Food was mediocre. Had the Brussels sprouts, which were drenched in vinaigrette. Gnocchi was a bit tasteless. My boyfriend had the steak and fries which was delicious, presentation was not great. Overall for the price, not with it. Would go back for cocktails at the bar which was really cool
Nice room reminiscent of a Parisian brasserie. Golds, mirrors and heavy curtains compliment an appealing bar.
The food was fine, the hangar steak tasty if not a bit salty. Brussel sprouts a bit over dressed and the salad did not quite cohere, it was barely the sum of it's parts.
Convenient to an event we attended, Fly Trap was satisfying but certainly not worth a detour.
Sad to see this spot go downhill. The food was just okay but not near as flavorful or as inspired as it used to be with Hass at the ehlm brining great middle eastern spices and cooking methods. We had one very good waiter the others seemed upset that we were there and did not seem to be able to handle a moderately busy spot.
Great spot with wonderful food, service and ambiance. Unique touch - the story like hand written descriptions of the featured wines. Shared the avocado salad which had just the right amount of citrus, my friend had the oven roasted cartaccio - when our waitperson cut open the parchment paper the aroma that was released was so fragrant. I had the 14 hr braised brisket which was very flavorful and filling. My third time to the Fly Trap for dinner and have been pleased with each experience.
Very nice, pleasant evening at the Fly Trap. Interesting cocktails to start. Very nice menu with a nice mixture of small plates and larger meals. The risotto was creamy and flavorful and got better with every bite. The twice cooked brisket papperdelle was a nice mixture of flavors, sweet, savory, bitter broccoli rabe. Excellent wine list.
The staff was a little overbearing/incessant. A guy came by every few minutes to ask if everything was ok and we didn't even have food on the table. And, the server's explanations were not really sincere. Lastly, the food was good but very overpriced... $20 for pasta? I have had better pasta in an authentic Italian restaurant for cheaper.
The food and drink at Fly Trap are still noteworthy but the noise level at happy hour makes it impossible to have a conversation without shouting. There is a side room that is much quieter but the evening we were there it was taken over by a large dinner group so we took a table in the back corner, hoping it would cut down the noise level. Not noticeably. It was a little bit quieter by the time we left at 7 pm for the theater.
We were seated in the bar even though we had reservations, that were made well in advance. The service was mediocre albeit that the waitress was amicable. The menu is rather spartan, which is okay, but know that people will expect each dish to be scrumptious. With that said, I thought the food was acceptable not excellent. I would go back and try this place for happy hour and light bites.
Had recently watched an very positive account of The Fly Trap on KQED's 'Check Please' in which the reviewers all commented on the wonderful Persian-inspired food. So we were surprised on arrival to find a dinner menu devoid of Persian dishes. Then the Maitre D' explained that the Persian owner for many years had sold the restaurant 6 months earlier. So I guess we had watched a re-run of the original show. Nevertheless, our party of four all enjoyed the lively ambience of the bar followed by a meal in the relatively quiet dining room.
Service was friendly and efficient, cocktails served in the bar were excellent, the menu was varied in scope and the food quality very good.
I've honestly rarely visited the restaurant since their new ownership, and my wife and I decided to give it another go. All of the signature dishes are just not as good, and quite frankly the food is subpar now for the price you pay. I'd be happy if everything was cheaper, or if the food quality went back to the level it was at prior to the ownership change. I also greatly miss the rotating menu.
Came to the Fly Trap for birthday dinner with my husband. The vibe is a nice mix of posh and laid back. Our drinks were beautiful, well-crafted, and STRONG... heads up! Dinner was excellent, I asked for gluten-free options and easily half the menu was available to me. This is a HUGE bonus as sometimes staying GF limits you to one or two items. Drew a happy picture on our comment card, had a great time. Will return.
This was our favorite go to place for dinner before events at Yerba Buena, the food was good but certainly not great this time and the noise level was so high it was almost impossible to talk. Our server was the exception to an otherwise poor dining experience.
I'm unsure if Valentine's Day dinner is a good or bad time to judge a restaurants performance, but with all tables full, the staff seemed to be struggling. The waiter simply had too many tables to give any kind of service. As a result, the hostess volunteered to take our order after the menus had been in front of us for almost 30 minutes. The first three small dishes arrived soon after that, the plates were cleared after we finished those and then the waiter finally reappeared to offer us the dessert menu before the larger main course dishes had yet to arrive. The plates are meant to be shared, but it was difficult to tell how much food to order, and ordering additional food with the busy staff was just not possible.
Many restaurants offer a pre-fixe menu on known busy nights. I think that would have been the wise choice here.
Nice discovery. Possibly priced fairly for SF. Menu was a bit limited. Cuisine was creative and delicious. Not as fancy as I expected, in fact it's pretty casual. The tables were too close together for me...not a place for private conversations. My cocktail (Manhattan straight up) was served in an old style chamagne glass, instead of a martini glass, which I didn't like. No bread served or offered. With two appetizers, two entrees, one side, two cocktails, one coffee and a soda plus 20% tip, the meal seemed pricey at $170.00 for two people, it felt about $50 too much for what we got. Portions were not large. Lots of large party women's get-togethers the night I was there.
Strong point: I'd go back to eat at the bar and order appetizers if I were in town visiting solo and wanted to try a quiet local place. Especially if I were a woman.

Food is competently cooked, but lacks the flair and imagination of previous visits (this is about my 15th time of eating here). Menu is typical Californian cuisine, without flair or innovation
It's always kinda loud here - no complaints, but if you're looking for a quiet romantic dinner a deux you might want to look elsewhere
Food was decent, although it's been spotty over the course of a couple of visits. But noise level makes it very difficult to have a conversation. Great place for a drink with friends - but not for dinner if you want to exchange more than a couple of words.
