About The Federal Restaurant & Bar
Built by Samuel Converse in 1862, the impressive Greek revival structure at 135 Cooper Street in Agawam, Massachusetts became home to the Federal Hill Club in 1936. under the management of its owners the Moretti family, that establishment remained a premiere restaurant for over fifty years. The Federal's current owners Michael Presnal and Ralph Santaniello easily integrate the white linen elegance of that bygone era with a fresh and innovative "new american" cuisine that is perfectly prepared and impeccably served. strong Italian and French influences inspire the contemporary culinary style of Chef Presnal in dishes such as his red beet risotto, burnt tangerine glazed cod, and white-chocolate panna cotta. The Federal is dressed up as a special occasion restaurant, but is sociable and affordable enough for every occasion. It enjoys a dedicated following of appreciative diners from New York to Boston.

The Federal Restaurant & Bar Ratings and Reviews
The Feferal is one of our gems in this area. We had very good food and our waiter , Matthew , was excellent. The pork chop was tasty, the monkfish very fresh and well-prepared, and the creme brûlée divine.
Unfortunately, a large party of 14 was near us so the noise level was excessive. Parties this large should be in a private room or seated near the back of the dining room to prevent discomfort to others.
We always enjoy dinner here and will return.
The waitress was the most pushy and rude waitress we have ever encountered. We weren't ready to order and she kept coming back every two minutes asking if we were ready but offered to give us more time. We've never felt so pushed and uncomfortable. Was embarrassed with the friends we brought there for the first time. Also the noise level was so loud we couldn't hear each other communicate. I have reservations there again on November 18 th and are seriously thinking of cancelling them.
In town for a last dinner with son who was leaving for USAF. Unfamiliar with area this restaurant came up on search and menu looked good and decent reviews. The experience was phenomenal. Chef choice plate and a very attentive manager and waiter (Sean) made the night rememberable for all of us. I'll be making Federal my go to stop whenever I'm in the area.
The Federal is one of our favorite special dining places. We had a great meal there for the last night of our vacation. We were looking forward to the risotto balls but instead were given a sampling of popcorn with truffle powder and butter. Not something I would have asked for prior to a dinner and would see that more as a substitute for the cotton candy at the end of the meal they provide. I tried the Caesar salad which was excellent. and the Bolognese was filled with hearty rigatoni, cheesy goodness and a spoonful of marscapone to add to the richness. My husband had a dinner special which was cod which he said was cooked just as it should be. I always hate to say no to dessert so the lemon sorbet was the perfect sweet, refreshing but light touch to the end of our meal. We will return again and again!
We were unfortunately seated very closely to three other tables despite the rest of the restaurant being empty. We would have preferred a quieter location given it was our wedding anniversary (which we had marked on our reservation). As we were the first couple to be seated, we did not ask to move by the point the other tables were seated. Usually we love the Federal, but the ambiance of this visit was not great.
We love the Federal! We are never disappointed by the taste and quality of the food. However, it took 30 minutes to receive our meal and we thought that was too long to wait.
We absolutely miss the zucchini matchsticks that use to be on the menu. And we miss the complimentary " bucket of balls". No need for the popcorn, you're not the "99".
Waitstaff is always wonderful!
I chose this as a location for a first date which I had never met in person. Service was great and server went to great lengths to explain how special items were prepared. Many items came from their own garden which could be seen from our table. Food and service were fantastic and I won't complain about pricing because you get what you are willing to pay for. Meal arrived quickly and my cocktail was "strong enough to defend itself" very much to my liking. It was such a pleasant experience that the text from my date the following day called it the best first date ever. Let's score The Federal with an A+
