Fabulous for before or after Theatre (Goodspeed Opera House). Solid dinner menu and reasonably priced. Quaint small town atmosphere, on the river, photogenic, romantic, convenient.
Good good and good service. A party of 70 came in shortly after we did. Our server made sure or orders were in and food delivered before the huge party.
We were going to see a matinee at the Goodspeed Theatre next door, so it was a perfect place to have lunch before the performance.
This was our second time as we always feel every restaurant deserves a second chance. Unfortunately, there will not be a third. The pros are its convenience to Goodspeed and the view. Great building as well with the potential for much greater ambience. The cons are too numerous to list all but let me say that it feels like the restaurant doesn’t make much of an effort and relies on its proximity to Goodspeed to keep it afloat. The food was painfully mediocre with no creativity or thought. The wine list is laughable and the cocktails are a throwback to about 15 years ago. The owners and management could make this a very special place - updating interior would be a good start. Bring in locally sourced food and change up the menu regularly (hire a proper chef who could do this!). If you are over 80, you’ll love this place. For all others, look elsewhere.
Great food and service.
A good place to go before the show at The Goodspeed. Although a little pricey, the menu had a good amount of choices and both our meals were nicely-prepared. We both had the glazed salmon; the portion size was good, and they were both cooked as requested. The dessert menu sounded good, but we were pretty full after dinner and 2 cocktails each.
We've been to the Gelatin House for lunch several times when we were going to the Goodspeed Opera House. Food is always very good, lots of diners, and everybody seems happy. A lot of elderly people for the matinees...and I have brought my mother and friends of hers and they always had a wonderful time.
Beautiful setting. Nice variety on menu. Salads are beautiful and delicious. Very pleasant and consistent.
The resturant was over sold, had theater tickets at 8 O'Clock, got there at 6:30.
Waited 15 minutes for a table in the lobby. Then waited another 15 minutes for a
server. Got dinner at 7:40. Food was not good. This is not the first time this has
happened. Not good customer service.
I had not been to the Gelston House restaurant or The Goodspeed Opera House since the 70's. I was so happy both of these beautiful, historic buildings were still here! You just can't beat the view of the CT River, very nice luncheon!
Enjoyed a nice lunch on the patio before attending Oklahoma! at the Goodspeed Opera House. It was a beautiful day, the view was outstanding. Food was good, service was okay, they were short handed and the two folks taking care of the patio did the best they could.
We had a nice dinner prior to seeing Oklahoma at the Goodspeed Opera House. Very convenient for the evening. Great view of the Connecticut river.
Our lunch was excellent as was the service. We were not rushed although it was a busy pre theatre time. We are planning to return in November before the next show!
We eat here when we are going to a Goodspeed matinee. The food is good but we order simple lunch food, sandwiches, etc. The service tends to be very good and the setting is grand. It's not a first class restaurant but it's very nice for a lunch before theater.
The Gelston House is so convenient to Goodspeed Opera House which is a great way to wait out the departing crowds. Food is good although nothing really special. Dining outside overlooking the river is wonderful.
Had a very nice lunch, with a beautiful view of the CT river. Food was very nice, fresh, hot, and tasty.
Very good food reasonably priced. Excellent location on the Connecticut river next to Godspeed Opera House. Great for pre-show dinner or after show cocktails and entertainment. A Connecticut landmark.
The short ribs were marvelous, and the portions very generous. We skipped dessert, but it looked good. We liked the convenience for pre-theater dining and appreciated the ample parking. The only minus was that we chose seats (inside) next to what turned out to be a very loud table (the only one in the restaurant!), but we would go back again for dinner and perhaps try the al fresco tables.
Abysmally slow and inattentive waitress
Food was almost as bad....wife and I each ordered off the prix fixe menu
Shrimp cocktail was good but only 3 shrimp ea not the 4 were told
Surf and turf was some good grilled shrimp but accompanied by school cafeteria tenderloin with a gravy that was gross....I asked for a new plate sans gravy, marginally better with some overly creamy horseradish sauce.
The other entree was fresh pasta with a bolognese sauce....the sauce was good but the pasta was so over cooked it was like mush. When we complained we were told that chef said that all fresh pasta is that way.
I respectfully disagreed but said I did not want to get into an argument with the chef and asked the waitress to just take it away.
A few minutes later a plate of perfectly cooked al dente pasta bolognese was presented ....it was very good but why did we have to fight for it?
The included dessert was cafeteria quality chocolate mousse.
I do not think we will return here as the $111+ after tax & tip was absurd....oh that included 1 draft beer . I had to send back the 1st as it was flat and get a different brand!
Food was good but not exceptional. Service a little slow. Servers not very attentive.
Food, service, ambience, and view of the CT. River all first rate. Conveniently located right across from the Goodspeed Opera House where we had tickets for the show that evening. It was a superb way to begin the evening. We had a grand time!
Place is really special and dining room menu looked interesting. Ordered duck pâté but was told they were out (at 5:30pm). Ordered wedge salad (very good) and fried dumplings (average). Others ordered Tagliatelle with Bolognese. Sauce needed seasoning and was served over a fettuccine or linguini, not tagliatelle. Beef stroganoff was also bland and seemed to lack sour cream. Just meat with very little sauce over egg noodles. Amish chocked arrived a full 5 minutes after the other entrees and the fresh vegetables (green beans and carrots) were nearly raw and far too hard to eat with utensils. Had to ask for water 3 times. Convenient for theatre. Not a dining experience I'd repeat.
