The French Gourmet Ratings and Reviews
This is a wonderful place, reminding me of a small neighborhood bistro in Paris. The place is small, the tables close together and the atmosphere very friendly. We will definitely be back again and again.
The food is classic french comfort food. And the service is excellent. Special note- the baguette was to die for! Perfectly done with a super-thin light crust - the best since the last visit to Europe.
Why oh why did I wait so many years to come here! My friend and I made a revservation for 5:30 and met at the restaurant at around 4:30pm to take a walk before we ate. What a perfect idea! We both kept commenting on how delicious the food was and the wait staff attentive and helpful. Do have the onion soup. A good French restaurant has yummy onion soup and The French Gourmet did not disappoint. Salmon was delish and the Chicken dish crispy and perfectly done. If you can have desert. If you can...
We have eaten at the French Gourmet for eight years and in the last two years, the restaurant has changed, not for the better. We will not be back after waiting 55 minutes for our dinner the other night with a waiter more concerned with setting tables than taking care of his patrons.
My third time at The French Gourmet and each a time the food was delicious and the service beyond friendly. Do not expect to be in and out in a hurry, a good meal takes time, this is old world class food and is well worth the wait, so meanwhile enjoy the charcuterie board with the delicious fresh baked bread and butter.
The French Gourmet is very much a place for locals. Very cute and quaint, but the vibe from the other diners was not overly welcoming to a large-ish group of outsiders. Nevertheless, the service provided was good. The food delivery a bit slow (but I think the size of our group may have overtaxed the kitchen a tad). The au gratin potatoes were tasty but heavily salted. The bouillabaisse was very lightly salted/seasoned with a healthy selection of fish. I enjoyed the pear and arugula salad. The escargot were amazing! The raspberry tart and napoleon pastry were delicious. All in all, I think this restaurant is would be an excellent choice for a quiet dinner for two.
Stopped here on short notice, they offer a prix fixe dinner which is a very good value. The food was good not great and the venue is okay but could use a bit of sprucing up. The wait staff are friendly and reasonably professional but did disappear for long periods of time even though it was a Wednesday night and not crowded.
All in all it was middle of the road, and I am not sure that we would return again.
Been coming here for years. The bread there is amazing, and they're smart and served softened (room temperature) butter with it. Consistently good food, and super nice friendly staff. Check out their deli/bakery. I got some good treats for mom and dad, and a Mushroom Quiche to eat later which was delicious.
We came for our anniversary, the ambiance was great and the food was delicious. They have a restaurant week-esque deal where you can choose an appetizer, main course and desert for $30 which is an awesome value for the delicious food. The service was funny and friendly and we enjoyed a nice quiet table to celebrate
Always a favorite when in the area! Great food, good, service and wines! Had the Escargot and the Salmon - both prepared perfectly and flavorful! My husband had French Onion soup and lamb chops. Both excellent!' Definitely recommend the French Gourmet when in Pacific Beach!!
As always, the quality of the food was wonderful. Everything was very fresh and prepared just as we asked. Service was attentive but not intrusive which always a plus. And the desserts were really just a delight. Been many times and hope to go again just as often.
Wonderful place to have a dinner with a couple of people. Not big but that's part of the intimate, French appeal. The food was amazing! Had the onion soup, filet mignon, and creme brûlée. Everything tasted so fresh, even the bread was amazing! Service was great and everyone was very nice! Go, you won't regret it
We really enjoyed our experience! We had a few issues with the meat having to be sent back.. but it seemed like a strange cut and nothing wrong with the way it was cut. The staff went above and beyond to make sure we were happy with our meals and comped a part of it to make sure we were satisfied. Overall we had a really great time and I would definitely recommend this restaurant.
Unfortunately, the food just was not very good. I really expected (much) more from such a highly rated restaurant. Additionally, as I looked around the dining area, I couldn't help but notice that every single entree came with the same exact two sides: roasted potatoes and a carrot broccoli medley. Whether you ordered a seafood crepe or lamb (as my wife and I did, respectively) or the filet mignon, it was like looking at cookie-cutter carbon copy food at every table. The dishes just all lacked any originality and were bland, especially my wife's crepe. Perhaps it was because my wife and I went during restaurant week, but the whole experience really felt like they just phoned this one in. The one thing I must compliment them for, however, was that the waiter removed our wines from the bill upon learning that my wife was not happy with her dish. That was a kind gesture since it ended up saving us more than the cost of her entree.
We savored the filet of beef with Berniase sauce. Bread was fresh and crisp, oignon soup was hot , tasty and enclosed in a rather thin cover o f Swiss cheese. Regrettably there is still no white zin available but my friend thoroughly enjoyed her white French wine and I, my coffee. We have enjoyed this restaurant for years and look forward to our continued visits.
