About The Federal Restaurant & Bar
Built by Samuel Converse in 1862, the impressive Greek revival structure at 135 Cooper Street in Agawam, Massachusetts became home to the Federal Hill Club in 1936. under the management of its owners the Moretti family, that establishment remained a premiere restaurant for over fifty years. The Federal's current owners Michael Presnal and Ralph Santaniello easily integrate the white linen elegance of that bygone era with a fresh and innovative "new american" cuisine that is perfectly prepared and impeccably served. strong Italian and French influences inspire the contemporary culinary style of Chef Presnal in dishes such as his red beet risotto, burnt tangerine glazed cod, and white-chocolate panna cotta. The Federal is dressed up as a special occasion restaurant, but is sociable and affordable enough for every occasion. It enjoys a dedicated following of appreciative diners from New York to Boston.

The Federal Restaurant & Bar Ratings and Reviews
Don't let the old-fashioned ambience fool you. The food is not your typical boring staples. Definitely recommend the sashimi style sushi and the "pot" brownie. My only criticism is that the cocktails were just meh. I had some sort of orange martini which was too sweet and syrupy.
We tried The Federal prior to a concert at the Mass Mutual center, which is less than 10 minutes' away. We enjoyed an absolutely stellar meal and superlative service from our waiter Alex. From the time we checked in with the hostess to cocktails at the bar, then apps, entrees and desserts we thoroughly enjoyed the time spent. I couldn't begin to suggest dining options because we all ordered a number of dishes and one was better than the next! Suffice to say feel free to order whatever suits you and it will be just grand!!
Everything I've had here is delicious. The fancy thin crust pizza is amazing and the truffle macaroni and cheese is to die for. These are not foods I would associate with an upscale restaurant, but The Federal made me change my mind. I've also tried some of the more elegant specialty entrées and they were all amazing.
The Federal never disappoints as a destination for a special night out. The food remains excellent, fresh, with creative preparations. But the restaurant really shines from the glow of their staff, who are to a person gracious and knowledgeable to no end. I have been many times over many years, and they remain at the top of their game. Highly recommended!
I loved the clean and bright feel of the room with a nice table for two. Glad I took the server's recommendation on the halibut special as it was spectacular. Thoroughly enjoyed the fried oysters and heirloom tomato appetizers. The pear martinis were excellent and dessert of strawberry rhubarb creme brulee was a perfect finish to the meal. The complimentary pita with olive tapanade and hummus was a nice touch, along with the fresh bread.
Overall it was a lovely dinner although the space can lend itself to being a bit loud if patrons are not considerate of others. I thought the pace of the service was very good and attentive. It is a nice special occasion location but may be considered on the pricey side for weekend outings.
First visit to this well-regarded fixture. Valet parking is a nice touch at the start. We were seated right away even though we were a little early. Our server was knowledgeable, attentive and warm (Lilly). The Federal has a great bar. Cocktails were delicious. The menu is cleverly arranged by type of food then subdivided by course. The chefs specials sounded so good we abandoned.most of our menu choices in their favor. If you eat meat, and it is available, GET the Elephant's Ear pork chop. You will thank me. My wife had the tuna steak. I sampled a taste and it was cooked perfectly. That's not hyperbole. It was exactly right. Sauces and sides complemented without overwhelming. (I'm talking to you olive ragout on the pork chop.)
Lovely desserts. Although the dinner portions were so generous we split a single bacon lovers. Which was rich and wonderful.
Admittedly a "fan favorite" of our family for special occasions. Never disappoints with the quality and creativeness of the dishes and products. We also use The Federal for business dinners ranging from small parties (e.g., 4-8) or for larger including our Board meeting dinners (25-30). Never disappoints!
We had the perfect college reunion gathering at The Federal and were treated like royalty. The round table was great for conversation. The food was fun, delicious, original, beautifully presented and accommodated all of our dietary constraints. We so much appreciate having The Federal as our goto for all special occasions. Sincerely,
Business dinner ... my clients (5 total) have been dining at the Federal for 10+ years, my first time, service was not good at all, restaurant maybe at 30% capacity. Drinks took forever, appetizers, salads, dinner, desert. timing between each course erratic. My clients suggest worst experience they have had at the Federal. I will be going somewhere else next time in town. Spent over $500.00.
My husband and I have been going to this restaurant since it opened and have always enjoyed our times there; however, we found this visit very disappointing. Seems like they have managed to keep the prices on the high side while cutting corners on the quality. I never mind paying more for a great meal, but there are other options out there and I don't see myself returning any time soon.
