For all of you who hate waiting out in the cold for our delicious fried chicken the front porch has just bought you a cozy new neighborhood bar across the street called Rock Bar(as in geological rocks you'll see what I mean) where you can get a great cocktail before dinner & after dessert. Rumor has it there may be a midnight fried chicken window with a get it til it's gone type of supply and demand in the works!Plus there will be some front porch signature snacks to hold you over or up.

My husband and I just moved here from NYC, a city known for a great brunch scene. We've been on the search for places that rival what we were used to and I think we've found it here. The food was great with a slightly different twist on things and the cocktails were definitely well crafted and unique.
Some food experiences are capable of whisking you back to a childhood memory and this was one of those experiences for me. I can recall being a toddler living in upstate New York and going to a local poultry farm where they would slaughter, pluck and fry your chicken fresh while you waited. The fried chicken at The Front Porch took me right back there.
We sampled quite a few other items from the menu including the fried okra, shrimp and grits, biscuits and mac and cheese. While everything was amazing, the fried chicken has been calling me back. I can't wait to go back and devour a whole bucket - possibly on my own.
Do not let the unassuming appearance fool you - this is the best cajun meal I have had in San Francisco. The spicy shrimp and red eye gravy were incredible. The nutella bread pudding dessert with hazelnut and chocolate flavors was amazing. And the cocktails and wine menu are distinctive - just suited to the cuisine.
I came to this restaurant after many strangers recommended the restaurant, telling me how ridiculously good The Front Porch's fried chicken was, and the 2-day process to make the fried chicken. If that many people are all raving about the same place and same food, I figured I had to check it out! Inside was very laid back, relaxing. Staff was friendly.
- BLOODY MARY (delicious and had a great kick, I also liked how they added the pickled okra to it)
- FRIED CHICKEN AND WAFFLE (confirmed that this was as good as everyone said it would be! the skin was very crispy, the chicken extremely moist and well seasoned. This may be one of the best fried chickens I've ever had. I'm not a huge waffle fan but did like the fact they had bacon pieces in there - who doesn't like bacon??)
- SHRIMP AND GRITS (this was actually my FAVORITE -- even better than the fried chicken in my opinion! I've struggled to find delicious tasting, flavorful shrimp and grits anywhere outside of John Besh's Luke restaurant in New Orleans and this was an exciting find! The poached egg they added to the top of the dish was a nice touch and added creaminess.)
My mouth is salivating thinking about the food. Seems like I need to schedule another brunch at The Front Porch!
In a city that is as crazy about brunch as San Francisco is, waiting for over an hour for a table is commonplace. So a brunch spot with a full bar in a chill neighborhood that takes reservations is a wonderful thing. Even though the food isn't the greatest, and the service isn't the most attentive, I'd rather get a reservation and eat on time than get slightly better food and waste 1-2 hours of my day.
A group of five of us went to Front Porch for a birthday dinner, each with very particular preferences in food, and there was so much variety of tastes and ingredients available on the menu that we all had plenty to choose from. Vegetarian friendly, teen friendly, everyone friendly. we shared a few dishes and hoarded a few others for ourselves! We shared some salads and appetizers, crawfish hushpuppies with spicy remoulade in particular were outstanding. We also shared a bucket of the incredibly mouthwatering and perfectly fried chicken, which came with ten pieces in a big movie style popcorn bucket with random popcorn thrown in for fun! Also well worth mentioning is the blackened Mississipp catfish, fresh and perfectly cooked on a bed of lentils and chicories, and the spicy shrimp and grits, with an outstanding andouille sausage red eye gravy, soooo moreish!
The staff were very friendly and attentive, food came quickly and piping hot, everything about our evening, including drink selection and being made to feel welcome, was delightful!
Fried chicken is my favorite food and the chicken here is delicious: it is better than every other spot in town with the possible exception of Farmer Brown and even there it is certainly a worthy rival. It is also within walking distance of my house, so I come here often. But even though I come here weekly and tip generously, I often receive what can best be described as lackadaisical service. This visit was no exception: I arrived on time for my 7 PM reservation, was asked to sit outside while my table was being readied and waited. And waited.
After a few larger parties than me who arrived, my 9 year old daughter urged me to ask the staff what was going on. I feared the worst, that they had perhaps given away my table. But no, it was sitting there, clean and ready for me. They had just forgotten about us and left us sitting in the cold. Sigh.
They also cleared the table and started wiping it down while we were still seated at it. I know the place is busy, but c'mon guys! Nonetheless, I still tipped my usual 25%. The food is amazing and I want to always be welcome and the service is never rude or anything, just kind of clueless.
Others had raved about this place, so we finally went. We really enjoyed the atmosphere. The drinks were good - especially the margarita, which was very spicy. The food was good, but everything is very heavy. It would be great if there could be some dishes that aren't so heavy.
