The French Gourmet Ratings and Reviews
Always an extremely good value on French cuisine. Very good onion soup. The wife's pate was good but not much taste difference between the 3.(duck/chicken and a mix). My arugula salad was dressed very nicely and the goat cheese was a good compliment to it as were the grilled pears. The wife's filet was cooked perfectly mid rare as was my rack of lamb. Both were quite juicy and very well seasoned. The only miss is the veggies(broccoli and cauliflower) which come out steamed and cooked ok but not seasoned at all. A little bit would have gone a long way but we used the béarnaise sauce(leftover from the filet) for them. The napoleon and crème brulee were perfect and all in all a really good meal at a great price point for French.
We have eaten at the French Gourmet many times. The service was excellent and the food was delicious. My husband had the lamb and enjoyed it very much. They presented a special birthday cake which was a total surprise. We are never disappointed when we eat there.
My wife and I tried this restaurant based on the Open Table ratings and have a mixed review regarding the food and the service. This was our first time at the restaurant and did not know what to expect. However, we eat out often at similar restaurants and have developed a certain level of expectation for service and food quality and taste.
My wife had the bruschetta and the chicken marsala. The bruschetta was tasty and we enjoyed that. The chicken marsala wasn't up to what it should be. The chicken was over cooked and tough. The sauce was very good but it didn't do anything to make the chicken juicy as it should be. My wife had the Rose...don't bother.
I had the pate appetizer and the rabbit. The rabbit was very good, juicy and very tasty. Probably one of the best I've had in the county. The vegetables that came with it were cooked correctly and not under done as they so often are.. However, the pate let a lot to be desired. The dish offers three types and these had to be three of the least flavorable pates I have had. Also, the dish was set down in front of me and the server walked off without explaining which of the three was which plus there was no bread or cracker accompanying it. Our bread basket was empty and there was no inquiry if we wanted more in general or more to accompany the pate. I had the beaujolais which was very good.
Desert was good. Creme brulee and a chocolate mousse cake.
Servers were very nice but trying to get more water was a bigger effort than it should have been. They should have checked the bread as well when serving the pate. I know the three servers who worked in tandem were busy but it's these touches in service that often will bring someone back to give the restaurant another chance when the meal had such mixed results.
First the good. Food is again excellent. It has been up and down but now definitely much better. At end of day that is what matters. Ok, now the negatives. They are always one person short on thei wait staff. Every time I'm there it's the same frustrating issue with slow service. Not bad service, the people working are doing their best. But they are one person short. Also the room can be so noisy. But I guess I'm not allowed to complain about that. I can complain though about the ancient bathrooms that desperately need a make over
Though we live in Wisconsin, we've been coming to The French Gourmet since 2003 when our son started at UCSD and we've never been disappointed, whether with the food or the prompt, personable service. And the prix fixe menu is a true bargain. We've enjoyed several other French restaurants in San Diego, in Seattle, and at L'Etoile back home Madison (yes, Wisconsin does have a French restaurant!) -- but none is any better for all around dining than The French Gourmet.
Just discovered this gem in Pacific Beach. Food and service are fantastic. I had calfs liver and my friend had the rabbit, wonderful sauces on both, came with an arugula/pear/goat cheese salad , mashed potatoes and string beans as well as two delicious desserts. Price was around 30.00 a piece ordered from pre-fixe menu with many tempting selections. One of the best meals we've had in quite a while. Will definitely return
We were not impressed with any thing. Appetizer was either plane or salty, auntrey was ok,and desert were overly sweet and I was surprised that they serve carrot cake! It is not French! After tax and tip, I paid more than $85 for two. It's not worth for the price. It was a very disappointing experience...
One of the best food values in San Diego, the French Gourmet never fails to offer a great dining experience. Starting off with good French bread, then fine appetizers, including the salad, escargot and pate we had, on to the rabbit, monkfish and ratatouille entrees, everything was well-prepared and tasty. Hard to go wrong here.
Everything about this meal was wonderful. The warm French bread brought to the table was very tasty. We decided on the prix fix menu and were not disappointed in any way. The mussels were large and flavorful in a delicious sauce, the French onion soup was loaded with cheese and very tasty too. Both of our salmon entrées were cooked perfectly and the potato sides and asparagus were as well. The salmon melted in our mouths. Cheesecake and a chocolate cake were our choices for dessert and both wonderful. The wines were very reasonably priced. The waitstaff couldn't have been nicer or more professional. A wonderful outing!
I was really looking forward to having a wonderful Valentine's Day dinner at the French Gourmet. They have an excellent reputation for excellent food, as I experienced first hand when they catered our wedding and when I have lunched at the restaurant. However, we were very disappointed in our dinner experience the other night. Although the service was superb, the food didn't measure up. For a pre fixe menu at $70 pp, I really felt gyped. First off, the appetizer was pathetic. They brought a tiny quiche, an escargot, and a teeny weeny bruschetta all of which we were supposed to divide into two to share. Really? My next course was risotto and it was just so so. My husband had the crab cake which tasted fishy. Our main courses were surf and turf for me and chicken breast rolled around asparagus for him. My lobster was mushy and rather tasteless, but the steak was excellent. My husband's chicken was also excellent. However, we both ordered fingerling potatoes and green beans, which were both seriously undercooked. We couldn't even eat them. We didn't want to make a fuss, it being Valentine's Day and we didn't want to ruin the mood. Dessert was delicious, a little heart-shaped chocolate cake to share. And I was given a long stemmed red rose. But these niceties didn't make up for a lackluster dinner that for us was pretty pricey.
Wonderful meal. 3-course prix fixed menu is about the best value in all of San Diego. This time we had escargot to start and then calves liver - perfectly done. Desserts were creme brûlée and a fabulous Napoleon. Service was friendly and professional. Hard to beat.
We had reservations at 7:15pm and arrived promptly but after 30 mins of waiting to be seated we left (7:45pm). From the very beginning the staff advised us that it would only be a few minutes for our table to be ready (and we were told this repeatedly by multiple staff members) which was horribly inaccurate. When I mentioned to the wait staff that we would be leaving since we had waited too long given we had a reservation they could clearly not honor - the staff member was full of excuses about no one leaving their tables - I told him very politely and quietly this is really disappointing and we would never be back - he just rolled his eyes!!! Your staff is poorly trained and your inept ability to estimate table time is a disgrace!!! It should also be noted that another couple came in and waited 5mins and the staff never said a thing to them - no greetings or otherwise - and they just left.
Small place but very pleasant decor. Service was prompt and polite. Nose level increases as tables fill up but still able to hold a conversation. Lots of delicious desserts in the front case which may or may not be available with the prix fix price. Ask. Menu is heavy on meat choices but there are a couple of non meat dishes. The dishes we had we're very nice but i hesitate to call them excellent. There is a small parking lot next door so you may be able to avoid street parking
We've been to the French Gourmet many times and chose it again to celebrate two birthdays. We also had a special request for soft food for one person with a loose tooth. Once again, the French Gourmet met and exceeded our expectations. The food was superb, the prices reasonable, the service excellent and good humored. The birthday cake with two candles was just right. I even had some filet mignon to take home! We recommend the restaurant and bakery highly and will certainly be back again.
Always delicious food with excellent service by Charlie and Laura. The onion soup is authentic, like they serve in France, and so good. Not overly salty like other places. I have eaten here for lunch and dinner and have always been very satisfied. Nice atmosphere in a small restaurant (which I prefer). I will try breakfast soon as the menu looks enticing. Everything is so fresh and tasty.
