Everything about the English Inn exceeded my expectations! The atmosphere was awesome, dinner was amazing and every staff member made us feel like the most important people in the world. We will be returning customers for a very long time!
Was a nice experience. Expensive for what you get but wife said it was the best steak she has had. I thought it was overpriced. Great place for special occasions but not frequent dining. Was very nice atmosphere with fireplace and pianist. Pub in cellar was also nice. Good service and not noisy where you have to shout to talk. I will go back maybe yearly.
Great ambience. Interesting food selections. Very well prepared. Wait staff was friendly and welcoming.
As always, we loved our experience at The English Inn. Dining at 2:00 on a Sunday, the rare cuts of Prime Rib were gone. In this restaurant, medium rare is closer to medium. Medium was cooked beyond my preference. Every chef/kitchen is different.
We always receive great service here. The food is always tasty and value for the money.
Outstanding filet. Had a two hour meal that was such a special experience.
I highly recommend visiting the Inn, we will be back again!
A bit pricey but very elegant at the same time very comfortable, not pretentious at all. Recommended for special occasions. My wife and I have dined there several times and have always had a wonderful meal.
The English Inn never disappoints. Quiet elegance with exceptionally prepared menu items leave one wondering where the time went. Each dish is prepared with evident attention to detail and delivered to your table with style and elegance. A dining experience as opposed just a meal. We highly recommend the English Inn.
This place is great, its classy, the patrons also were classy, and the price is fair for the level of service they provide. 10/10 would go back again. Wear some nice duds, I was the most underdressed one there in a sport coat and slacks.
Outstanding service, delightful pianist and artfully prepared delicious food - it really doesn’t get any better than this.
We have been coming to the English Inn for nearly 20 years. It is absolutely our favorite restaurant across the country. The English Inn's ambiance, service, and menu is far superior to most restaurants and is worth a two day trip to celebrate special occasions. Looking forward to our next visit to the English Inn ...
I took my wife to the English Inn for Valentine’s Day. It was our first visit, but it certainly will not be our last. The food was amazing, the service was second to none, it was wonderful experience to be able to have dinner with her someplace and not have to fight noise and be distracted by TVs on the wall. My only regret is that we hadn’t visited sooner.
Wonderful food, impeccable service in a very unique grand setting. Be sure to have a drink in the basement pub!
The menu is very limited. There is no chicken on the menu at all. So if you’re not a meat or seafood eater this is not the place for you. Food was wonderful and so was the service.
Four of us went to The English Inn for dinner to celebrate my birthday. Overall, I love this place, but I'd say this was not our best visit. This mansion has old world charm. It's very romantic in a classic way. Lots of wood, rich colors, something that reminds one of Europe. We were greeted upon entry. They took our coats and were promptly seated. Server was very polite, nice, but maybe a bit too formal for me. Otherwise, she was very attentive and knowledgeable. Wine, beer, and cocktail list is robust. Would have been nice to have menus prior to ordering our first round so we could see the craft cocktails and other options available besides wine by the glass and beer. Food here tends to offer many of the classics. The menu has always been consistently good with a nice mix of steaks, fish, poultry, lamb and fowl. My wife ordered the lobster stuffed walleye with lemon risotto, house salad and lobster bisque. Her meal was very good. I tried the French onion soup and would say that it was just OK, not worth the $7 I paid for it. Broth wasn't as rich as it should be. House salads were fresh and tasty. The dressing is very light so you may want to ask for extra if you're into that, but most of us liked it as is. The rest of us ordered filet mignon in varying preparations which were all cooked properly. Good quality cuts, tender and delicious. Presentation was nicely done all the way around. Food came out hot. Was paced nicely. We never felt rushed.
My only real drawbacks to the night were the portion sizes being a bit small for the price. The filet Oscar didn't exactly have a lot of crab and could have had more sauce. My friend ordered a Tito's and soda and it came out with tonic on two separate occasions. I noted that it was my birthday on the Open Table reservation but it was never recognized. I ordered crème brulee and I'd say I've had much better.
We had a nice time and good meal. Worth the trip, especially in the spring.
Had a wonderful experience. Can't wait to go back again.
We stayed at the English Inn for our 30th anniversary and dined there as well. It was a leisurely meal that lasted 2 hours but that was fine for our needs. I especially appreciated that they had several gluten free dessert options since I'm intolerant. I did feel a bit pinched for gf meal options only because of what I was in the mood for, but there were ample gf meal options available. Overall a very lovely evening....good food and beautiful surroundings with rich wood paneling and decorative ceiling. Wish we had gotten there a few minutes earlier so we could have sat close to the wood burning fireplace but we had a cozy corner table for two that was also very nice.
