This is a great little place. The food never disappoints and the wine list is great. The fish soup was delicious.
Stephane was an excellent waiter! The food was fantastic. Great place!
We love the French Gourmet for its authentic French bistro feel, great service, excellent value, and usually good food. On this visit everything was good - escargot, nice warm bread, catch of the day, and dessert. But my duck confit - a dish I love - was inexplicably awful. It didn't seem to have been freshly prepared at all, and was so tough it was liking chewing on pieces of wood. I should have said something but didn't want to spoil the mood of our evening. I know they can do better, and hope they will pay more attention to this classic French dish...which when properly prepared should be tender and flavorful.
We have passed by this place a ton of times, but only stopped in recently. The whole place is very quant and cute. The service was great; both our server and the staff were nice and checked in with us multiple times. The food was amazing!! We got the prefix menu, and each course was great. I would recommend the Filet, but everything was great
Overall, great food, great service and fun atmosphere
I recently discovered this place after living in PB for over 7 years. Not only is the food DELICIOUS but the service is phenomenal. The decor is not super fancy but quaint and well suited for a romantic dinner or special occasion. I have now had the short ribs and the scallops and both were fantastic. Well worth a try if you have not been and we will definitely be back.
We decided to spend our wedding anniversary at the French Gourmet because they catered our wedding several years ago. We will delighted with Stefan's warm reception and friendly smile. It was a true French experience from start to finish. Stefan recommended three excellent wines in varying price points. We went with the first choice and it was delicious. The pate sampler and soupe l'oignon are always so pleasing to our palettes which we paired with a glass of Moet. We opted for the rack of lamb and cabernet short ribs for our main course which we paired with a bottle from Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The levels of flavor here were so satisfying. We couldn't resist the creme brulee and a chocolate cake (one of the patisserie maison selections). It was a pretty busy night and Stefan took excellent care of us, allowing us to dine at a slower pace, savoring every moment!
The food was excellent! I had the Nicoise salad. It had a wonderful dressing that was not too heavy.
This restaurant is great for any occasion. It is welcoming and the food and service can't be beat. We were treated like valued friends.
We used a coupon (a great value; prix fixe dinner for the two of us), and we were very satisfied with our meal. I had the rack of lamb (slight surcharge) and my husband tried the salmon. Both were delicious, as were our first courses. Our desserts, a torte, was not very interesting, bland but attractive, like most restaurant desserts. I like the feel of the French Gourmet, homey but authentic, and always good service and dashing waiters!
Service was great! Fun employees. Delicious food great prices! Thanks, FG, will be back!
We received a gift certificate for the French Gourmet and made reservations for a weeknight dinner. The restaurant isn't very impressive when you enter (first to the bakery); it isn't large and the tables are quite close together, and seems a bit noisy. There was only one waiter Stephen and his assistant Miguel to handle the entire place. But they do an excellent job; very professional, courteous and attentive. They never seem rushed, are very patient and my water glass was never empty. The food, although not very French was excellent. My husband ordered the filet and I had swordfish and both were delicious; the sauces were very flavorful and the meal arrived hot...not lukewarm like having sat under a jot light, but hot from the grill. Very unusual for restaurants in our past experiences. I saw a review that said the portions weren't very big, but we found them to be just right. The pear salad was wonderful as was the desert. I would definitely recommend the French Gourmet and plan on returning.
As this was our first visit to The French Gourmet and we were Thoroughly Pleased. The food was outstanding, with a start with Escargots, on to Braised Short Ribs & Pan Sear Mahi, and then a Napolean & Carrot Cake for desert. The service was great as well, the staff is cheerful, helpful and not overbearing with table visits. We will be coming back.
I had't been to this restaurant in decades. Now I would like to go weekly. The food and service were outstanding.
I just loved this restaurant! The food is amazing, the staff is extremely friendly and the ambience is really cozy!
We waited to be seated for a while since there were only two servers who seemed to be very busy. The onion soup we had was great, and I piked the seafood crepe a lot, but the steak was a bit dry and just mediocre. It was an okay experience.
We tried The French Gourmet for lunch during Restaurant Week and were very favorably impressed. Of course the menu was limited, but we also ordered the Avocado Salad from the main menu (which the restaurant split without our having to ask).
