The Front Page Restaurant and Grill in Washington D.C. is a staple in the Dupont Circle neighborhood and has been serving guests for nearly 25 years. The waiters were all hanging around, doing nothing (actually playing Pokemon). We had to ask someone to come to waffle station to make a waffle. We waited for 15mins before the waiter realized we were done and ready for the check.I knew we'd made the wrong decision when we sat down. Do yourself a favor and find somewhere better for brunch!
I ordered the fish tacos from the brunch menu and they were delicious and quite sizable. We were there for the UEFA championship and all the TV screens were tuned to that. Unfortunately, the place we were was rather small and they were playing music rather loudly which made me unable to truly enjoy the experience.
The food was okay, not great not terrible. The bottomless mimosas were not very good. Tasted like pure orange juice. In addition our waitress was never around so it took forever for refills! A 2 hour limit is set but you can barley get out of there in that amount of time because it takes the server so long to do everything. I asked 3 people for help and still waited. We were there before it was busy, around 10 people in the entire restaurant. So I can't imagine how it is once it gets busy later in the day!
I'm local and have gone to the Front Page often; however, this Saturday night, there was a "paint by numbers" class/wine party or something in the main room and it was LOUD! LOUD! LOUD! to the point that you could not hear anyone across the table from you. It was definitely something that should have been mentioned when making the reservation because I would not have booked a table had I known what a nightmare it was going to be that night. Usually, the Front Page is a good choice, but this time I just couldn't get it any higher than "Fair".
I've dined at other locations for brunch and the food was always plentiful; however, this was not my experience while dining here. We constantly had to wait for the food to be restocked and it should never get to a point where diners are pulling for scraps before the food is restocked.
Food was ok, but the server seemed uninterested to attending to us. He must be new, because he didn't ask us for drinks - we had to ask. He didn't come by after we got our food to see how it was. He seemed busy with someone else. Not great service. Also, the manager or lead guy couldn't get off his phone long enough to help us when we walked in. It was not a good visit.
I went to Front Page for Sunday Brunch to celebrate my birthday. The food is always excellent. I did have a bit of trouble with having enough space for my party, but we made it work. Also, my mimosa glass did get a little too low for my liking when ordering bottomless mimosas, but staff was nice and fun.
My Horrendous Experience at The Front Page:
I have been going to this restaurant since the 1980's. when Vernon Jordan was an attorney at Weil, Gotshal and Manges, and never had a terrible experience like I did when my partner and I, along with four other guests went there for brunch on January 15, 2017.
Our original reservation was for 11:45 a.m. We were seated after 12:00 p.m. No problem. We were aware that there is two hour limit for Sunday brunch customers.
Prior to 1:45 p.m., our waiter informed us of the two hour limit. No big deal, because we weren't seated at our scheduled time. We decided to settle our check and continue with other plans for the day. However...
The manager came to our table and told us that they were very busy and we needed to pay our bill and leave. Okay? Then he had the nerve to say (loud and nasty) "NOW!"
I followed him to the area where the waiters process the checks and told him that his demeanor in approaching us was completely uncalled for and out of line. We are a bunch of grown men (Black) and would not put up with his crap. He attempted a half-hearted apology, to which I told him he could keep and shove where needed.
He is a very nasty person that doesn't need to deal with the public. The Front Page has been moderate to extremely busy each time I've taken folks there, and apparently he can't manage himself, let alone the volume of business. Suffice it to say, that after going to there for decades and recommending it to a large number of people, I will not be going back. I won't recommend it to another soul, and will pass this message along to everyone I know. The customer service slid completely downhill, off a cliff and drowned. What a shame!
Brunch buffet was quite good: omelette station was awesome (plenty of ingredients), carved prime rib was delicious and rare, buffet options were great. Fried chicken a bit dry and servers a bit overworked so you had to be aggressive to get drink refills. Overall, pretty great place though.
We were 15 minutes late for our 5:15pm reservation (couldn't easily find parking still a week after the blizzard) & they had already cancelled it!! Then we had to wait another 10 minutes for a table to be ready - not sure why when the place was empty except for 2 tables & we had a reservation! We told the waiter 3 times we had to be out of there by 6:30pm for a show, but he still was slow. Took almost 10 minutes to get beer, then when we finished, it took him a long time to come back to swipe credit cards. We decided to use 1 card to move faster, but we still got out of there almost 10 minutes late.
It's too bad the service is ALWAYS slow (this is the 3rd time we've experienced this, so 3 strikes...) because they have good food & beer selection. We probably won't go back again unless we have a long time to spend.
This was the second time I've been here for brunch, usually we're here just to enjoy the bar. I got the buffet and bottomless mimosa, my fiancé for the same except champagne instead of mimosa. Our server was quick and attentive, but towards he end of our experience be frequented the table less and less.
Food was amazing as usual, I once again couldn't conquer but a third of the spread, but everything was delicious. Champagne was nice and cold. I definitely recommend this spot along with 1 or maybe 2 other places in DC for brunch goodness.
Loved the Brunch, food is awesome, and service wasn't as well as it had been before. The server frequently forgot strays, drinks, and condiments. May have been over extended or overwhelmed. But she wasn't the best server.
Food was great. The guy that makes the waffles doesn't like jokes. Lol. Not sure why, but he is serious about those waffles.
Unfortunately, it was the incredibly rude service that stuck out. The fact that they didn't check-in my OpenTable reservation doesn't surprise me, as the hostess acted like we were scum walking in off the street. They played music with cuss words. They have all these regulations on how many hours you can stay and how many checks you can have. None of it applied to us as we were visiting the nearby embassy, but it was so off-putting. Aren't they supposed to be about customer service?