Food was not up to the Gelston House usual standards. We all had Priced fixed meals but were charged for out dessert and coffee which had to be removed.
downright terrible from start to finish. despite lovely view of the river, dining room has a musty moldy odor. the dining room was fairly empty when we arrived for lunch before a show and there were already a number of items they were out of. Service was slow and imprecise and food was inedible (beef stroganoff, and salad with grilled salmon ordered rare--came extremely well done and tasteless). will not be back.
Waiter was terrible. Bread didn't come until salad was almost gone even though we asked for it earlier. When the waiter cleared our table after dinner he knocked over a glass of water. He said he was sorry and continued on his way and left my friend to soak up the water with a napkin. When he came back to the table he never brought a fresh tablecloth as we had requested he do. We were looking forward to having after dinner drinks but with a wet tablecloth we decided to leave. I regret that I didn't ask to see the manager. What was suppose to have been a nice evening turn out terrible. He was one of the worst waiters I have encountered in many years.
comment; crab cakes good; had to ask for bread. should be offered. the salad was a disappointment; a dish of spinach leaves with a few cranberries. you ask alot of money; should be a better salad. our waiter Matt was wonderful. i would go again, please attend to the salad. a few walnuts would have been welcomed. sak66
Beautiful building and location. Good service, good food, extensive menu. Perfect for before or after theater at Goodspeed Opera House.
Excellent service from wait staff, who demonstrated excellent teamwork. Good food.
The salads contained canned olives and beets. The cocktails were terrible. The coffee was very weak, and everything was expensive. Seems like they have a captive audience with the proximity of the opera house and so they don't have to try very hard.
Very good food - very good service! We will be back!
It was a special place 20 years ago but I think the carpet is that old. We came for anniversary dinner pre-show amd that was a mistake. Wait staff kept bumping wife squeezing behind her chair. I finally moved table closer to me to provide more room. Chairs were uncomfortable, worn out antiques. Service was slow and inattentive. Appetizers were ok but Scampi was drowned in some unrecognizable sauce with overcooked rubbery pasta. We won't be returning.
It's always nice at the Gelston House, the food is very good and the wait staff is excellent. We were there for lunch, as we were going to the Goodspeed Opera House. the staff is very accommodating, for example, we were almost a half hour late but it was no problem😊
The food was excellent, and the staff was superb. Nothing beats sitting out on the deck on a nice summer day.
It was a great dinner and we had more enough time to make it to the show.
Nice spot for a meal before or after a performance at the Goodspeed Opera House. Hostess was somewhat abrupt. Pleasant meal, excellent gin & tonic, terrific waitress.
I ordered the lobster shrimp scampi over fettucine. Literally, no lobster at all...not even one tiny pinhead speck of lobster. I complain to our waitress Jordan who shrugs her shoulders and says she doesn't know why there is no lobster. So I ask her to maybe have the chef come out and explain why 1/3 of the ingredients were missing from the dish. This would have been easy for the chef to do since there was literally not one other table of diners at 6:15 PM on Father's Day 2017. We wait....and wait.....and wait some more. Finally Jordan comes back and says the chef doesn't know why there is no lobster in the dish either but he will send up a bowl with some lobster in it. Really?? Can he send up a pan, a stove, and some butter to heat it all up again? Jordan leaves, we just chuckle, and decide I can't wait any longer to eat so my date and I start eating. Just as I'm finishing my shrimp and pasta, Jordan pops up with another entire bowl of fettucine with some shrimp and specks of lobster meat. Why? Am I supposed to eat 2 meals now? I can't take it with me because I'm traveling.
I'm easy. If you make a mistake admit it and move on. Yes the chef is probably inexperienced or incompetent or both but to miss putting lobster in a lobster based dish? I can't tolerate people not accepting responsiblity for their mistake and then bringing me a bill for the full amount of a screwed up dinner....no "sorry", no offer of a free coffee, nothing. This place needs a new dining room manager and a new look at customer service.
So disappointed. We had a reservation (which apparently was uncommon ?). When we arrived we went to the patio hostess, as we wanted to sit outside on such a gorgeous day. When we told her we had a reservation, she was confused and sent us inside to the hostess there, who then informed us that, if we wanted to sit outside, we needed to go to the patio hostess. We picked a terrible table to sit at. The number of bugs literally falling off the tent that covers the patio was crazy (albeit it was a breezy day). We ordered 2 adult beverages and 3 waters. Within minutes, 4 of the 5 drinks had either a bug or twig pieces/leaves in them. It was so bad we were literally about to ask to go sit inside (which looked gorgeous and completely empty). We are from the South, where outdoor dining is the norm. It had rained the day before; so, of course, the patio was wet. But it was as if they hadn't swept it prior to opening for the day. We literally had a muddy puddle under one of the seats. The food started to come out. It was honestly such a let down. We ordered chicken tenders for our daughter. I'm not sure if it was just left over chicken that had been refried, but I don't think I've ever tasted chicken like that before. Both of the adult's entrees were pretty terrible, as well. I only took one bite of mine. My husband only ate a small amount of his. I would compare the food to Applebees. So sad. It looked so promising.
Our experience at The Gelston House was not good. The hostess who seated us was not friendly, the man who took our drink orders made mistakes, he later returned with more drinks, but never offered us water or removed the empty glasses. One of us had to take the empty glasses to the bar to make room. We probably had close to seven different servers, yet it was, without a doubt, the most disorganized and haphazard service I've ever seen. It was unclear who our waiter really was. The food was mediocre. The water view was beautiful. This place needs better management.
Beautiful location, great wait staff. Only downside was wait staff was not informed that salad dressings had all been dropped and broken. Each time we tried to order a different salad she would come back and apologize that the dressing was unavailable. Communication from kitchen/manager to wait staff was lacking. Other than that, we enjoyed ourselves.
Our waiter enjoyed providing good service. His smile added to our meal's enjoyment.
