The Glenville Stops Ratings and Reviews
Loved this restaurant! We picked it because it was close to our son's apt in Allston. If we lived nearby, we would be here all the time! (There is NO parking at all.....everything nearby is resident only...big downside if you have to drive there). It has an impressive beer list and a decent wine selection (not a full bar). The decor is absolutely gorgeous and the place is charming. No tv's anywhere, even in the bar. You could come here with a book and stay for the afternoon. The burgers was good, I enjoyed the carrot soup on a cold evening, and our son's friend enjoyed the Moroccan cigars. The chicken confit sandwich was tasty, but I am not a big fan of dark meat....I was expecting a chicken breast. My son had the salmon which he said was a bit soggy. We would come back again, perhaps in nicer weather when we wouldn't mind the walk from our sons apartment!
Found this place randomly online, and walked away from a dinner of four very pleasantly surprised. Tucked away on a back street in Allston, the four of us cruised our way through their small plates, including excellent versions of small-plate standards like Moroccan Cigars and roasted Brussels sprouts but also included gnocchi with pheasant, and morels in creamy pasta. The interior is a mix of art deco with an exposed beam ceiling, each of which would be charming separately but together seemed a little odd. Service was pleasant and timely--my only complaint was the food came quickly & all at once, would have been a little nicer to pace it especially as they weren't packed that night. I hope the restaurant does well!
This is our fourth visit. The first 3 were with our 20 something children and friends who lived in the area and it was a great meal each time (5 to 15 people). This time was with age peers and it was delighful. It is having shared plates with what I would an American/Continental cusine like a Chinese or Spanish restaurant. All the plates were great. The morells with pasta, tenderloin, and gnocci were over the top. Good wine list, great beer selection. Wish they had manhattans! If you want easy parking or do not like to walk from the T, take an uber, lyft, or taxi. It is worth it.
WE love everything about Glenville Stops. Owner and waitstaff are accommodating and knowledgeable. Food is consistently excellent and very well-valued. It's a quiet very comfortable neighborhood place with cuisine that rivals fancier downtown restaurants.
The singular negative is how tough it is to park there, but it's well worth that hassle.
It was excellent overall, food was great, has $1 oysters 5-7p every day, good variety of drinks. The only issue on the night I went was there was no real waiter/waitress, but seemed like an isolated incident. The bartender was working the whole restaurant while training someone, but he wasn't letting the person training do anything, so it took about 15 mins just to put a drink and oyster order in and another 15+ to order our food.
This place is great. The small plates are delicious. We had the salmon poke, was so good. The charred octopus, again perfect. Lamb meatballs, again delicious. The beets and Brussels sprouts were unbelievable. The hard cider list is vast, as are the wine by the glass. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this restaurant. And the prices are reasonable. You have to try it at. You won't be sorry.
We were meeting out-of-town friends and wanted a convenient place that took reservations for a party of a certain size, was moderately priced, had good food (by reviews) and that looked like one could carry on a conversation without needing to yell (especially on a Friday night).
Glenville Stop more than met all criteria. Really pleasant place in a somewhat out-of-the way location. Very good-excellent food and good service. Prices quite reasonable for portion sizes and quality of dishes. Would have no problem recommending Glenville Stop to others.
Only negative was parking. All streets in immediate vicinity of the restaurant are marked "Resident Parking Only". (Found parking on Comm Ave-an easy walk to restaurant.)
1st disappointment -1st order of 1 dozen raw oysters - got 6 on one plate and 5 on the other. Ask the waitress why one plate only has 5, she said it's because, the oysters were big! Also, I looked over the other table and the customer have the same size oysters but she had 6 on her plate! From what I know, a dozen is 12 not 11! Since, the oyster we're just $1 each, I let it go.
2nd disappointment - The toast with the goat cheese and mango dish was so hard that it flies off the plate when you try to cut it!
3rd disappointment - the toast with mushrooms was hard as well.
We ordered other appetizer dishes as well as entree, all were just ok.
Since we were celebrating our wedding anniversary, I didn't want to continue my disappointment so we had dessert elsewhere.
The first time we went here, it was great (as the food was great even though the service we received from our waitress was okay).
This time, the food wasn't as expected and the service has not changed since the 1st time. I reget that I chose this place to celebrate our anniversary.
I don't think I'll go back again.
Very reasonably priced (although small portions) and delicious food. I had the mini filet which was like butter and perfectly cooked. There was a small service mishap which was more than corrected. We were able to reserve seats at the bar which was a nice touch. No cocktails but a good variety of beer and wine.
I had read a number of reviews that raved about Glenville Stops. We were eager to go, and we were not disappointed. The food was fabulous -- very fresh, with the ingredients made in house. SO tasty! A very inventive menu. The space is pleasing, with a good vibe/ambiance. The waitstaff and chef were attentive, and clearly proud of and devoted to the restaurant. Our waiter told us he'd been a patron before he joined the staff. A delightful experience all around!
Wonderful family-run bar with great dining options. A good selection of small plates with some unique twists. The pistachio baklava desert was fantastic with accompaniments ginger ice cream and basil whipped cream. The staff, who I assumed were the owners were very personable, knowledgeable and provided wonderful anecdotes about the dishes they were serving. I would highly recommend this establishment.
Went out for a post-graduation dinner. Food was amazing as always (third time there). The beer variety was also vast and everyone tried something new. The waitress was a bit terse when we were speaking our order, but in prior visits the service was really friendly. In general, its a great gastropub!
We had no idea what to expect from this restaurant. It is located away from most other commercial venues, in a neighborhood setting. Once you walk in, you know that this is a find. The atmosphere, the food, the service, a great bar, really all you could want. We are coming back here for sure!
Rated very highly on opentable and yelp but honestly was pretty "meh." 1/2 dozen oyster special for $6 before 7pm was a great deal however the waitress did not say what types of oysters we had when she put them down nor did we have proper utensils to eat the oysters. Food was decent but won't be dying to come back. Atmosphere is low key neighborhood spot. Don't go out of your way to come here.
We absolutely LOVED Glenville Stops! It's a nice classy joint in the middle of a not-so-classy area. They manage the attract the crowd we want to be around: young professionals, mid-30's professionals, and older wiser folks. The crowd keeps the atmosphere chill and calm yet full of class and buzz. The food was AMAZING!!! We recommend the brussel sprouts and hand made gnocchi. The flavors melt in your mouth no matter what you get. Hands down the best tasting creative and yet affordable food we've had at a gastropub in Boston! DEFINITELY GO!!!
We have been to The Glenville Stops many times. This alone tells you that we enjoy it!
On this visit...an early Friday evening, our service started a little slow. While waiting for our final guest to join us it took at least 10 minutes before we were asked if we would like a drink or appetizer to start. Once we were asked, the service was as we have come to expect.
We started with the drunken goat cheese to share. All of us had a small dinner salad which was very fresh and nicely dressed. For entrees we ordered their burger, the kofta curry, and petite filet. The kofta curry a spicy vegetarian dish was super delicious. If you are in the mood for a burger it never disappoints. The filet was slightly overcooked (ordered medium-well), but still tender and tasty. Next time I will order by color description instead.
We look forward to returning!