We opted for the Crêpes and Duck Confit, both of which were excellent choices. We wisely chose the dessert over the appetizer and were fully dazzled. So dazzled we went home with several more pastries from the conveniently-located counter.
The food was delicious, excellently-prepared, fresh, and well presented. The Crêpes were loaded with succulent seafood, and had a perfect sauce – creamy, but not heavy. The duck was amazing. Tender as confit should be, and with an intoxicating flavor.
As I mentioned, we opted for the pastry platter, and the Crème Brûlée, which was heavenly.
The wine list wasn't extensive, but there were a number of smart choices. Perfectly adequate for the bistro atmosphere.
We had an 11:45 reservation, and the restaurant was extremely busy the whole time. Food was served quickly, but there wasn't much of a choice. This is not a restaurant where you can linger; at least not for Sunday brunch. Service was friendly and efficient. With the restaurant so busy, there isn't much time for idle conversation, but the staff gives their full attention when they are at your table.
As I mentioned, the pastry counter is right at the entrance. We went home with a half dozen selections, and that was a difficult choice. If you love dessert, you must try them.
The French Gourmet provides great food in a casual setting. Try it out next time you're in Pacific Beach.
Service and food were outstanding. Pastries are amazing. This place is a bit small though so tables are tightly packed. This means that you can hear your neighbors' conversations clearly, so I guess it could be a bit awkward. I just wished we had a tad more privacy and quiet for me and my hubby's long overdue date.
Very enjoyable. Salad had fresh greens with goat cheese and delicious vinaigrette. Rack of lamb was rare and flavorful, nice portion. The bakery case made it difficult to chose just one. I decided on the fruit tart which was excellent. It was very busy, (Rest. wk) but the service was great. Welcoming and made me feel like an honored guest. Had to make a minor adjustment on my order due to an appt. and they were very accommodating. They have a very small parking lot and street parking. The inside is small as well, not even a dozen tables. But the food is good, the service was great, came with a smile and French accent. And what a bargain during restaurant week. Now I see they have a 3-course prix fixe offer. Need to go again.
The French Gourmet has consistently provided delicious food for those who want to try French cuisine.
Love the pate sampler. The presentation is lovely and it's always delicious.
I've lived in the area for a bit over six years and had only eaten here once for breakfast (note that i'm not a big breakfast fan in general) and hadn't been back. When my girlfriend and I saw the menu for restaurant week we immediately reserved a table and told our significant others we were going. We arrived and the waiter was absolutely spectacular - very professional and had an accent - You can't beat that! I ordered the escargot to start, the duck confit for my entree and creme brûlée for dessert. I haven't had escargot since i was in Paris a few years ago and was a little nervous - they were DELISH! My only complaint was that the bread it was accompanied by was dry/stale tasting (i'm a carb-oholic), but no matter because the garlicy/buttery goodness made up for it. The duck was on point with amazing red cabbage and the creme brûlée although petite had a nice thick sugar top. My fiancé ordered the short ribs which were in a FANTASTIC in a cabernet sauce/reduction - it made the perfect sweet/ish glaze for the meat. He also ordered the french onion soup which of course was amazing as well. We will definitely be going back and i'm so thankful they had such an amazing menu for restaurant week because we found another great place to dine rather than our usual restaurants! See you soon French Gourmet!
Very good French food in San Diego. Server really friendly. My son told me that I pick very good restaurant for this time. My family love it, on the way out we pick few pastry to go. Come back again in the future.
This is one of the least expensive, tastiest Restaurant Week values. The food was interesting and delicious. The wine was reasonably priced. And the baguette was very French.
Food is delightful; Took advantage of San Diego Restaurant Week; winelist is outstanding with fair pricing. Bakery goods are purchased in house as well as "to go". Outstanding selection of bakery items. Service is most attentive and polite.
Seating is tight and a loud speaking customer can annoy everyone in the place,
I was disappointed in my seafood crape. They used fake crab and I didn't see any shrimp or scallops as discribed. The appetizer and dessert was great!
It was my first time eating Escargot. The flavor was fine but I couldn't deal with the texture. Oh well! Somethings are not for everyone!
The rest of the meal was delicious.
We were greeted warmly by the owner. The food was excellent. The ambiance
was rather quaint French decor ... I liked it. We had a wonderful evening.
