The Gelston House
spectacular setting with a view of the Connecticut River. Exquisite Cuisine and excellent service.

** Please note that on Monday's we do not accept reservations, it is a first come first serve basis
**Monday's we are only open OUTSIDE
Always a lovely spot for pre theater lunch. Fried eggplanat sticks are to die for! Light and scrumptious. Portions are very generous. Lobster roll is delicious. With two lobster rolls and a huge pile of french fries per serving, this is ideal for sharing. Our group never has room for dessert, but the cakes look yummy and also perfect for group sharing. I will return here whenever I am in athe area.
Our server was EXTREMELY nice and accommodating, making sure every aspect of our dining experience was good. This is a very positive sign, because in the past many of our servers have not been as competent.
It was a beautiful day and we enjoyed lunch on the outdoor patio. Food was delicious. I had a short rib and cheese and caramelized onion sandwich that was excellent. I wish I had one now.
The Gelatin House was wonderful. The food was excellent, and the service was outstanding.
Great atmosphere and service but the food for all six of us was very disappointing.
Outside dining was wonderful. We went for lobster rolls but they were not available. That was the only disappointment.
Loved the chicken avocado salad . Great dressing. The view is great and it was perfect to eat there before a show at the Goodspeed.
We got the pre-fixed meal. It was alright but nothing great. We ate there a year ago and the food was fantastic. I don’t know if they have a different chef but....
Beautiful view of the Connecticut River and an excellent meal before going to see a show at the Goodspeed. Our server was friendly and attentive, and the meal was quick and delicious. I highly recommend the crab cake appetizer and the beet salad! Will definitely be back!
Location ideal for going to a show at Goodspeed. However food was marginal, the service marginal and fruit flies come in the drinks. In the future I will look for another place and plan for a little extra time to avoid this place.
Good food and good service in a beautiful location on the lower Connecticut River
Our children had their wedding reception at Gelston House 4 years ago. We live in Georgia and wanted to bring them back for a vacation. Loved it all over again!
We loved our dinners! Broccoli & cheddar soup was a big hit with our grandson who had the burger. We had the lobster and shrimp scampi. Jennifer was our waitress. We highly recommend that you ask for one of her tables if children are along - and even if it’s just adults!
Excellent service. Food was very good with good selections and lunch appropriate size. Would not hesitate to reccomend to a friend.
Great food. Great ambience. Locale was very cool. Poor service.
Arrived and seated on time at 4:45 in order to make it to Goodspeed for 6:30 curtain time. Service was extremely slow. One of us ordered fixed price meal, but First course salad didn’t arrive until nearly an hour later. Main course on table by 6:00. Yes it was busy, but kitchen way too slow. Wait person very apologetic. There was no time for dessert and coffee as we anticipated. They saved desserts for us and we picked them up from kitchen after the show. Disappointing experience.
Wonderful atmosphere! A true classic American restaurant. We ate on the back patio which was really nice. My only complaint was the music was hard rock which was a bit much!
Very nice to have multiple fish entrees. Also, our table enjoyed very much the Sea Glass Sauvignon Blanc, small splits of Prosecco, and a well-chilled Bombay Gibson! Great "Goodspeed" precursor!
The Gelston House location is beautiful sitting on the CT River. There was a play at the Goodspeed so the restaurant was busy. There were not enough servers on so things were a little slow. For the price of the meals I would say they were fair at best.
Lovely setting. Food wasn’t special. And everything certainly could have been served hotter. Risotto was undercooked and had to be sent back. Bread was white, soft, bland. Dessert mousse sliced very thin. Vegetables overly salty. Waitress was nice enough.
The food was great, the ambience lovely, the view spectacular, the service friendly and accommodating. I highly recommend this place to anybody looking for a good, reasonably priced meal.
This is one of the most consistent restaurants providing excellent food, service and views! We are never disappointed in anything.
The Gelston House is located in the perfect spot, right on the Connecticut River, across the street from The Goodspeed Opera House. That lends to the wonderful eating experience there. We dine there before we attend the show at Goodspeed. We had lamb pops and crab cakes for our appetizers and then the Chilean Sea Bass and Prime Rib for our entrees. Our waiter was excellent and so was the food. The service is excellent - never rushed - but attentive to our needs and also the time frame of getting to the show. This is a restaurant we have visited for years and will continue to do so for years to come.
If you are going to a Goodspeed show, having a meal at the Gelston House won’t be disappointing. Good service and great meal! We’ll do it again!
Our food was delicious and our server was excellent!! We’ll be back!!
Great food and service. And dining outside on the terrace overlooking the river adds to the pleasant ambience.
The food was fine and the staff was attentive.
The proximity to goodspeed is the real draw here and view of the water.
They didn’t have the dessert we ordered and the Parmesan cod could have been better preparered. They also didn’t have good share platters (hummus and crudites ) etc,
Meals cooked to perfection, excellent service and beautiful views of the river. Our server made my daughter feel very special.