The Front Porch was such a perfect place for brunch. I ordered the sweet potato and pulled pork hash which comes in a mini skillet with grits and porcini mushrooms and is just generally delicious. I also ordered the porch swing, a not-too-sweet yummy whiskey cocktail. The friend I was with had eggs Benedict but the real star of her meal was the perfect breakfast potatoes that came with it. I had to try not to steal all of them. The servers and hosts were helpful, the food arrived in a timely fashion, and the environment was lively. I'll definitely be back!
Had dinner at the Front Porch on Friday evening. Had made reservations and was shown to our table immediately. Service was on point. Had the crawfish hush puppies as our starter. Excellent. Loved the remoulade sauce. I had the shrimp and grits. My boyfriend the fried chicken. Both were excellent. Recommend to all that wants a good meal.
Disappointed by the service on our recent visit. We had a reservation, arrived on-time but were seated 20min late. Then our server rushed us and dropped the check when I was not even half-way through my meal! Not cool. The food was good, greasy/buttery, but that's what we expected for Southern food, but the service left a sour taste in my mouth.
Wow i was so looking forward to attending this southern gourmet inspired restaurant which i saw on the hit Foodies show Diners Driveins and Dives.. it s suppose to be a neighborhood gem and had a couple of SIEGET awards.. but even though i had a reservation we still had to wait an half hour outside and it was chilly in sanfrancisco with no seating while waiting too.I should have known after the hostess was rude to me because i got tired of waiting in the cold outside so i stepped inside; i had a bad feeling turned out she was our waitress. I ordered the fried chicken and cornmeal walful and both were really over cooked and my walful had a hole in it as if some one had taken a bite .. i tried to eat it since we had driven an hour to get there parked 5 blks. away and waited to get served.. The restaurant was dark and a lil dingy and nothing matched i felt i was in somebody's dank Basement.. i had to send my Gumbo back it was tasteless and brown it didn't even look appeitazing and it tasted like the gravy part got burned and it was a lil greasy. The only thing i enjoyed was my ginger beer and a Fruit platter my Vegan eating daughter orderedmy Hubby had a burger and fries he said the burger was ok his bun looked like someone put their thumb in it weird and his fries were thin and hollow in the middle he didnt eat them i was so disappointed and it was my 55 yr. birthday lunch.. never again SF Bernal Heights you can have have this Gem.. I'll stick to the East Bay Because Aunt Mary's Cafe ROCKS Their SOUTHERN GOURMET CUISINE...
Fantastic food and really great atmosphere! Open table reservation made it very easy and we were seated immediately. We had a Shrimp and grits, shrimp Po Boy and took some Beignets to go and walked around the beautiful neighborhood surrounding the restauarant.
A friend recommended this as an "authentic" Cajun restaurant. I've been to Louisiana once and have eaten at a few other Cajun/Creole places. While there are certainly some typical dishes on the menu that I've seen elsewhere (poboys, filet gumbo, red beans and rice, etc.), there are quite a few that I've never encountered before. The atmosphere is cozy and down to earth, and the service is friendly, albeit a bit slow. I would go back, as long as I have a reservation. Brunch was quite busy.
The Front Porch was a great casual spot for good food and an interesting menu of apps and dinners. I splurged to get the cheeseburger with the fried egg and a single piece of fried chicken. It was fabulous. Everyone enjoyed their meal and the eclectic atmosphere. The only thing less than perfect was the chilly draft that hit our ankles when the door would open....Other than that, a high recommendation for a casual fun dinner!
We made a last-minute reservation for our family of 3 at Front Porch. We arrived at 6:15 and were seated immediately. The little corn muffins they bring out for a snack are yummy, and we enjoyed our appetizer, the bacon-wrapped dates. My husband's burger was very good, and my blackened catfish was tasty, but I wasn't crazy about the potato salad it was served on. All in all, the Front Porch fills a need--it's good food, really friendly service, and though it's a bit on the dark side, it's a convivial and family-friendly spot for a good meal.
After reading the reviews, we were anxious to try this restaurant. The crayfish hush puppies and stuffed fried dates were wonderful appetizers. If we would have stopped there, our review would be much different. Two of us had Dr pepper short ribs. Small portion served lukewarm but very tasty. Unfortunately, the ribs were served on cold mashed potatoes and gravy, also cold, though the gravy was tasty and not too salty as it sometimes can be. Two of us had shrimp and grits: shrimp was bland but the grits were rich and creamy. One of us ordered the fried chicken, which was served very hot, crunchy crust and very moist inside. Crust was not as flavorful as expected but this was by far, the best entre. Beignets were so disappointing. Realizing you can't get close to café du Monde beignet, these were still pretty awful, served lukewarm, doughy in the center and greasy. Super disappointing.
