About The Frog and Turtle
What is a gastro pub?” Gastronomy is the study of preparing and consuming food. A pub is a neighborhood spot for affordable food and good times. When you combine the two you get a neighborhood spot with a focus on food prepared from scratch with fresh ingredients.

The Frog and Turtle Ratings and Reviews
SO delicious! My husband and I came for dinner tonight. The cocktails were great. Everything is homemade, local and delicious. The service is amazing and halfway through the meal, live music started. The folk band was fun and energetic, but not too loud or overwhelming. We'll definitely be back. We live a mile away and can't believe we've never been here before.
Our reservation time was for 10:00 am, Easter morning. We arrived about 10 minutes early and were shown right to our seat. The music was fairly loud but it did not interfere with the conversation at our table. Water was brought out without request but one glass was seriously cracked. When this was pointed out, the waitress quickly removed it and brought us out another glass of water, in a timely fashion.
The waitress informed us that there could be a bit of a wait for the food, as all the food was made fresh from scratch and they were pretty packed.
Food arrived in about 20 minutes and was nice and hot, just the way breakfast should be served! I ordered Eggs Florentine with Hollandaise Sauce, along with the green salad, homefries and a side of bacon, all of which were pretty delicious! The Hollandaise Sauce was white, and slightly tangy, not what I expected but still tasty. The greens were fresh, well dressed in an oil- based vinaigrette, the bacon was thick, fairly crisp and the homefries were generous chunks of potatoes with bits of onion, nicely flavored with garlic salt.
We shared a plate of 3 donuts. They were not the best I have ever had, I would have preferred a more traditional chocolate glaze, but it was fun sampling the unusual ones...maple with bacon, peanut butter and banana (the Elvis?). Personally, I would probably forgo the donuts in the future, because they are so very sweet, however, they were a real hit with everyone else in my party and at a price of $6.00 for 3 of them, reasonably priced.
We frequent the Frog and Turtle at least once every couple of months and always have a very good consistent meal with great service. Brunch is our favorite . Everything is so fresh and the specials are great. Will keep going back as long as nothing changes.
What a beautiful evening! From the second we walked in and were warmly greeted, to the nice table by the window, to the wonderful service by Cameo, the dreamy cocktails and wine, and the food! really fantastic food, plus the truly awesome live music, we thoroughly enjoyed every single moment. I'm so glad we have a reservation because the place was hopping the entire time. Can't wait to return!
Despite having a 7:30 reservation we didn't get a table until 8:30. A little irritating, but I don't like being rushed out the door so understand that sometimes things run a bit behind. A drink on the house would have eased the hour long wait though. Once seated, service was friendly, but extremely slow. The food was tasty, but the appetizers in particular seemed to have been ready for a long while before making it to the table. They weren't all that warm and had clearly been sitting for a considerable amount of time. They still tasted good, but I've had both before (crabcakes and fried mushrooms) so I know that they are usually far better. The burger came out cooked to a perfect medium and was delicious. As was the homemade ice cream. I try to avoid going for a meal when there is a band playing and now I remember why, it was unreasonably loud. I literally had to shout at my friend across the table. It would be nice if the music were kept at a lower volume to allow people to enjoy their dinner companions. I was hoarse the next day from shouting over the band. I'll be back, but will stick to sitting at the bar for faster service and avoid live bands.
The Frog and Turtle is a staple in the downtown Westbrook restaurant scene. The menu is an ever changing selection of fresh local ingredients and creative nightly specials. Their brunch is one of the best in all of Greater Portland. If you haven't been, do yourself a favor and go. Check their facebook page for weekly local music guests too.
We started with the chacuterie plate and 3 cheeses. It was delicious. My wife had the salmon over risotto which she liked and I had a bone in pork chop special that was fantastic. We've been to brunch here which was really good and our dinner did not disappoint. We look forward to returning soon
The food is wonderful, and the servings are generous. Presentation of meals is outstanding.
The service is excellent, the servers friendly and attentive. The atmosphere is relaxed and diners do not feel rushed. Spending time at the Frog and Turtle is a very pleasant experience.
The food was outstanding. Great taste, value and quantity. Just can't justify spending 2.5 hours at a restaurant getting a one-course meal. Brunch reservations for 11:15 and didn't get our food til around 1 PM. Absolutely incredible. Come here for great food if you've got tons of time to kill.
This was my first time here for dinner, I have been several times for brunch and it is always excellent! The food was amazing as expected, the only complaint I have is that our waitress was pretty slow and definitely neglected us towards the end of our meal. We waited for 15 minutes for a second round of drinks and never were explained the desert specials like the other tables around us. She also never even told us her name!
