The George and Dragon
We arrived in good time for our 1pm lunch booking on Sunday 16th December 2018 only to find the premises completely closed with a notice on the window to say 'closed until further notice and all bookings had been advised'. We had most definitely not been advised. I sent a message to the landlord/owner who very rudely stated 'checked, message left'. No message had been left in any form! Disgusted that we were let down so badly. Even if it does reopen we will not be customers! Very disappointed and had to find somewhere else for lunch but as it is the Festive Season it was not easy and we had a mediocre meal to say the least.
Excellent food and good value. Enjoyed lunch. Pity only one real ale offered and beer offerings could be better. Highly recommended and would visit and have lunch again
Prior to this dinner, we had already had dinner several times at the George and Dragon in the past few years. But this time was different, service was friendly but sloppy, the wine list has disappeared and the menu is not as creative as it used to be. The food was good, but overall a disappointing experience compared to our previous visits. There must have been a change in management there. Hopefully new management will quickly improve.
Absolutely appalling. Mush vegetables, burnt whitebait starter, tough lamb, dried out Yorkshire pudding. The only thing nice was the roast potatoes!
Food was very good and pleasant staff but waited an age for food when there were few people in dining. Very off putting to have waitstaff hanging around the opening into the kitchen constantly, and visibly handling food with their hands. They didn’t seem to have much to do but chat, but then slow bringing bill and then servicing till. Need to be more professional - pleasant not enough.
Good gastric pub quality food, pleasant and helpful staff. Could not fault it for what it was.
on arrival was told "we only have one pie left we have no 10oz steaks only 8oz" We asked for the wine list and was told "if we wanted white they only had Pinot Grigio, Spanish rioja and one other. No sauvignon blanc -they were waiting for a delivery." I ordered Burger advertised with Fries, salad and slaw. When it arrived there was no slaw. I was told that they didn't have any!
We waited 30 mins from arrival to getting our food . There was a party of 12 making a fair amount of noise, and 3 other tables of 2. If they couldn't handle this ,it is their problem, they shouldn't make it ours!
The only Waitress seemed more interested in talking to the men at the bar than looking after the diners.
Having eat there for over 20 years it is always consistent, good food, reasonably priced with excellent beer, well cared for, and a pleasant atmosphere for anything. Although it has changed hands several times the new custodians somehow recognise what the G&D is all about and maintain it.
Unfortunately we had a really bad experience Tuesday evening. We were on a business meeting meal with external people, who were staying at the Bell hotel, therefore wanted to eat locally. When we arrived bar staff took our drinks order then seated us, it was only when seated we were informed they only had parts of the menu (literally only had half the menu available, didn't even have bread for the soup). Starters were basic but ok, then we waited an hour and half for our mains to which the waitress apologised before they even hit the table as the chicken was extremely overcooked and was barely edible (they said they wouldn't be charging us for the chicken to which the honoured). Unfortunately we used this place a lot for business meals but I fear we won't be returning after this experience. Such a shame!
Epic portions and speedy service. A great Sunday lunch.
It maintains its standards and the quality and price is good.
We were seated next to the open plan kitchen which had a radio blaring dance music out of it for the benefit of the kitchen staff and not the customers. The kitchen also received several visits from friends giving the impression their attention wasn't entirely on preparing food.
A small vase with a large Lily was on the centre of the table. It was so top heavy it immediately toppled over and drenched the table which was slow to be cleared up. Three of us had the pigeon, it was so dry and overcooked it was near on impossible to cut, one of my companions left a large amount of her pigeon and complained to the waitress who didn't react at all. The main course was slightly better but not much.
Very poor experience and disappointing.
My meal was perfectly cooked & beautfully presented. The service was friendly & efficient.
Went for dinner with my children, one of which has a nut and egg allergy. Chef couldn’t have been more helpful, was so helpful and made my little girls welcome. Was an absolutely delicious dinner with friendly service and lovely atmosphere. Will definitely be returning when on holiday in Sandwich.
