The Flying V at Loews Ventana Canyon Resort Ratings and Reviews
We arrived 15 minutes early for our reservation and were seated immediately. Our server Wyatt was courteous and friendly and his suggestions and knowledge facilitated a memorable dinner. I ordered the NY strip steak which was done perfectly and I asked Wyatt to bring me a cabernet. He supplied an excellent choice for that steak, a Justin cab, I believe. My wife had the special for the evening which was a creative rendition of shrimp, and she actually cleaned her plate! This is an extraordinary testimony to the flavor of her dinner. We will definitely return next time we are in Tucson.
Birthday celebration on the patio- being on the patio was great. We sat about 15 minutes before anyone took our drink order and sat with empty water glasses for most of the meal. Food was delicious. Service could be much better based on prices and being guests at the hotel. The hotel staff are much better.
Beautiful restaurant and small but good menu with nice choices. We had the guacamole to start which was very good. My husband had the special which was tuna on orzo pasta with wasabi drizzle. It was beautiful presentation but wasabi "drizzle" was too heavy handed in application and therefore overpowered the entire dish. I had ribs which were fair. The cornbread was delicious. Our server was very new apparently and there were a few hiccups (we didn't order entrees until we had been at restaurant for 50 minutes, wasn't knowledgeable about beer menu). If you are at resort, it is good option although I preferred the cayon cafe. I certainly wouldn't drive far to eat there.
Spectacular location in the Foothills and cool "elegant rustic" decor make the ambiance special at Flying V. A bit on the pricey side, with tableside guacamole at $18, excellent calamari starter at $16, creative eggplant entree at $25 and ahi tuna entree at $35. The tuna was nicely spiced and accompaniments were tasty and different, but tuna was unexpectedly cool. Free birthday crime brûlée was a nice touch. Service was on the slow side, but friendly and knowledgeable.
We had a lovely dinner at the Flying V. We were staying at the Loews Ventana Canyon Resort so it was so convenient to walk across the parking lot to the restaurant. We could both have cocktails and not worry about driving. We started out with cocktails which were great. I had one of their special Cosmos and it was delicious. My husband had a martini and said it was great too. We then had an appetizer of calamari which we wouldn't have needed if we had known how wonderful their corn bread and crackers were. I had salmon for my entrée and it was cooked just how I like it and my husband had the ribs which were great. The meat fell off the bone and was so tender. We ended the evening with coffee. Our server Jon was the best. He worked so hard for us and all of the tables around us. He was friendly and attentive but also let us enjoy the evening and we never felt rushed.
We brought our daughter, who attends U of A, and 2 friends here for her birthday dinner. Our server was excellent and made sure our daughter's creme brulee had birthday candles! I highly recommend the prawns appetizer and the New York strip steak for a main course.
Unfortunately this time was there after dark so not able to take advantage of the relaxing view though we could see the lights reflecting on the water. The parking can be hard to come by as they share it with the resort but we found one. Inside there is a nice ambiance. There is a fireplace that would be nice in cooler weather. The restaurant was not very crowded when we were there so it was quiet. The waiter provided good service and was helpful in making our choices. For the appetizer, had the prawns which was a really good dish-shrimp cooked nicely and on a bed of polenta. The entree I had was the diver scallops which were large, cooked just right and very tasty. It was a relaxing and enjoyable meal.
So glad they decided to open the patio. Had visitors from Canada celebrating my birthday and we had the best time. "JUST BE CAREFUL" Portions are large and if you want to share some appetizers, select a "smaller version of the ribs" and share.....sauce on the side. Jicama slaw is more red cabbage than Jicama and that one needs work.
Wonderful short-rib tacos with plenty of lime and avocado. The burger was adequate, but the fries were inedible. There should be home-made fries at this restaurant rather than the previously frozen, woody stuff they serve. Great pickle. Great view. Excellent service
My wife and I visit the Flying V often and always enjoy our dinner either inside or outside. We had a group of 7 this trip and seating was on the patio as requested. View of the golf course, pond, fish and ambiance of watching the sunset are worth the drive and dinner.
We ordered guacamole for the table. Hostess was very pleasant announcing what was in the mix and if there were any ingredients anyone cared to leave out. We requested two orders for the group. I was surprised how quick the hostess mixed and served us without really engaging the group more as we've experienced in past visits. Guacamole is still one of the best dishes on your menu and was a hit with all couples as an appetizer!
Service was outstanding! However at sunset, we requested candles for our table as it was getting dark and more difficult to see and talk with each other. Candles were not brought to the table until after the food was served making it difficult to see our plates and carry on conversations.
Primary entrees were delicious...I ordered the pleasant, my wife ordered the New York Strip. However, we were both disappointed because there were few vegetables on either of our plates. My pleasant for example was on top of a bed of mash potatoes with only one tiny sweet potato and onion side although I was having difficulty seeing my plate since there weren't candles on the table yet!! For the price, $36, I expected more !! My wife's NY Strip lacked sufficient veggies as well...only a small baked potato and 4 asparagus at $40.
We plan to return and recommend your restaurant to our friends. Everyone in our group had positive things to say about their visit and their meal experience. Again, would recommend beefing up the veggies on everyone's plate to improve food pricing value!
