Owned and operated by Chef Phillip Frankland, The Gadarene Swine opened its doors for business in 2014, and is known for its 10-course vegetable-only tasting menu format. Chef Phillip prepares food with the help of his partners David Bowles and Margarita Lee. The restaurant has a spacious interior with wooden tables and chairs, creating a warm and intimate environment for vegans. The bar serves a variety of wines and cocktails and has bar stools around it for customers looking for a drink.
The menu at The Gadarene Swine is all-vegan and offers a variety to customers. Some of its sections include organic vegetables elevated, best when shared, starters, mains and snacks for the table. There are tasting and brunch menus, as well. Customers can enjoy their food in fresh air, as it offers an outdoor seating option. The Gadarene Swine takes reservations, is wheelchair accessible and offers catering services for small gatherings.

The restaurant had closed abruptly. This ruined our planned birthday celebration. Open Table confirmed my reservation so I assumed it was a go. Ha! Joke's on me. We had to scramble to find a replacement restaurant at 8 pm on a Friday night. I sent many people to this restaurant and went several times myself. This chef and his associates are out for me. Also, Open Table is not an effective tool if these kinds of things happen. I assume the chef did not inform you that he was closing his restaurant, again, not considering the diners who had supported the restaurant. Done.
We booked our reservation, unfortunately, after arriving outside the restaurant, a valet informed us that it was closed. (permanently???)
Wish we would have known before driving the trip there. Disappointed.
Such a magnificent place. Unfortunately it was the last day. Partnership issues forced it to close despite a loyal following
Vegetarian nirvana - this was the absolute best meal I've ever eaten anywhere, and I am a food snob who has traveled extensively. We had the tasting menu, and every single dish of the 11 dishes that came out was elaborately prepared with pureed, crisped, steamed, flavored vegetables, fruits, sauces, greens, all done to perfection. My favorite item was the vegetables in a box which had an amazing mango flavor to complement the whole edamame, peppers, squash, and other delights. The coconut pudding with streusel for dessert was another standout. Words can't describe how awesome this meal was.
For those looking for something a little different. Definitely an interesting and delicious take on vegetables. The room is attractive, the service great. The tasting menu seems to be a labor of love. The handmade pasta is still calling me. Highly recommend.
A great dining experience! We started with sake cocktails and a specialty beer, and then our party of three ordered the $40 per person dinner. We were treated to seven delicious dishes (favorites being the cauliflower and the hand rolled pasta) which left us very full and happy. Each course was served family style and brought to the table by various staff members who described the dish to us. Fun evening and delicious treat!
This is an amazing restaurant. The Gadarene Swine provides a first class food experience. I highly recommend this place to anyone who claims to love food.
This was the coolest restaurant we've been to in a long time. Being a 100% veg menu should not be off-putting to anyone. The variety of flavors was very wide - I even ate olives (which I normally strongly dislike) - bit portions are definitely small. This is a restaurant where you have to buy multiple orders and share - which is a good thing.
Our 3 favorites were the "Olive Stuffed Olives", the "Bittergreens Salad", and the Hummus (by far the best I've ever had). And the desserts were great. The orange cotton candy on mine was fun and the "main" dessert underneath was great as well.
We appreciated the server's knowledge and explanations of each serving. This place clearly has trained its employees very well, plus they all seemed to have a truly veg lifestyle type of interest in what they were doing. They acted very committed to this type of diet .... which was really appreciated - no "I'm just doing this for the money" attitude. Refreshing.
This is an absolutely amazing restaurant! The service was phenomenal, the food exquisite, and the ambience A+. We will definitely be back over and over again!!!
Savory vegetarian deliciousness. Left full and very happy. Very friendly service. Can't wait to go back.
We came here for birthday meal for our daughter who is vegetarian and wanted to try somewhere that had vegetables as the main stars rather than the odd vegetarian dish for the non meat eater. We were not disappointed. We had the tasting menu and enjoyed every course.
The food was well presented and every dish was tasty and more filling than you think vegetables can be.
However, we missed bread or something to balance the earthy flavour of the food. Perhaps a potato dish as well, some kind of comfort food ? We felt it would have been a welcome addition.
The restaurant interior was lovely, no harsh lighting, no loud music, conversations were possible, which is a plus these days. Staff were all very good.
A tasting menu at the $40 level of all my favorite dishes (part my selection, part the chef's)
I was blown away by the quality and the explosive nature of every truly inspired dish...this is the best Vegan food I have EVER had...and if I could eat this way every day I would stop eating meat.
As always the food here was incredible, and all of the staff was very polite.
