense of having to deal with South St than it’s worth the trip. Our food was Delicious. The place is not a romantic restaurant but a good go to when you want a great meal with fair pricing. Service was friendly and prompt. Definitely going back!
Very loud atmosphere. Food was great - one of the best burgers in Philly!
Loved this gem; small & intimate, casual feel with interesting, inventive menu and great approach to the wine list. Our server was well-versed, food was great and we enjoyed some unexpected finds in wine. Perfect for date nights or small group of friends.
Definitely in our top 15 all time dining experiences
Everything was great! Would recommend to anyone. Very nice wine list and great French bistro menu
Nice experience. Great flavor, better than just a regular south philly restaurant.
Sat outside on a warm Saturday evening. Wonderful attentive service. Had small plates, mussels perfectly steamed in a fennel broth, exotic roasted Brussel Sprouts in a harrisa aioli, less successful fritters, bright, fresh grilled asparagus salad with 6” eggs(really good). Will return.
Such a fortune to have this restaurant in Bella Vista. Sublime food, a sophisticated wine list, and joy.
A little disappointed with the quality of this place.
It’s always the best idea to go to Good King
We were very thankful that the weather was perfect on the evening we dined here, as the noise level inside was "energetic" to say the least. Our server was very knowledgeable and helpful in our selections for the cheese plate, main courses and the wine.
The food is always great, as are the cocktails and the music!
Very nice, laid back place with really good food. And good wine - the red was served nice and cool!
On a pleasant enough evening, outside dining is peaceful and preferable. Service is friendly and attentive, drinks are very good, everything was good. Interior can be noisy, though less than many spots. During colder seasons, we like to go for an early dinner because we care about noise levels.
The Good King Tavern is a wonderful little spot to have dinner. The food is wonderful with delicious sauces. The mussels were my favorite!
Friends in town
As always, The Good King was everything a good restaurant is. Amazing food, service and drinks. Perfectly executed food and cocktails with one of the best wine lists in the city! Thank you Good King!
Wow, what a find, it's been here all along but I just found it. Really good food, excellent drinks and service all in a casual atmosphere. What else can you ask for? Can't wait to go back.
The food was just ok, and a little pricey for what you get. I had the steak frites and my husband the duck breast. My steak came out cold. I did not ask for it to be re-heated because we were hungry and I didn't want my husband's food to get cold. My husband said his duck breast and duck pate were very good. Overall the meal was good but not great. This was my first visit here and I was disappointed after reading all of the good reviews. Not sure if I'll be back soon, too many other good restaurants to try.
I would recommend The Good King Tavern as a neighborhood place although a tiny bit pricey. The hostess and the service were really great. The food - so/so. I did think the mussels were really good with a very flavorful, rich yet mild broth. Worth the try but not a return.
Great and interesting menu with a really good wait staff. And the house wine is good!
I loved the place! The food and service were wonderful. I’d go back again for sure.
Our meal was super salty should have said something. Next time I will.
Food and service were excellent. Service was friendly and attentive. Prices were reasonable considering the hand crafted and creative nature of the food. We would definitely go back
GKT is one of the best places in Philly to enjoy a craft cocktail, great food and one of the most diverse wine lists. The chicken fried rabbit, oysters and steelhead trout were all delicious and perfectly prepared. We tried a variety of wines from their well curated wine list.
The vibe is cool and casual. Owner Chloe Grigri oversees the entire operation and ensures that quality is delivered with every sip and bite.
Every dish was delicious! And the drinks were outstanding!! We will definitely be back!
Appetizers and entrees were creative and delicious. The noise at the bar right next to our table was a bit distracting though. Too bad!
Visitors from NYC we’re getting in late on a Friday and I needed to find a restaurant convenient to my Queen Village home that served food at 10pm.
Good King was the perfect choice: great cocktails and eclectic beer selections, good burgers and a few healthier choices, all in a quaint neighborhood setting.
Service was indifferent, food was not a good value, expensive and not very tasty.
What a great find! I have never had duck so good, and my boyfriend who is not a duck fan even loved it. Good wines and very knowledgeable team. Schnitzel and accompanying sauce was incredible. I will go back next time I’m in Philly.
Loved our waiter. Was very knowledgeable and attentive.
Neighborhood gem! I was in Philly for one night from out of town and found The Good King through Eater. What a perfect choice! From the music (80s punk/new wave) to the service (our server was impeccable - super knowledgeable, offered great recos) to the FOOD (the chicken! the grits! the cauliflower app was ohmygoodness!) to the crème brulee (I have to call this perfection out in a class by itself). Loved everything about it!
This little place seems to try to be playing hide and seek. The sign is just their logo, a cut-out of a crown that reminds me of the one worn by the boy in "Where the Wild Things Are." Locals know where it is and frequent it. We took a table outside. The food is not tavern fare. While they call it French inspired, there are a lot of other inspirational influences. My wife and I lived in France for three years. Finding food this wonderful was not the norm, and certainly food this wonderful didn't hide behind a name with Tavern in it. We and a friend of ours decided to just sample dishes. It was a great move. Each dish showed inventiveness. The memory of the mussels with coconut, French curry and Anise makes my mouth water. The raclette was like none we had ever had in France or Germany. It was so much better. Sunchokes. Mmmm. The little puff pastries, mmmmm again and again. Three hours of mmmmm. I should perhaps keep this place a secret so there is a table available next time we go. This shy little hideout is worth seeking out. Life is good, Bob
Excellent cocktails, oysters, chicken-fried rabbit, eggplant, Arctic char, and acorn squash fritters. The wine list is all organic. We had a delicious white Burgundy from Domaine Paul Pillot. Waiter was very knowledgeable and friendly. An assortment of locals and out-of-towners, young and old, were enjoying a beautiful Friday evening in this exceptional establishment.
Best rabbit outside of Quebec city.
We really enjoyed our experience at the Good King Tavern. Cool relaxed vibe. Excellent food & service! We hope to return soon.
Enjoyed the house burger & schnitzel, and tried a few cocktails. All was delicious.
Always solid. Took my pops here and enjoyed the food and the ambiance. Drinks always solid. Food good and buttery as one would expect from mid-high French cuisine. Wait staff attentive, polite, and put together.
Love this little French bistro. Always great chalkboard specials to compliment the regular menu. We eat here several times a month. The rabbit is delicious, innovative tarts, nice salads and the duck of the day always excellent