I miss the gardens. View of the banquet hall did nothing for the ambience
Our party of four was seated near the fireplace in the dining room closest to the entrance. Elegantly decorated, peaceful and quite, which is such a rate treat to find in resturants today.
The pacing of the courses was perfect, the service was quite good - non intrusive.
Food: The prime rib was generously sized and flavorful, the roast duck was dry and crunchy- way overcooked. The beautiful shrimp cocktail appetizer had large shrimp and a very distinct, spicy hot sauce. The other food items were fairly good and served warm.
Great service and meal was excellent! The menu offered many choices . Our reservations were early but it does get busy during prime mealtime?
Celebrating an anniversary. I requested seating in the main dining room but it was not honored until i insisted on it. My meat was ordered medium-well and it was medium. Otherwise, our evening was lovely.
We found out about the live pianist they hire for the Fridays and Saturdays leading up to Christmas in December and have now made this an annual tradition. The value is fantastic, service and atmosphere are exquisite. We split an appetizer, both ordered entrees and separate desserts and it was all wonderful. The pianist, decorations and fire in the fireplace make this such a romantic location for the holidays. For a night cap, the pub downstairs is open until 10 p.m.
We met friends here for lunch and probably overstayed our visit but no one tried to hurry us. The food and the service was great. The Very tasteful Christmas decorations made it a very festive experience. Would definitely recommend to my friends.
It was a great anniversary experience
the service and food were exceptional. 5 star for sure
Went to the English Inn for my son's college graduation and father's 92nd Birthday. One member of our party had never been there before, we raved about the French onion soup. Unfortunately and honestly very lacking, have made much better myself.
One lamb chop entree was served very rare and bloody had to send it back, but was fine after some additional cooking.
Lobster tail was just above room temperature had been sitting sometime before serving.
The potato side was dry and tasteless might as well not served it.
Server was outstanding and the tip reflected no reduction for the other shortfalls.
Hard to complain when your on these special occasions, special location and pricy location. Really wanted to, but just didn't want to stand out on this special with complaints.
Taking this under consideration for our next visit, want to keep The English Inn as a special go to place, but will be more free next time to get what we deserve for the price point......
We dined here for our Anniversary and were very impressed. Atmosphere was very nice and service was tremendous. We will definitely go again.
Celebrated our first year anniversary and it was spectacular. We want to come back next year!
Always been a first rate gem a little out of the way, but worth the drive.
Went for Thanksgiving. Had been on several other occasions and it was always good. This time, not so much. Food was subpar and rather disappointing. Husband got Turkey dinner and I got the lobster stuffed walleye. Walleye was very bland and the lemon risotto just doesn’t pair well. Turkey was a loaf, not carved and the sides were ok. Will eventually go back and try again but not for Thanksgiving. Just didn’t feel it was worth the price.
We were there for Thanksgiving. The only reason I didn't give the food a five was because of the salads we had. Every one of us thought the salads were poor and no one finished his/hers. The appetizers, rolls, entrees were excellent. We were seated on time, had good service and it is a lovely facility.
We have celebrated numerous times at the English Inn. It’s a special place.
Dinner with relatives. The entire evening was special.
We have enjoyed coming here for several years for special occasions. This was an anniversary this time and once again a very special event for us.
We were celebrating my wife's 50th birthday and we really had a nice time. The decor and atmosphere are very romantic (it is an old mansion after all) and we really liked the food. The menu is mostly traditional, but we liked that. Some places try too hard to be "creative" with their food choices, but the selection here is creative and tasty without being boring. The prices are only slightly expensive, but for once it is totally worth it. We'll be back for other special occasions in the future. Definilty worth the drive and worth your time to try it.
another excellent evening. Great food, great service. Both my wife's rack of lamb and my beef Wellington were cooked to perfection.
The best restaurant in the Lansing area.
The lobster bisque was too salty. The prime rib was over done. The salads were good and so was the rack of lamb.
We had not been to the English Inn for quite a few years. The food and service were excellent. It was nice to eat in a place where you could hear one another talk. Not everyone likes to dine in a noisy place. The English Inn is also a bed and breakfast. We have stayed there in the past on two separate occasions celebrating a wedding anniversary. Very beautiful gardens all around. The Grand River runs behind the inn. Very picturesque for weddings, etc. We plan to frequent the inn more often! It is a very special place. Also, the English Inn is not too far from Lansing and Jackson.
Beautiful interior. Onion soup broth was great, although size was on the small side. House salad and dressing was fabulous. Beef Wellington was a bit tought and the dough was thin. Mashed potatoes were excellent. Desert was the highlight; really really good.