Only complaint is it seemed they were either understaffed or the folks bussing on the floor were a little green. Felt like he was in the weeds the whole night and very difficult to get his attention. Other than that it's a great experience as always and highly recommended.
What a neighborhood treasure! Love the organic and natural take on fusion dishes.
Presentation and ambience are lovely too.
Def at the top of the local vegan restaurant list for me, all the dishes are inventive and unique. Highly recommended!
I love the fact that they don't try to disguise vegan/vegetarian ingredients as "meat, cheese, eggs, etc." the food is tasty, exceptional, unique and presented beautifully.
Had the sincere pleasure of eating at The Gardarene Swine. Loved the entire evening from the Valet parking outfront to the entrance and the fabulous staff. The chef's meals were incredible and so creative. Yummy Yummy! We started with the Roasted Garlic & Thyme popcorn and the Lemon and Pistachio Kale chips. They need to make big bags of the popcorn!Best i have ever had! Then we had Shaved Vegetable and Quinoa salad. Terrific! Followed by Blackened Cauliflower and the Hand Rolled Pasta! OMG! Desserts were a Tres Leches with Fairy Floss served in a bowl and the Coconut Pudding with mint ice and strawberries, brown sugar and graham cracker! Will definitely return again and again. What a fabulous restaurant!
I was disapointed to learn that the food was rather old school and somewhat lacked texture and complexity in flavours to lift the experience. THe service was ecellent and the waiters an extra.
Can't say enough about the food. The $40 tasting menu is truly a steal! Loved the sweet potato, the mushroom, and the burned cauliflower. Will definitely go back someday! 👍🏼
If you have friends or loved ones that have been unimpressed with vegan fare, or if you are vegan and haven't found that killer location that brings dignity and respect to your diet, then Gadarene Swine is for you. Don't let the name of the venue fool you. They pride themselves on contradictions and a high quality, totally vegan menu is their goal.
My daughter and I had a wonderful vegan (send off) dinner. We chose the chefs choice plan; every course was artfully prepared and explained to us. We sat at the bar and loved watching the chefs prepare the wonderful creations in front of us. It was such a relief for my daughter to NOT have to explain that she doesn't eat dairy. Most places try to convince her there is only a tiny bit or say they omitted the cream (or ?) and then try to cover it up. I would absolutely recommend this restaurant to vegetarians and non vegetarians who like to be adventurous.
I have also been to the sister property - Scratch Bar which was equally delicious although definetly not vegan.
Chef Phillip seems like a great guy to work for and I wish him much success.
This was our first time at this all vegetarian restaurant. We went with another couple. We all chose the "chef's" menu, where you don't pick the dishes, they just bring them out. The first dish was in a shot glass with a spicy tomato, and I think avacado in the bottom, and then sake in between. Delicious! After that, things came in waves. It was a lot of food, but all imaginative and pleasing to the palate. We will definitely go back again. I have been to a number of vegetarian restaurants, and this is one of the best I have experienced!
Staff were all friendly, helpful!~
Can't express how impressed we were with the care the team put into the preparation of our food and the level of service we received. The chef walked us through every dish, highlighting the approach taken turning ordinary vegetables into a delicious and beautiful experience. Thank you Gadarene Swine for making our trip to LA so memorable. Easily the best vegan restaurant we've eaten at from among the top spots in Toronto, Vancouver, Seattle, Portland, New York and LA.
Awful service. We left, starving, after 45 minutes and only receiving 4 olives between the two of us.
Delicious flavors in the vegan foods and the sraff had great knowledge when I asked some questions.
Creative vegan dishes that exude flavor and are beautiful in presentation. We had the "beginners tasting menu" for $40 at dinner. It included 6 dishes: deep fried olives in olives, hummus, carrot salad, hand torn pasta dish, blackened cauliflower dish, coconut pudding dessert. Loved the olives, carrot salad, cauliflower and dessert. Hummus was just okay and the pasta was good but the sauce overly sweet. Atmosphere comfortable and casual and service primarily attentive, friendly and knowledgeable. Unfortunately one server who was very grumpy but he was the exception. Serving sizes ranged from small to barely medium, but we were both full by the time dessert arrived. A lovely experience that I would recommend and myself try again. Lunch time on the patio would also be very nice.
We came here for a Sunday lunch on a whim, and I could not be any more pleased with my decision. Since my first visit, I have already been back twice. The menu is inventive and beautifully plated. We particularly enjoyed the peanut butter and jelly sandwich, hummus and the coconut pudding dessert. Our server was very friendly and made excellent recommendations. The outdoor patio is perfect for the spring and summer. Can't say enough good things about this restaurant- We will definitely be back.