I had made a reservation with a friend as we had received gift certificates at Christmas. When we arrived we were set at a small table next to the bar, the seating arrangement and the stage. Had I been there before and been familiar with the setup, I would have asked for a table away from the "pub". Hoping for a quiet dinner where we could hear each other talk, I asked the waitress if there was another table available and was told no without an explanation. Shortly after that a couple came in and one of the tables in the front window which was set up for 4 had two place settings cleared and the couple were seated there. Needless to say we were upset as we sat through dinner being cold as we caught the draft from the door every time it was opened. As this was our first experience with you we were a little disappointed in the service and attention we received.
We had friends meeting us from out of town for brunch. We had been there for dinner and brunch before and I have also rented to Frog and Turtle for wedding and baby showers. We have never been disappointed. The food was outstanding, the staff is always so friendly and is always a place that we want to bring friends who have never been as well as those who want to return!..
First, let me say we've been to the Frog and Turtle on several previous occasions and were very satisfied with all aspects of the meal. This time, however, was disappointment after disappointment.
It started with our seats, right in the center of the walkway between the drafty front door and the bustling kitchen. We asked for a different table but were told there was none. OK. Our waitress took our drink order and disappeared for at least ten minutes. We figured we'd better order our food when she brought our drinks, even though we like to linger a bit over wine or cocktails before being served. Well, both the menu and our waitress clearly pointed out that since all food was custom prepared, it could take between 30 and 40 minutes to get our meal. So we ordered and then looked forward to some chat time with our drinks and some warm bread (when it finally arrived). Twelve minutes later our meals arrived, well before we'd even tried the bread or gotten a third of the way through our drinks. Surprise!
My partner's chicken crepes were good and tasty. My salmon (which on earlier visits I'd had previously and thoroughly enjoyed) was undercooked and cool. Though I was asked how I like it cooked (I said "medium, I guess"), my experience is that with fish like thls, it should be cooked until it flakes. If this piece of fish had been a steak, it would have been rare. It was pink, runny, and cool. I asked to have a chunk of it reheated, which improved it.
As a final flourish to our evening, we were given a check for a much larger amount than we had ordered. We alerted the waitress, who proceeded to figure it out and who then returned with the correct one.
All in all, not a good evening for us. I wish we could say we'd go back to try it again, but I honestly don't think we will.
We wanted to try this local restaurant since we had not been to a "Gastropub" type of restaurant. In sum we had an excellent experience. The atmosphere is pub-like and the menu includes both up-scale appetizers/entrees as well as a pub menu. There is a fairly limited selection of wine, but carefully selected and more than what was expected for a pub environment. Beer selection was excellent for local microbrews. Our server was very knowledgeable about the food and was able to answer all of our questions. My wife had the salmon entree and stated that it was best salmon that she has had in Maine. I had a seafood crepe and it was good, but I would have preferred scallops instead of the baby shrimp that we somewhat overcooked. The highlight of the meal was the dessert that we shared. It was a "chocolate tear drop" and had thin dark chocolate in the shape of a tear drop and in the center was chocolate mousse topped with whipped cream and a coconut chocolate truffle. Then on one side of the tear drop was a cream anglaise sauce and on the other side was a raspberry sauce. The was the most outstanding dessert I have had in a very long time. Kudos to the pastry chief!!
THE SERVICE WAS APPALLINGLY SLOW, THE FOOD WAS TASTELESS, THE "LOBSTER" POT PIE REQUIRED A SEARCH FOR THE LITTLE SCRAPS OF LOBSTER @ THE PRICE OF $28. THE LIVE MUSIC IS SO LOUD THAT CONVERSATION IS IMPOSSIBLE. MY DRINK WAS MADE WITH A MAJOR INGREDIENT MISSING. VERY DISAPPOINTING AS WE HAVE BEEN THERE MANY TIMES BEFORE AND WERE HAPPILY SATISFIED WITH EVERYTHING (THO THE MUSIC IS ALWAYS TOO LOUD)
If you haven't tried the Frog and Turtle for Brunch on a Sunday, it's a must try. Everything is made to order, including their donuts - favorites include the John Candy and the Elvis. The breakfast meals don't disappoint, either. Sunday included a Scallion Mac and Cheese Benedict that was so rich and creamy, it was amazingly delicious. They rival some of the Portland Brunch greats!
Excellent Bloody Mary and the donut choices terrific! We had 11:45 Brunch reservations and were seated around noon. Great omlets beautifully plated with mixed greens and hash brown potatoes. Beware if you are under a time constraint: did not receive our order until close to one o'clock. It was a long wait...
My husband and I dined on Valentine's Day. The kitchen normally opens at 5:30 pm; but the only reservation available was for 5:00 pm so we took it. The staff had not finished setting up for the evening, so we watched balloons and candles being distributed about the dining room. The staff was friendly and efficient; although the bar was a touch on the slow side. However, our meal was very good and neither of us could clean our plates. This place is worth a trip.
