About The Frog and Turtle
What is a gastro pub?” Gastronomy is the study of preparing and consuming food. A pub is a neighborhood spot for affordable food and good times. When you combine the two you get a neighborhood spot with a focus on food prepared from scratch with fresh ingredients.

The Frog and Turtle Ratings and Reviews
We had an excellent dinner at the Frog and Turtle. Good beers on tap and a very good margarita. Our poutine appetizer was delicious, and the shephard's pie crepe was honestly one of the best meals I have ever had. The burger we had was also very good. The wait staff was friendly and attentive, but we never felt rushed. A great, cozy environment for a casual, yet very nice meal.
Delicious comfort food with a personal touch! Everything is made to order from scratch and you will appreciate the extra effort by chef James Tranchemontagne from the amazing presentation to your last bite. The wait staff is friendly, courteous and knowledgeable.
This is a lovely "find", tucked away in Westbrook, ME! Creative menu with a wide range of prices. Our evening special was delightful--seafood stew reminiscent of jambalaya but without the saffron rice. The chocolate "bomb" dessert was outstanding, too! We had a superb waitress--patient, friendly, attentive, helpful. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone.
I'm a Portland resident and this was my first time at The Frog and Turtle, but will definitely not be my last. We started our meal with some very tasty martinis form their impressive bar menu and split the Prince Edward Island Mussels steamed with garlic, tasso, and fresh herbs in a cajun style sauce; the warm bread and butter that were also served was perfect for dipping into the mouthwatering cajun sauce. My very knowledgable waiter recommended the pork shank served over homemade mac-n-cheese for an entree, the dish was INCREDIBLE! The perfectly cooked piece of pork literally fell off the bone as you cut into it and was the ideal accompaniment for cutting the richness of the creamy mac-n-cheese made a béchamel sauce.
Had a very nice first visit to Frog and Turtle on. Friday night. Fun environment, busy. Seating and initial service was slow, but once we got a server, things went well. We got salmon, hamburgers, and a flatbread pizza. The only disappointment was the flatbread. If yu are expecting a real pizza taste for a kid, this is not it. E salmon was very well prepared and tasty. The burger was rated by a burger loving boy as one of the best in the area. All in all a very good meal. We will definitely be going back.
The Frog and Turtle bills itself as a Gastro-Pub but they really put the emphasis on the "Gastro" of it. Our party of four ordered a wide variety of drinks, appetizers, entrees and desserts; we all agreed that everything met or exceeded our expectations. We had a delightfully unhurried dining experience, service was attentive but never rushed because the kitchen makes everything to order.
The Frog and Turtle offers a nice balance between pub favorites and innovative offerings making it a dining experience that appeals to most everyone from foodies to five year olds. I love that they have local music artists on a regular basis. The night we were there the chef went from table to table talking with the diners and I thought this added a very nice touch in making the connection from kitchen to table. We will be putting this on our frequent dining list!
The Frog and Turtle is one of our favorite restaurants. The space is cozy and comfortable. The food is prepared to order, using fresh, local ingredients whenever possible. We especially enjoyed the daily selection of cheeses. The staff is knowledgable and friendly. Great spot for dinner! Highly recommend it.
My compliments to the chef! The food was absolutely delicious, especially the seafood chowder and the pork shank with maccaroni and cheese. Our server was nice and extremely helpful and the atmosphere of the restaurant is small and cozy. We hope to go back again.
Overall, the F&T was good. The ambiance was great and the server was very attentive and outgoing. But there were a couple small stumbles that could have been chalked up to a busy Saturday night:
It took a couple minutes for us to get seated. We'd been standing at the door for about a minute-and-a-half before we were noticed.
The server took a couple minutes to get to us (again, probably just a busy night) but was very attentive from then on out.
The mussel appetizer was good. There're better mussels around, but these were by no means bad.
The food took a while to get out of the kitchen; my ham was only slightly warm. The date's baked squash was the perfect temperature.
Not terrible by any means - we'll be back to try the
I have always enjoyed Frog and Turtle, although it's a common "joke" among locals that the food is good, but the service is not. The service was so bad at my latest visit that I will not be back, regardless of how good the food is. One incident with the waiter was when we mentioned that a Cheeseburger did not have any cheese on it, and the response was "I don't really know what you want me to do about that". Enough said.
The food at F&T never disappoints - James is a master of creating rich, layered flavors without overdoing the sauces. Everything on the plate is well thought out and fits together. I had the pork shank with mac and cheese and my husband had the shepherd's pie crepe - and we argued over who picked the best meal! Our only complaint is that the food is so good we always end up overeating - we simply don't have the willpower to even have it boxed up!
Great food and atmosphere! There were 8 in our group and we requested a specific room and our request was honored. Our server was knowledgeable and willing to do what was necessary to get us out in time for our theater time immediately after dinner. Everyone enjoyed the delicious food and we would all go back to this restaurant again (but we would make sure to have it be more leisurely to enjoy it more without a deadline!)
the Frog & Turtle is the only "good" restaurant in Westbrook with a lovely atmosphere. However, I found the food to be "mediocre" for the money. Also, they didnt offer Espresso which I was disappointed about. Every good restaurant should offer espresso as many people really like it after a meal. The coffee was bland and weak. A top scale restaurant like this one, needs to pay attention to serving good quality coffee.
We go there often for the combination of great comfort food, the unusual crepes, the extensive bar. Usually, their waiters are extremely knowledgable about the liquors and wines. It can get loud if there is a large loud table. I highly recommend the Frog and Turtle.
The table we were at was in the middle of the restaurant on the other side of the leather sofa. It was an interesting table as I felt like I was in a fish bowl with lots of other people looking at me. Also, our table was in one of the main walking paths so I constantly felt like I was in the way. Once my chair was kicked by the waitress, but it was an accident and she apologized. No big deal for me; however it was just an odd table. Additionally, we have eaten there twice now and the food is amazing; however the dessert is lacking. It's fair, but just not great like the rest of the food. Overall, it is still a great dining experience and I would definitely go back!
This restaurant has become one of our very favorites! We are never disappointed with our experience. We love the booths by the window...very cozy and private and we love the ability to choose from a Pub menu or Dinner Entree menu. Can't wait to try the shepherd's pie crepe the next time!
My friend and I both ordered the Chardonnay, which was excellent, and we both ordered flatbreads, which were delicious. We had a booth by a large window, and it was pleasant to be able to look out as we enjoyed our meals. One negative: We arrived at 6pm and were not served our meal until almost 6:45. But all in all it was a pleasant experience, and I would go again. I particularly like the burgers.