We often enjoy breakfast or lunch at the French Gourmet. They did not have enough help this time. The slow, spotty service slowed the flow of diners to a trickle which, in turn, limited the number of open tables. One couple walked out after waiting in vain for a waiter. The place was packed with people jammed into the small dining room or waiting in the narrow passage between door and deli and dining room, resulting in an uncomfortable noise level. Couldn't hear ourselves think, let alone visit with friends! Love to see a neighborhood favorite doing well, but disappointed in our overall experience!
Took a statycation in San Diego for 2-days from our home in Orange County. Ate at several places in bay area and La Jolla. This place was by far the best place and is now our stop when we go to SD. My daughters and I came in around lunch time and ordered from both the Breakfast and the Lunch menus. I had the Eggs Benedict. Daughter one had the Quiche while daughter two had the cheese burger.
First off, it was extremely difficult to choose as they had the most wonderful variety to choose from on the menu. I had champagne, and we all had fresh squeezed orange juice. My EB were perfect as was the quiche and the burger. The bread with butter and jam to start with was also beyond compare. It simply was everything you should expect from a French Gourmet Restaurant.
We ended this wonderful meal the a french strawberry crape with fruit. They were nice enough to brake up a single order of 2 into a single for each of us. I thought that was above and beyond.
After our great meal, we took home some of the sweet concoctions including fresh croissants, strudel, Macaroons, and other assorted home made deserts.
For the price and for the quality of the food and the overall experience, I would say this was an EXCELLENT VALUE!
One of the best waiters
Clever innovative menu, delicious food, and good service.
This little place doesn't lok like much from the outside, but is cozy on the inside. The fresh squeezed orange juice and fresh strawberry spread is a must as is everything else on their menu. The food was amazing and priced just right. Will definitely come back to try other things. They also cater for special events!
Good food and desserts! The sparkling house wine suited my taste perfectly. Our French waiter was so friendly and knowledgeable about the menu!
You can't beat the price fix menu, offering a wide variety of choices. There is something for everyone. Our waiter was welcoming, knowledgeable, and attentive despite the fact there wasn't a seat left in the restaurant. The food was excellent!
Wonderful food, as always, and it truly transports you to a little french restaurant in Provence!
The waiters are really nice & friendly... The food always comes out perfect. The only thing is they don't really pay attention to the comments i wrote on the RSVP. So i ask for the special request again face to face. They have a really good selection of wine & desserts too!
Service and food were great. You could tell they were busier than anticipated and possibly a little understaffed but they were all working well together. The restaurant is small but charming. We ordered the pear and goat cheese salad along with the French onion soup for our first course. The soup was amazing. The second course we had flat iron steak and lamb. Neither were the best id ever had but both were delicious none the less. Dessert was awesome. Their menu is set to be three courses and is extremely well priced. We will go back.
This is one of our favorite places to eat in all of San Diego. Excellently-flavored food, beautiful presentation (especially the desserts), attentive and cheerful service, good quantities, fair prices, and some of the best French onion soup we have had anywhere, including France. No negatives at all. We are becoming regulars here.
The first time I tried the food here, a friend had catered it at her home. It was so delicious I had to bring my family to the restaurant. The prix fixe menu has great choices. My family fell in love with it just as quick as I did. So when I have a chance, I brought really good friends over and they found love with you as well. The braised beef is so tender I had my knife in my hand ready to use. but the minute I touched it, it broke apart and as I put in my mouth it melted away. The perfect if not better than perfect braised beef ribs. And the waiter Stephan is the perfect French waiter. The restaurant hits it's five stars with him. Because of him you would think you were actually in France. All I can say is you have to try it at least once.
Amazing food, the 3 course meal is a steal, the ambiance is wonderful, and the service is amazing! The food was delicious and on point on every single dish. The bruschetta was something I never expected to come out that nicely with the wonderful herbs, fresh basil, marinated tomatoes, and crispy bread. The onion soup was light but flavorful and delicious. The flat iron steak had an impeccable flavor that I didn't expect. The swordfish was fresh, flaky, and tender. The creme brulee was creamy, flavorful, and delicious. The cake was really tasty too! Stephane was my server about two times now and he's been amazing! He is very knowledgeable, helpful, and makes sure that you're well taken care of. I've always felt at home with him and Laura's service. The ambiance is more intimate but very welcoming. I can't wait to come back again!