Being able to get flavors elevated with vegetables is all the "proof" needed to attest to the Chef's skills. Quite the spot!
I'm not, but my girlfriend is a vegetarian, so we decided to try this place out for our third anniversary. I have to say, the food was amazing. Highlights were the mushrooms, the truffle popcorn, the stuffed fried olives, and the coconut key lime pudding desert (which I'd go back just to have that). The servers were very nice, on par with some of the fancier restaurants in town. For such a fine dining experience, I didn't feel like it broke the bank, either, and we were both stuffed by the end of the small tasting menu.
Foodies, vegan or carnivorous, will enjoy the flavorful preparation and satisfying dishes. The staff is also very helpful with wine pairings that enhance the experience.
Great service and delicious food! A wonderful spot for vegans and non-vegans alike.
Took my boyfriend for a birthday lunch, and we loved it. It was easy to quickly rack up a big bill (almost $100 for two entrees, two alcoholic drinks, two desserts, and an appetizer), but only because everything was so good, we kept going. The actual entrees aren't too overpriced (under $20 each) and the quality is phenomenal. Creative flavor combinations, smart, healthy versions of old favorites, and petite portions of incredible heirloom veggie-based concoctions. Do ask your server about the size of your entree before you order, as some are smaller than you might expect. Overall, I give it an A+ for a special occasion. And if you're willing to forego drinks and dessert, you can get out without breaking the bank.
Outstanding experience. Would highly recommend to anyone wanting something extraordinary!!
The vegan cuisine at the Gadarene Swine is worth writing home about! Especially delicious were the blackened cauliflower & coconut pudding. Looking forward to eating there again!
Boasting flavor combinations that I had never dreamed of, the food was an art. I felt so privileged getting to eat food like that. I love how the emphasis was on the vegetable, and not all about trying to mimic a tried and true popular american meat dish. I wish I could eat here every day.
We went for a Valentine's Day lunch. Limited menu, but either all selections were great or we both just got lucky. Desserts were very grown up, and "simply fabulous." Wine selections were very good. Excellent service, and all reasonably priced. Can't wait for a return trip for the dinner experience.
This was almost our best experience yet at this restaurant, except for the very end. We ordered their yummy coconut dessert only to be given what amounted to 5 teaspoons full of the dessert. We've had the item before, and 3 of us were able to share it, but for whatever reason this time (and actually the last time as well), they only put in a itty bitty amount of pudding. Like I said, about 5 teaspoons worth. It wouldn't have been as bad, but they charged us $9 for it. It was worth only $3.50. As good as it tastes, I would stay away from that item, for it is so not worth the amount they charge.
I've been to The Gadarene Swine five times now and each time is truly an experience that you feel like would be tough to top anywhere or even keep up in the same restaurant, but their food and the dining experience wows every time. Each time I've been, I couldn't help but bring new people with me because if you've never understood how food could be more than a good meal, or you just want to live life to the fullest, eating there should be on your bucket list.
Nobody I've brought to this restaurant has been vegan. They've all raved about their experience and are quick to be in awe once the meal begins. I mostly eat vegan and I find that too often, vegan food is made in a way that assumes people just want healthy vegetables and things like soy and quinoa. That's an awful idea and why people can't phathom going vegan, because that's what comes to mind and what so many restaurants offer. The food at The Gadarene Swine is truly a work of art that anyone that isn't childish about eating things made with vegetables appreciates in every course available. Their menu changes and even occasionally includes vegetables grown in their own garden in the back. Their service is usually more than you could ever ask for.
I know this is clearly a very glowingly positive review. I promise I have nothing to gain but a sense of civic pride from sharing the gospel of the Gadarene Swine. Back to the food.
Each dish seems to be the work of someone (a team) of artists unbridled by expectations of dishes we already know. Instead, each dish explores new flavors possible through clever combinations of fresh vegetables cooked in different and often very unique ways. As you're eating, you don't need to question the content of your food- is this soy? -because it's clearly what it looks like for the most part and the staff is happy to explain every detail of the magic and care behind your food. I wouldn't prejudge this menu. Just go in and ask for the full tasting. Wine pairings are great too!
The chef and his staff are clearly aiming for something impressive ... and they work hard. Nice people, all of them. It's the food itself that's the problem. By and large, flavors ranged from sweet to too-sweet to too-salty; and on our multi-course tasting menu the same handful of ingredients kept popping up. (Mind you, this was not a "theme" ingredient meal, as one would get at Maude.) The place was packed, though, so they probably don't need more business from us.