We kept being forgotten. It took three asks to get a wine list so the wine didn’t arrive until after we had started our main course. The starter of king prawns was swimming in butter and not very tasty. The steak was good but the accompanying chips were horrible. The panna cotta was rubbery. Not good!
We have been visiting George and Dragon for a number of years and it is very sad to write this review but the experience was terrible in every sense and was shared by a number of other diners who walked out refusing to pay for the food or being fed up waiting to order their food. It began when my wife ordered Tiger prawns to find the size of the prawns that arrived being the size of a ten pence piece and when pointed out to the waiter was told that the chef had told him that the shells had been taken off. This laughable comment just compounded the issue. The next more serious problem was when ordering the lamb the waiter asked how I wanted the lamb cooked and instead of red and rare the meat arrived a dreadful grey colour with zero taste . No vegetables apart from overcooked potatoe . We finally ordered expressos and these were slapped down with no offer of sugar.
First visit here but would definitely revisit. I understand that this was the chef’s second day and we were extremely impressed by the quality of the food. The crab cakes were fantastic and the steak cooked to perfection. Well worth a visit.
Disappointing, we expected much better! When we arrived the restaurant was relatively empty. We were shown to our table, given menus and left for a short while to consider our choices. After a few minutes we were asked if we would like drinks, we placed our order and were served quite quickly. With little delay, the waiter then returned to take our food order. So far so good! About this time other guests began to arrive, including a large party who had preordered their food, and things started to go downhill. There were only 3 serving staff, one manning the bar, a waiter and a supervisor. With the number of guests now in the restaurant they simply could not cope. We were lucky in that we had ordered before the rush so we simply had to wait for our food to arrive - we had ordered mains with no starters and it took around 45 minutes to come, not particularly speedy but ok. During this waiting time and whilst we were eating the waiting staff were getting very stretched and other guests were becoming upset waiting to get served, so much so that at one party walked out in frustration. The atmosphere became tense and was not particularly conducive to us having an enjoyable time. We were quite lucky in getting our mains cleared and desserts ordered and delivered within a reasonable time given the pressure the staff were under. Whilst we were having the meal the chef and 2 of his assistants walked out of the kitchen and through the restaurant on 2 occasions to go outside to the front of the building, presumably to have a smoke. This did not give a very good impression to those dining! Our experience of the food was mixed, we thought the desserts were delicious but the mains disappointing. Two of had steaks and one of us lamb rump. All these meats, although nicely cooked to our tastes (rare, medium, etc) we found them to be very, very tough.
A kind welcome, good service and beautiful food. Imaginative flavourings, cooked to perfection. All freshly prepared (and you can watch them doing it if you sit in the dining area. Well kept wine and ale. Pretty courtyard if you fancy outdoor eating.
we enjoyed our lunch, the food was tasty and there was a good ambience . We waited a long time for the main course but it was Father's Day and the pub was very busy, lots of people arrived about the same time. We were disappointed with the wine as the Rioja Reserva we ordered was not available. The recommended Valpolicella was just not as good ! We have been several times before for lunch on weekdays and we will come again. Thank you
A great meal at a reasonable price in a lovely setting.
Excellent for our family reunion. Not too noisy ,despite the pub being full . So could have a decent conversation. Whitebait not quite what I expected.
Yes we had a very enjoyable meal, the food was first class. We will definitely go again.
This is our favourite restaurant since we moved to Thanet, and it still does not disappoint. (Even when their is a hitch in the card reader!) The food was top class and cooked to perfection, although the fresh peas were a little undercooked for my taste, but not for wifey. Our guests from Glos. were very satisfied. Only complaint was half audible music from the kitchen clashing with half audible music from the bar. My policy was always no music from the kitchen so as not to disturb the cooks' concentration.
2 x Chicken Supreme with Gnocchi: gnocchi was very doughy and undercooked inside. Meant to be with a Salsa Verdi...didn’t seem to be any.
1 x steak ordered medium / rare....came out later than the rest of the food and was nearly blue. Sent back to be cooked more, by that time everyone else finished.
