About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Charming
  • Neighborhood gem
Located right in the heart of the town's High Street and Citadel, The George Grill is the restaurant of The George in Rye, one of the finest hotels on the South coast. Our head chef, Oscar, offers you a classic British Grill menu combining his love of charcoal cooking with a Latin twist. The Grill is a firm local favourite and celebrates the best of ingredients and suppliers in the area. At the heart of the kitchen is a wood-charcoal grill, where our kitchen team roast seafood landed that day from fishermen based in Rye Harbour. We also serve Romney Marsh lamb, Aberdeen Angus grass-fed beef and seasonal vegetables from our farmer based in Boughton Monchelsea. Lovingly restored and renovated, this Grade II listed bolt-hole offers a welcoming retreat for design lovers and foodies alike.

This is an excellent venue that has modernized over the years to create an intriguing space with indoor and outdoor dining. The service and food are excellent. I had a Sunday roast and my son had a steak. We had trouble with our journey and were able to re-time the booking without problem. The price, I feel, was perhaps a tad high. Will we be back? Definitely.

The service could improve, we had to wait quite long to have plates cleared and was not asked at all how our meal was!!! Food was ok, but not worth the money. Amazed at the price of a bottle of wine!! And service charger automatically put on the bill, without asking!!

Booked a celebratory lunch. The starters arrived before the drinks, the mains were underwhelming (don’t get the Cesar Salad, it’s all done with store cupboard items), and the sides never arrived. We were not asked if we need more drinks, cause the waiter never came to check up, didn’t get ordered a dessert menu. Weirdly, he never even acknowledged that the sides didn’t arrive. Would have had extra drinks if asked, would have had dessert if offered. So much for a celebratory lunch, I had to apologise to my husband for the choice I had made.

Dear Alex, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. I'm truly sorry to hear that your celebratory lunch with us did not meet expectations. It’s disappointing to learn that the service fell short, from starters arriving before drinks to the lack of follow-up from the waiter, missing sides, and the missed opportunity to offer desserts and further drinks. This is certainly not the experience we aim to provide, and I can only apologise for the lack of attentiveness and care shown during your visit. Your comments regarding the Caesar salad and the overall food quality have also been noted and will be shared with our kitchen and service teams for review. I do hope you’ll consider giving us another opportunity to provide the level of service we’re known for. Warm regards

3 of us had lunch. The George is pet friendly so we had 2 dogs with us. Have to expect to be placed outside of the main restaurant and we were. Absolutely no issue with this. Initial greet and the service were great. Drinks arrived quickly and the food was superb. 2 of us had the lamb and my daughter the mussels. Couple of glasses of red which was v nice. Cider and Bloody Mary to start. Cider awesome and was informed that the BM was a…’really good one’. White chocolate mouse and Catalan cream for deserts. Again, v nice. Will definitely return. The George looks like it is doing a decent trade and so it should be. First class venue.

Dear James, Thank you so much for your lovely message and for taking the time to share such positive feedback. I’m delighted to hear you enjoyed your lunch with us and that you and your two dogs felt welcomed and comfortable — we always aim to make sure all our guests, including the four-legged ones, have a great experience. It’s wonderful to know the service, drinks, and food — especially the lamb, mussels, and desserts — all hit the mark. I’ll be sure to pass on your kind words to the team, especially the bar and kitchen staff. They’ll be very pleased to hear their efforts were so appreciated. We’re very grateful for your support and look forward to welcoming you back to The George again soon. Warmest regards,

It was a disappointing and relatively expensive meal. It was meant to be a celebration with family; we had not met for a long time. Our 'senior' waitress appeared to be completely oblivious to our need to chat and catch up. She came with her order pad three times within three minutes—each time, we said we would call you when we were ready. Cutlery service had her move our hands and arms where she wished to lay the cutlery. Oysters were served on 2 plates one of which [the smaller] was placed in my guests place. I had to explain to 2 waiters that a large order of oysters needed to be served on a trivet. To be fair the waitress brought an upturned basin in the end - but why [when they serve oysters] would they not have the required trivets or at least train staff on the need? It really did feel that the staff were doing the job for the first time. No senior staff appeared in evidence, and for £260+ for four people [1 bottle of wine] it felt like we were in a tourist trap where they wanted to get as much profit not expecting to see their customers again. If this was their objective - then they've achieved it with me!

Dear Tony, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. I was very sorry to read your comments and want to extend my sincere apologies that your recent visit did not meet expectations—especially on what should have been a special and enjoyable family celebration. It’s clear from your feedback that we fell short in both service delivery and attention to detail. Your description of the interaction with your server and the handling of your oyster order reflects a lack of attentiveness and training that we take very seriously. Please be assured that this is not the standard we aim to offer, nor is it reflective of the experience we want any of our guests to have. Thank you again for your valuable feedback. Warm regards,

We had a lovely lunch with really good service. The outside seating is great in the summer.

Dear Jacqui, Thank you so much for your kind words — I’m delighted to hear you had a lovely lunch and enjoyed the service and our outdoor seating. It's always a pleasure to welcome you. I’m very sorry to hear that your friend’s 60th birthday wasn’t acknowledged during your visit. You’re absolutely right — if we ask about special occasions during the booking process, it’s only right that we follow through in person. Please accept my sincere apologies that this detail was missed. I’ll be speaking with the team to ensure this doesn’t happen again. We truly appreciate your continued support and thoughtful feedback. I hope we’ll have the chance to make it up to you both on your next visit. Warmest regards,
