The Fish Shack Ratings and Reviews
This is our 2nd time at Fish Shack. The food is good and the service excellent. We just noticed that the table arrangement is a bit squeeze that you would hear the other table's conversation. Getting out to go to the washroom means you're elbow to elbow with the guests on the other table. But we came for the food which is excellent!
Met my friend for pre-concert dinner. Not a good choice for us as we are at the older end of the age spectrum and it seemed like the majority of patrons were young people. The Fish Shack was very noisy but to be fair it was the happy hour. We had calamari to start and it was not good as it was very rubbery and tough. The pot of mussels was nice and the broth they came with was delicious. Didn't have dessert as we had to leave to go to the Orpheum.
Ordered big catch and oysters.Cocktail menu is pretty decent though. Oysters are all right. Big catch contains lobster, crab, snow crab, clams, etc. The clams, crab, and mussels weren't fresh, had funny smell. The bowl of seafood came out cold, and not really any buttery flavour. Whole bill including a wine and a beer is $110 plus tips, and likely would not come back for big or small catch.
Servers were good as were oysters. I ordered clam chowder in bread bowl. Chowder was literally cold and bread was so rock hard I couldnt cut through it with a knife & fork. Bathrooms were dirty. Used to be a favorite "good value" type spot. Will not likely return.
I’m an international visitor. I don’t know what sort of food would be good in Vancouver. I thought that seafood would be good and the Fish Shack should be good at seafood. We had the $38.50 pp seafood bowl but unfortunately all but the mussels and clams had no freshness and no flavor. There was lobster, three types of crab, and prawns- all tasted like cardboard. I think it must be frozen stuff. It could be that I’m not a local person and I should have known better than to order these things in winter. I don’t know. Highlight of the meal was the brussel sprouts- deep fried, sprinkled with Parmesan- delicious. $100 for seafood bowl for two and one glass of wine.
The food was excellent and the service outstanding. Haley was one of the best servers we've experienced in a long time...congrats on hiring such a quality server. My only "complaint" was the music was a bit too loud to carry on a conversations. Other than that we will return here when we return to Vancouver.
Keep up the good work!
Our reservation was to celebrate 2 birthday and an anniversary, and the servers and cooks were just fantastic. The mixed seafood platters were really good. The fish and chips were quite greasy, but tasty. The drinks were excellent, and the appies were spot-on. Thank you for making it memorable!
Absolutely awesome, my brother and I are from Chilliwack and my sister and her husband came down from Fort Fraser, northern BC. Seafood is all of ours favourite food. This is why I made reservations for lunch here. We ate, we had a glass of wine. My brother ordered a Caesar and it was topped with a fresh oyster on the half shell, a fresh prawn and a few other things. It was amazing!! The food was awesome, from the fish Taco's , Steamed Clams , and Small Catch to the Caesar Salad and crusty bread, we were not disappointed at all. The service was excellent! Great value as well. Although it was busy we did not feel rushed and the visit with my family could not have been better! I highly recommend The Fish Shack to anyone for any occasion.
Thank you Fish Shack!
The food was great we felt that the tables were very close together so we were unable to have a conversation without the other table hearing it was also very loud and we got to enjoy our neighbors conversation over ours I think that if there was more space between the tables it would be much more enjoyable night
My daughter and I went specifically for the seafood boil for two. There were not many muscles, clams and maybe 8 prawns and half a snow crab each (that was not fresh) as the meat inside was pretty dried out and not much in either the body or the legs. There was only 1 cob on the corn cut in 4 and a lot of potatoes. For price it was not work it. They need to check out the Crab Pot in Seattle now that is seafood boil and a half (3) times the size we got here. Won't be eating there again. The one good thing was the service was good,
Popular spot and very lively. Food and service were good but crowded even on a Wednesday night. The area is a bit seedy but doesn’t seem to discourage patrons of this place. Lots of young people. Two guys next to us ate 48 oysters, nothing else except beer.
We had booked a table but still had to wait as the table wasn't ready. It was very noisy and customers around us were complaining about the long wait for their food. After being seated we waited a long time for the server to come and take our order and when the food came one of the dishes which was made up of 3 components only had 2 on the plate so we had to attract the attention of the server who went and brought back a side dish of the missing component by which time the original meal was cold.
Very disappointing. Fish ( Cod) and chips tough and dried out (left over from lunch?). Oysters fresh but unattractively presented with tasteless sauces. Snow crab quite good but needed better implements to deal with it. Ambience a bit on the rough side. Noisy.
My daughter and I were in van for the Metallica concert and we are both celiacs. She wanted seafood so I googled seafood restaurants around the area we were staying and you popped up! I was so excited to see gluten free fish and chips! I said oh yes we are going! Very tasty 😋I'm very happy that BC has so many restaurants that are accomadating. We are from AB and we do not have very tasty gluten friendly places to eat out at. We will be back! Thank you so much!
Previously came here with my good friend(s) and raced about it (this was during the weekday) and then we saw on Sundays there was a great deal for steamers! I brought 3 of my closest friends to the Fish Shack because the food was pretty fresh in comparison to other seafood locations in Vancouver. When we had our waitress come over to serve us, we asked about the $29.95 deal with the steamers worked ( we pretty much had our hearts set on this) and just wanted to double check with her. One of my friends and I asked if there was limitations on it or if there was any restrictions on what we could and couldn’t order and our server told us no. Dinner service was good, a little slow but it looked like they were short on staff- but when it came to the bill, we were charged how it was reg prices on the menu not the $29.95/person. We inquired about it to our waitress and that’s when she went through how it was written and explained throughly on the menu- each person could only have 1lb/each and it could only be the Classic flavour. She also reiterated back to us how it was written on the fine print on the menu. That of course is our fault for not double checking the menu and trusted the words of the waitress since we made sure to clarify. Yet clearly trusting the waitress and not double checking ourselves was the wrong thing to do. For us, not to make matters worse, but she lightly apologized that it was misleading and that it was stated in the fine print. Definitely did not seem like she cared at all for she only continued to ask for our payment process.
sorry did not realize it was a grungy looking cafeteria kind of place. food was okay nothing to write home about salmon fish and chips too much batter on fish. blackened fish tacos should emphasize uncooked. friend was shocked sent it back to have fish cooked but still said tacos did not taste great compared to tacos offered at white spot. i felt tables were too close to each other.
Came from out of town and chose this place for my birthday dinner. Table of 10. The food was amazing. Really fresh seafood. Our waitress was really great and accommodating. The only negative was my friend called ahead as she had a birthday cake for me and always calls the restaurant ahead as some places vary if they allow outside desserts or not. She spoke with someone at the desk who said it was no problem so she went ahead and had to cake brought in. The manager came over and didn't handle the situation well. Denied that someone would say it was ok. We wouldn't have brought the cake from across town if it was a problem. Disappointed with the way management handled the situation but food and our specific server was great!