After spending a gorgeous day on a boat excursion on the Connecticut River and visiting Gillette Castle, we made dinner reservation at the nearby pricey Gelston House, wanting to impress my Mom, visiting from Europe.
Upon arrival the restaurant was empty, but started to fill up probably with pre-show dinner guests.
My husband asked for the cocktail menu, but was told that there is not one, cause “they are working on it”. So, he ordered a glass of Margarita from the waiter, who made us feel like we are bothering him, but received some kind of a Martini drink in a Martini glass, but that was only the start.
While the venue has beautiful views and nice dining room settings, we have never ever been served worse meals in our lives.
When the meals arrived, we were shocked and insulted by the lack of presentation. Instead of Brazed Short Ribs, what my husband ordered, there was a dubious looking lump of a messy, boiled meat with some kind of a sauce with mashed potato and CANNED GREEN BEANS on the plate.
The Parmesan Crusted Cod Mom ordered was also boiled with absolutely no flavors, the risotto was way overcooked and what was the worst, she had a huge lump of thawed FROZEN CUT SPINACH, probably freshly out of a box on the plate instead of sautéed spinach.
Any my order: the Caesar Salad had croutons and when asked the waiter if they were gluten free, he had to go back to the kitchen to ask. Of course, the croutons were NOT gluten free, even though the menu states “ALL SALADS ARE GLUTEN FREE “.
The “Crab Cakes” I was served were (2) tiny dense cakes (previously frozen) with Kalamata spread on top (!!) and dried mint (!!) sprinkled on. The menu described the Crab Cakes as “Fresh picked lump crab, sriracha aioli “, so not sure what I received.
We only ate the food because were starving by being outdoor all day and quite surprised that none of us got ill from the mess of a food we were served.
Wonderful birthday luncheon for my parents. Service was attentive, food was good and view was beautiful. The hostess honored my request for a table by the window but sadly my other request for a birthday candle in the dessert was not noted. We did get a candle in the end and the creme brulé cheesecake was a big hit.
Very crowded due to show at the Goodspeed but service was good. My fish came out severely undercooked.
The evening was beautiful my waitress was clueless it was as if she had never waitressed before. We arrived at 6pm punctually we didnt get water until 6:20 she took our wine order before getting us water. The pouring of the wine and presentation was not good. She finally came back and took our meal orders at 6:40 we couldnt get eh prefix becasue we would never had time to eat 3 coarses. I had to ask to hurry and put the salad app in at the same time as dinner becasue we were running out of time. The tables next to us I coul hear had to ask for bread. We were right next to the table we had to say can we have bread tool. The bread came but she was making so many trips back and forth so ineffecient. The kitchen brought out he food. I had the baked cod. All I can say the food saved the day the rissotto and cod with a tarragon cream sauce was marvelous. The house salads were fresh and plentiful a bit tangy with vinegar but delicious. The wilted spinach was prepared perfectly that ws part of our entree. We finish our wine and meals and went to the show with 10 minutes to spare it was close. It took a while for everything....tip reflected the service....waitress said she was slammed but the other server in a different area had the same amount of people and seemed to be doing just fine. Love the location and the food will be back this summer for sure!!
Overall pretty good. Not a 5 star restaurant but pretty solid. Cant get a better view on the CT River than here and obviously the best and easiest place to eat before going to a play at The Goodspeed.
Any restaurant that does a great job on Mother’s Day gets extra credit!! food very good, waterfront view very nice
Ate at the Gelston house again for Mother’s Day. Had prime rib, shrimp, carrot cake, and coffeee. Food was great, atmosphere phenomenal and the waiter Adam was fabulous. Can’t wait to go again.
Very convenient as it is by Goodspeed Opera House. The problem is that all theater-goers descend on it right before a play- so it's crowded, loud and busy. But that is not their fault. The food came in a reasonable time, but it was only warm, not hot, and a little to salty. The manager checked on us and I shared that with her. Our waitress was outstanding. We would still go again for location, but if it wasn't theater related, I'm not as sure I'd be back...
First, the online menu, is not at all representative of the actual menu. The online menu had items unavailable and the highest priced item was $19.00. All items on actual menu started over $20.00.
Sea bass was 1/4” thick and served with string beans that were like rubber. The shrimp cocktail was 4 medium sized shrimp that had no presentation to them. The beer was not cold and frosted glass was just above room temp.
We went out to dinner before a theatre show. Very nice meal and affordable wine that was good.
We were early for our reservation but were immediately seated. The service was excellent considering the post/pre theater crowd. We had four people in our party and all were very satisfied with their meals. As a Celiac, I was pleased with the level of knowledge of our server. Added bonus, I didn’t get sick.
Great place to have dinner before seeing a show at the Goodspeed. Lovely old home with gorgeous river views. Nice, varied menu and pleasant service.
