The French Gourmet
Breakfast and Lunch served daily; Dinner Tuesday-Saturday after 4pm.
Valentine’s Day awesome food and lovely experience.
I love French Gourmet and I think it is a hidden gem. The food was really tasty and creative. I was happy to enjoy dinner there for first time. I’ve been many times for breakfast and lunch but now I will consider it as a good dinner option.
Wonderful food, service, detail, friendliness, overall, était délicieux.
Delicious food, excellent service, moderate price- loved the 3 course meal option. All good.
Great meal. Prix fixe is a super deal. Traditional escargot to start, followed by cassoulet and salmon Dijonnaise, and choice of decadent desserts. Given the food quality and service, very hard to beat. A favorite of ours for years.
Great food, efficient staff. Nice wine selection
The restaurant is back! We were there several months ago and were very disappointed. The service was very slow, the food was nothing memorable. I am very happy to say that they straightened out the difficulties and the food is now wonderful again. The escargot is tender and delicious. The salad was light and fresh. The salmon was perfectly cooked with the right amount of sauce. The short ribs were easy to cut with a fork and very tasty. The desserts were even better than before. The only things that are a bit disappointing is that my favorite duck was removed from the menu and the prix fixe dinner is now more expensive. We will go back now that they food is the great food that we have always loved about this restaurant.
Once again the French Gourmet lived up to my expectation of an outstanding dinner. We usually go for the fixed price dinner options, but this time decided to try other entrees. We were glad we did! The Filet Mignon and Sete Scallops were excellent choices!
Wonderful food combined with great wait staff....Save room for dessert, I could not decide and took an order home.
Excellent service and fantastic food we all had a wonderful time
Portions very small and short ribs dry and tasteless. Salmon good. Waiter very good.
Very nice neighborhood restaurant. Very good food. Would go back again. Saturday was packed, try a weeknight.
Bechamel sauce too thin. Duck entree’ portion that of tapas portions. Espresso served cold and barely covered the bottom of demitasse. This is actually French Vietnamese food. Desserts were flawless. Come for dessert, skip the rest.
I CONSIDER MYSELF A REGULAR TO THIS RESTAURANT. WE WENT LAST NIGHT AND THE SERVICE WAS A LITTLE SLOW, BREAD WAS COLD WHEN OFFERED HOT AND CRISPY. THE WAITER WAS NOT ACCOMMODATING AT ALL WHEN WE ASKED TO CHANGE TABLES BECAUSE IT WAS VERY COLD.
MY RIBS WERE TASTELESS, AND THE WINE SELECTION IS SMALLER EVERY TIME.
We went for lunch and I have dined here for both lunch and dinner in the past. French gourmet never disappoints. Service staff are excellent and friendly, never too much of a wait and food was superb as always.
Always a good meal here. An affordable treat for date night.
As usual the food is outstanding and the service attentive. We enjoyed the salmon with bernaise and the duck. Of special mention is the new (to us) dessert ... the "green thing" (avocado with lots of chocolate). Outstanding!
We went during restaurant week. Our dinners were delicious. The menu was slightly different than what had been advertised. Our waiter must have been new. He could not tell us how one of the appetizers was prepared and did not know what lardon was.
Always enjoy a meal at The French Gourmet. We were a little disappointed that - because it was restaurant week - we did not have the option of ordering off the regular menu. There were yummy choices, but when I've dined at other places during Restaurant Week those restaurants offered an either/or option. That said - the Eggs Benedict was fabulous - and they served their fabulous crusty bread with preserves that I always look forward to.
I was happy to eat at this restaurant again. They are not located close to me but going there during Restaurant Week was well worth the drive. Every aspect of our meal was excellent.
Great food. Good wine. We were celebrating a birthday. Nice ambience.
Sadly, we often equate French restaurants with snooty waiters, hit or miss food quality and high prices. Well, not here! The French Gourmet has superb food. Their onion soup was perhaps the best I've had, even from living in Europe and travelling extensively there. The entrees (flank steak and cassoulet with duck) were good portions (not over or underwhelming) and the desserts exquisite (creme brulee and chocolate torte with raspberries). The wait staff on our visit were not French, which is perhaps why they were so friendly, properly attentive and helpful. The wine selection is quite limited but our white wine was just right and properly chilled at our table. Unique is that this restaurant is part of a French bakery; in fact, you walk in through the bakery to enter the dining area. Fixed price menus are available, about $30 for a three course dinner. Try this place. It is magnifique!
We'll never come back for restaurant week again. It was grim. The escargot cried for garlic, but the duck was good. There were only two waitresses for the whole restaurant and it was packed. Service was terrible and all the dishes were pre-made and just heated up.
As French people we wanted to try and the food was delicious! From the beginning to the end!
A little bad point for the baguette though that was commercial!
Restaurant Week allowed me to take my granddaughters. It was a wonderful experience for all of us.
Food servings as lot smaller than in past visits plus a lot of items taken off
Oh well hope it doesn’t continue
Eggs Benedict and Champagne - great value and friendly service.
This is truly a hidden gem. I’ve lived in San Diego for 12 years and only ended up here because my mom, who was visiting, found it through researching online.
Fantastic value. The food is AMAZING and the wine prices and selection are outstanding. So not miss out on this experience!
Good place for business lunch
Very enjoyable French restaurant with a nice menu, ambiance and service. Have been several times!!
Wine list made up of wines chosen from a convenience store should have been the tip-off, but I was hungry so stayed. Onion soup tasted canned with huge slab of Monterrey Jack cheese in it. Salad full of sprouts. The entree tasted like a frozen dinner that had been microwaved. Seriously this may have been my worst French restaurant dining experience ever.
Our entire experience was awesome. The food was superb.
Always good, love the french bread and the quiche.
Excellent Traditional French food. Good quality ingredients and delicious preparation. Very attentive service. Quiet atmosphere. One of the better if less recognized restaurants in San Diego. Highly recommend.
This was our go-to place for the last 7 years, it was always a reliably good dinner for a reasonable price. Until recently, when we noticed the portions had shrunk to literally HALF their prior size while the prices remained the same. The waiters confirmed that yep, they’ve gone to smaller portions. So unfortunately the French gourmet is no longer a good value or a good option, in my opinion. How unfortunate.
Great dining experience despite staff being short a server. Crew just upped the pace and took care of everyone. Place only had one empty table.
Never knew this place existed until we dined here on Saturday. I couldn't decide between the beef wellington special, the duck, or the lamb...now I have to go back multiple times to try it all. Sooo satisfied with everything, the food, the servers/service, the atmosphere, AND the price point!!! They ran out of the double chocolate croissant so I have to make it a point to try it next time :)
My favorite go to restaurant for any special occasion in La Jolla
Impeccable salmon in bernaise sauce, with lovely side veggies and a nice pilaf. The dining room is in the back of a bakery/European grocery storefront, so a bit funky, but comfy enough for the wonderful food.