1 x glazed pork belly - all good!
Good food and quick service
Good service from staff and good price
The reason I gave only 4 stars for the service is because I felt the kitchen staff were a bit off key on this rather slow-for-customers lunchtime. But, we love this restaurant because it is, above all, honest in what it does and what it is, and they know the meaning of service; it has to hit just the right note.
The kitchen has now found its feet after the change over. Overall, our food was good. One rather tough pheasant leg in an otherwise excellent main of local pheasant let the side down somewhat.
The atmosphere is lovely, relaxed, easy and a good mix of people, it’s a good place to eat and enjoy.
Spent the evening celebrating a birthday. Good food. Good service. Relaxed surroundings. An enjoyable evening was had by all. Would highly recommend.
Have visited in December and shocked at the change. Place was deserted and food not nearly as good as previously eaten. Only positive was the service which was friendly and efficient but given the number of diners not surprising.
Have no idea what has happened but will not return until changes are made.
Absolutely superb. Came for the father in laws 70th. Arrived earlier in the day and dropped off balloons and the cake. Staff were friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Came back for dinner and we were seated at the back of the restaurant adjacent to the 3 chefs and their kitchen. There were 9 of us and the noise level was probably of our own making! The food was delicious and as good as pub fine dining gets. I had the crab starter followed by the pork belly. Others had the venison and sea bream. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their choice. Tucked away just 2 mins from centre (the Bell) but we'll worth seeking out when visiting Sandwich.
Nice atmosphere and good quality food
Great dinner - very nice menu. Rather generous portions - could not manage dessert!
Visited this lovely restaurant after enjoying the experience a few weeks before and we really enjoyed the dinner with creative food and lovely wine list . The whole evening was complimented by wonderful service from the waiters. The owner is making a tremendous effort to develop the restaurant into a fine dining experience in Sandwich and they are well on the way to achieving their aim
Service was very good, with polite and efficient staff.
The restaurant was very cold (I kept my coat on all night) which spoiled the evening for me. We were advised by the waitress to choose a table on the side of the restaurant with the radiators - so they are aware that the temperature is an issue - and it didn't make any difference!
Main meal was fine, although a very limited choice on the menu, but the chips were awful, and on a menu with fairly high prices, having to pay for them as a side dish seems over the top. Good dessert, but overpriced.
Wouldn't eat there again.
I’ve dined here before on 3-4 occasions and the food has always been very good. Unfortunately the standard is just not as high as it was previously. The service was very warm and welcoming but the quality of the food is just not the same.
We had the misfortune to arrive immediately following a very late (in the day) Environmental Health inspection. The staff were very apologetic - being transparent and informing us in advance that there would be inevitable delays in our meal as the kitchen had not been able to do the necessary prep work.
So yes, food took a while to arrive but when it did it was well presented, well cooked and tasty and we were not charged for our drinks.
I would happily eat there again - but would probably check the menu first as options were a little limited and unless they change frequently you might end up being even more constrained if you wanted to try something different.
Friendly staff but limited (unusual) menu choices - in the region of 6 options plus 2 specials. The website indicates bar menu available and this is not the case. However, the chef did make a change to the menu to cater for my needs and the food was good when it arrived. Usually this restaurant is fully booked but there were a couple of spare tables - unusual for a Saturday night. We understand there has been a change of management.
Had visited the George and Dragon for the first time a month ago after a long gap and clearly the new owners have already made great strides to provide Sandwich with a great eating place . Service is friendly and excellent while wine list has some interesting selections . Food was a mixture of quality with the starters really excellent in flavour but main courses surprisingly lacked seasoning although contents were good. Selections of cheeses were outstanding . Will return soon
First time here since the new owners took over 7 weeks ago. Very disappointed to find that the menu on offer was completely different from the one on the web site. That said we could not fault the food on offer. The staff nice enough but lacking experence. Not offered water . Plates passed across to you. Told mind there hot !. No coffee at the end and had to go and find someone so we could pay our bill. The place looks very tired now.
